It took me 6 months to remotely know how to start my light novel (with art between pages) and I stress "remotely" Don't worry about it, just try and do something, I started it as a comic, then as a single page panel style comic, then a light novel... What I'm saying is, *JUST DO IT* even if the initial SUCKED, that's what the first attempt is there for.

Depends on your work, and where you post it, a better explanation may come from an artist on RU-vid called Lavender Towne

Ye thats pretty much it just confidence. Even if your art is bad if you have a great story then you might make a good comic or manga. Look at ONE the maker of opm and mob psycho. He might not have the best art but he has a great story with characters you care bout. Be confident in making comics.

I know so many massive comics that started when the author's skill was beyond trash tier. Some stayed at trash tier and still to this day make that artist enough to live handsomely off. When you can start, is when you have the will to achieve and stick through it. If you're asking when should I start, what you're really asking is please give me an excuse not to start.

If you think that your not good enough to draw or start a manga, just remember it’s not always about the art. If anything it’s more the story than the actual art. For example, the creator of “One Punch Man” or “Mob Psycho 100” who goes by the name of One, his art was not even that great and still created some of the best manga out there Also, aye, thanks for the likes, means a lot my fam.

@@joey.h14 try making them both step by step, like draw one line on the right eye then on the left and so on. that way you're eye drawing skills will improve a lot faster (if you haven't tried already) it worked for me, at least! (took a few months to get it right every time tho)

I agree that it's not all about the drawing skill. Though to be fair, One is the exception to the rule. He's genre savvy like no one else, has a knack for world-building and writing parodies of the medium that meet the zeitgeist, giving him 11/10 writing skills to make up for his amateurish level of drawing.

Then do ch 200-something. Admittedly I haven't attempted a comic yet, but whenever I'm writing and I have an idea for ch 10, I do it. I get it out on paper exactly how I have it in my head and put it in a separate document. Then I go back to ch whatever I'm supposed to be on and work my way to ch 10. If it so happens that I have to edit ch 10 once I reach it, then I edit. But imo it's much better to get it all out. Especially if the prospect of doing ch 200-something excites you.

Questions: what is your comic about? What stuff is primarily in them and happens in them? Practice that stuff. Set small, acheivable, MEASURABLE, goals for each one. Once you accomplish your practice, try out a test comic. One that you could finish in 2-3 months, if your goal is long form story telling. Things to focus on if you wanna be a shonen manga artist: Drawing people, poses, anatomy, and facial expressions. Perspective drawing, rotating objects in 3D, maintaining proportions while rotating, even with backgrounds! Backgrounds, landscapes, buildings,vehicles, plants, maybe some animals. Props and materials, clothing, armour. Lineart. Shading/rendering, color (if that's a part of your comic). Spend at least a week focusing on each goal.

One's art has better composition and flow than Murata's. Most famous example is that green haired girl getting hit with large rocks and shrugging them off. One's panel clearly shows her getting slammed with some real giant boulders with some REAL GOOD kinetic energy that One can portray flawlessly and her deadpan expression as she leisurely and literally shrugs them off. The composition is wide panel of the girl standing in relaxed but grounded pose on the ground as heavy boulders strike her with intimidating force and speed. Murata: lovingly detailed boobs and crotch of the chick as some pebbles float around. You can barely tell how big the stones are and what is even happening. Is she floating them with her powers as she strikes that sexy pose? The entire composition is this pin up chick being a masturbatory fantasy instead of an action drawing filled with pure kinetic energy.

I really love how all your tips are down-to-earth and with real actions to take, instead of just "believe in yourself". Confidence doesn't grow in trees neither just pop by sheer "willpower" as some people like to think. Confidence is something that has to be BUILT through real actions, practice, feedback and healthy comparison just as you showed in this video. I've had a comic idea that i've been working on for like 18 years. I made real progress a year and a half ago when I finally decided that I need to stop worrying if I was good enough. I had to lower my expectation of myself and stop thinking i wanted it to be perfect. I told myself I wasn't ready for years and years. Now, probably still not, but fuck it, we'll do it live! Lol. Thing is... One MUST decide that being ready or not is irrelevant. Like you said, just start. Once you do, decide that you're in it, you're doing it. And once you adopt the identity of someone who's DOING the thing, then you're no longer someone who WANTS to do it. That's the hardest step and the one that will hold you back the most. 18 years... Fyi, I love my story and art but it isn't where I want to be. I still (insert many things) but I get constant praise, I AM talented and the feeling of thinking I COULD succeed if I somehow was good enough is a trap. You will succeed if you start and stick with it. The hardest part of it is not stopping and not letting your current struggles discourage you. The quality is a bi- product of the time and hard work you put in. If I keep writing I'll end up saying everything that was said in the video. So yeah, 100% can confirm. Just start and keep at it. I can't tell you how many times I took year long or longer breaks because it wasn't pressing enough to push myself past my own doubts. Just know that you can. You may not be at your desired skill level but you must know that any skill level is POSSIBLE with enough time and work. Also, know that you can't be good at something until you've done it. No manga artist was good at making manga until they actually made one. They had to discover and learn all the challenges as they were doing it. So in that essence, you'll never be ready, and know what all to do in making a manga and know what that's like for yourself until you yourself cross that road. Your adventure will be your own. So Start.

@@javencummins1426 oh my GAh- Ok, I definitely forgot I posted a comment under this video lol. And I even less expected a response after all this time. So as of now ... not much changed, really. 2 years after my 1st reply here, my manga has officially been put on hiatus, and I moved on some smaller projects. I'm kind of upset by this turn of events, but I suppose it's better to put some projects aside and come back to them later. Though, fun fact, meanwhile I just got more nonchalant with social media. Too much pressure by the numbers and the algorithm, too much frustration with the lack of interaction. I concluded i'm 100% uninterested in having my stress to keep escalating like so. So there! I agree! Criticism is your best friend. Generally You can tell what comments are just haters as apposed to people who are actually giving you feedback. These are good tips, especially about developing your concept. Here's my advice from someone who is about to self-publish her own comic: I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am today if I hadn't started drawing and uploading comics online! My art style was sort of there, but I couldn't draw consistently. My backgrounds were sloppy. The colors were inconsistent. I drew slowly and updated sporadically. But I kept going. When drawing my comic stressed me out, I would take a break (animate, illustrate, make music) then come back to it. After a while, I figured out a better process. My art, colors, and flow improved immensely. It just took time. I started drawing comics in Fall 2018. In just two years, my art, workflow, and confidence improved so much that I took on a Webtoon challenge - I drew nearly 100 pages in two months. That's crazy! Now, is my art perfect? Far from it. I still have a lot of learning to do, but it's incredible how much progress you can make when you stick with it. My advice? Start soon, and keep your stories short at first (like 6-8 pages, maybe 20 pages for one story). Draw full comic pages. Check out how professional comic pages are laid out. You've got this, but your comic won't get made unless you make it!! Best of luck everyone!!

Im working on my five part comic story sinilar to jojo. Im a weirdo. Im making part 3 first. Running on a dream. A story about 2 young men who travel across united states. I was influenced by steel ball run for part 3. Part 4 is the first story I came up with. Then I came up with part 1 and then part 5 and finally part 2.

When i first enroll in Manga college in japan (year 1) , I started drawing Manga with zero exprience and bad drawing. But i never give up and keep improving my drawing and Manga knowledge. Now that i`m in second year and i feel the change and improving so much that my japanese friend said to me "Your drawing is improving and its very good " . Hope i can be a Mangaka in Japan hehe ~

I've had two stories I want to turn into comics, to actually publish. I'm primarily a writer, and have had the stories down for a long time with over a year and a half on the narratives, and I am confident in my skills as a storyteller. But telling it as a comic, I know where my art needs significant improving before I feel comfortable starting on my real projects, so what I've done is start a different project entirely. A comic solely to use to practice and develop my style. Well thats not entirely true, I've become very attached to the story itself, and it's basically become a giant blob of me exploring new ideas not just with my art, but also with how I tell stories and think about all kinds of real world ideas. If your gut tells you you aren't ready yet to do the artwork for a particular project, don't not do anything. Find something else, anything else to do that will get you to that point. You'll surprise yourself by what you create along the way.

I'm personally a better visual artist than I am a writer, which is why I thought the best way to tell my stories would be through comics. However I found myself doubting I'd reach an audience that way. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression very few people read comics. I was toying with the idea of sharpening my writing skills instead and telling the stories that way. I'm just curious, being primarily a writer, how come you've chosen comics as your medium?

Ms Teddy if you want try to simplify your worlds rule/law like what kind of power would it have how would that power work, etc. so like Ki is just energy from our body and can be strengthen a lot, you can compress it you can control it, you can change its form etc. or would it be items like gloves etc. from ancient time etc. so prob study about mythology and learn abt the different creatures etc. it takes a lot of time but yeah. A simple idea isn’t in like super detailed but it’s pretty easy to understand.

Great video. Weather you’re writing a book or screenplay or comic, the best thing to do in my opinion is: Finish your project! It does not have to be perfect, but you must finish it. You learn so much about story and character arc when you finish projects, even if they are downright awful. It’s a storytelling muscle that only gets worked when you finish something, not when you’re going back and fussing over every page and word to make it “perfect” The best writing advice I ever got was “Finish your CRAPPY book first” if you know what I mean . I think that philosophy can apply to the art side in a comic as well. Also, you don’t need anyone’s permission to give you a green light to do a big project. Just do it, and have fun. Set your goals, make plans to achieve them, and FINISH it! Again Great video!👍🏼

Here is the truth. Start right now. It does not matter if you or other people think you are not good enough. Why? Because you get better overtime. So the sooner you do it, the better it is. Look at the manga drawn by the creator of ONE PUNCH MAN. You can always get better at the story if you suck at drawing, so on, and so forth. Eventually you can collaborate with people who can contribute art to the project. You can always go back and "REDO" your art when you learn new skills. Also, you can start by "TRACING" or "ROTOSCOPING" until you get used to drawing things. EX: if you need to draw a city, google "CITY", and trace that outline. overtime you will modify some buildings, add or remove some things. etc. Also, find out how to use GOOGLE STREET VIEW, so that you can view just about any major city in the world from a realistically accurate street angle, if you need to draw locations that are not technologically advanced, just google an amish town or mennonite etc. you can always ask online what popular locations are, and you can often use those as your foundation. if you need to draw animals, just google, horses running, etc. anyway if this helps you, please message me so i can come read the prototype of your manga.

@@dreamalitymangacreator5891 my problem is that since i'm the only one working on my title (comics is really not popular here in the Philippines), each page takes so much time to make that by the time i finish page 10, it looks completely different from how i imagined it at first. Example of my work: www.deviantart.com/verticalskyline/gallery/70060233/jisaten It's about a hikkikomori who's trying to commit suicide and a shinigami waifu who leeps preventing him. Atleast, it's supposed to be... This took about a year to get to 16 pages, and honestly, i dont even know where the story is going anymore. This project is a bust. I can do fine with single pieces, like a painting or a character design. But drawing things over and over again in comics is just insane work. It's literally easier to color one character lineart, than finish six panels in a manga page. And stringing a coherent story together, it's way too much for one person to do alone. Unless it's short comic strips i can do one page at a time, the story is always going to deflate by the time i make reasonable progress.

You just gotta start. The important tip in this (at least I find it important), is being honest with yourself. It is hard to criticize our own works sometimes, because a lot of work goes into it. I started, and was polishing things along the way (art, writing, etc.). The "problem" is, I ended up liking this project a lot. So much so, that I reboot it, because I want it to be better than it ever was from the start.(I'm still working on this thing!) One Shots, art important for sure. I remember Candle Jack lol I found it enjoyable, but compared to your stuff now, Jack doesn't really hold a candle...*shot*

I'm putting in my two cents here. Here's what you need to be a decent Manga or COMIC artist. Go read The Promised Neverland. Once you've read it you'll understand the following. -Having a story. -Having a style. -How to draw people artistically. -How to use colors effectively. Those are the four cardinal signs that you're ready to be an comic artist. If you can draw better than Marvel's D-List, YOU WILL BE FINE.

When are you ready? Make small prototype projects and answer your own question. Also allow your early projects to suck, trying to be a protectionist at the beginning can prevent you from getting basic product done. Completing something, anything, even garbage is an accomplishment, be proud.

I just started a comic on webtoon at the end of February, and somehow I got over 3k subs, and I feel like I got super lucky. I already feel like my art has improved a bit because you have to think of so many different angles and positions to draw in, and it's really challenging me with my skills in both writing stories and drawing. It's a great experience so far, even tho I still have a ways to go :)

Everytime you get discouraged and insecure, remeber one punch man! The original art isn't good, but the storytelling is amazing! Another example is Attack on titan, the art and style on the first couple of volumes isn't really good, but the manga is huge now. You don't need talent to make the things you love, only the motivation to start and courage to do so! Awesome video

I’ve been wanting to start my coming for years, I’m 21 and have been developing this story since I was in third grade. Whats always been holding me back is the confidence to start. tbh you’re never not “good enough” many artists start off very bad with their art but gradually get better & it’s bc they learned along the way bc they stuck through it and got better with practice. You don’t have to start with the skill of an artist that been drawing their whole life. Start because you want to bc it’s your passion, your art shouldn’t be compared to anyone else’s bc it’s *your* art.

Thanks for the tips, man! I think what I'll do is one shots of small stories like how marvel did back in the day with tales of suspense, amazing fantasy, etc. Especially since I'm going the digital route it can get me more used to stuff like drawing backgrounds, characters, etc. It can also give me a chance to go for the whole critique thing you mentioned too
