In this video we're making and comparing three kinds of char rope:
* hand-braided strips of burlap (jute)
* cotton-ish rope (We don't think it's 100% cotton.)
* hand-braided strips of 100% cotton denim (from jeans)
The charing time in the fire was about 8 minutes.
The Results - From Most Successful to Least
(The back of a knife down a ferro rod was used to make the sparks onto the char ropes.)
#1 - The braided, 100% cotton denim char rope takes a spark the easiest. The braiding causes the denim to keep a coal the best when compared to denim char cloth (that isn't braided).
#2 - The braided burlap took a spark easily also. It comes in a very close second to the cotton denim.
#3 - The charing process verifies that the cotton-ish rope, well, it isn't cotton. The white rope charred into a shrunken, crumbly, hard mass. It would not ignite with a spark. There were a few times that a little spark glow would land on the charred material then it would go out in just a couple of seconds.

Nice demonstration. I tell folks when they use jute twine, to make sure it’s 100% natural jute. Sometimes (especially the colored jute) the manufacturers put a non-flammable coating on it. That may be what happened to your cotton-ish rope.

Thank you. I didn't know about the possibility of non-flammable coating. Interesting.

I have found that the absolute best char material for flint and steel is cotton balls! With the loose fibers it catches a spark extremely quickly and it instantly goes deep creating a glowing ember ball. But with a fero rod, any common char material will ignite with a single strike because its sparks burn at more than 3000° whereas flint and steel is at around 800°. If I can make a suggestion, I have over 10 fero rods all of my bags and vehicles and 3 sets of flint and steel in all of my emergency bags, but I have recently been impressed with these little rechargeable electric candle lighters! A single full charged candle lighter can produce a few thousand degree plasma for 120 seconds. It can ignite a char cloth in a tenth of a second, newspaper in a fraction of a second, and cardboard in a second. Given these facts I can light over 300-400 fires with a single charged lighter, which only takes an hour and a half to charge from a medium speed charger. If you have a cheap solar powerbank you can have fires for a lifetime. These lighters are very cheap, right now, I picked up 8 of them for $4 each. I also keep these in all of my vehicles and backpacks.

Thank you so much for all of this. Such wonderful information. We too like the longevity and ease of use of the electric arc lighters. They are awesome.

Is that a Mora Garberg you're using to strike the ferrorod? I am a big fan of the mora knives, and the garberg is fantastic. I love the style of your video. Very calm and soothing.

Yes, it is a Morakniv Garberg. And I agree, it is such a pleasant knife to use. Thank you so much for the kind words about the video style. That's awesome and means a lot to us.

I use oil lamp wick...it is charred at the end rather than the whole thing at once but you don't need a lot..

Hi nn and thank you. We purchased the tins from Amazon. A link to a variety of tins is in the video description. We cut the small hole in the top of each tin with the tip of a knife blade. That, and lots more information about making char cloth, is in another of our videos at this link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NCj35hZdkbc.html I hope this answers your question. Please let us know if we missed the mark.
