One strike to get ignition with flint and steel, I'd say it was a testiment to how good that punk charred up, but frankly, I think you're just that good. Big thanks once again for a great video, all the other firetubers i've seen put so much emphasis on close fitting lidded boxes and perfect air seals to make char, you demonstrating it with a can with the lid sawn off with a knife really shows what can be done.
@DavidWestBgood2ppl

Lots of venting allows gases to escape easier producing a cleaner char that is more reactive.

That's fascinating, it's exactly what every other firetuber i've seen do a char-tin setup has pushed as their ideology. Given your track record, I'm going to trust you 100% on this. (I want to do side by side tests of my own now!)@@DavidWestBgood2ppl

After all the years watching you, I have yet to locate and char punk wood! That’s gonna change before the snow falls! Done most all that you’ve taught….but that one…. P.S. I cringe when I see a knife blade cutting tin😖…even a Stanley!

I worked cranberry harvest here in Wisconsin for 13 years. As a kid, I liked the jellied cranberry, but now I make my own sauce. I do like it better. Anyway, that was a very interesting process. You make it look so easy. Now I need to go make a fire in my woodstove. It is getting chilly on this Fall evening in the north woods.

I make my homage with cranberry juice coctail instead of water and it makes a big difference. And BTW, years ago the NRA used to publish a list of corporations which donated to take away our Second Amendment rights. Ocean Spray was among the leaders, so I never buy their products. My local grocery chain sells jellied their house brand sauce equal to Ocean Spray and their own brand of fresh cranberries too to make my own sauce with.

I've charred punk wood several times. It doesn't take a ember easily. It takes many repeated strikes landing on it to finally catch an ember and then it tends to be on only the very small light pieces of punk wood. Many times it catches a small ember ( flint and steel but goes right out within a second or two. It's a bit puzzling. Maybe I needed to cook it longer.

Charcoal acts like what you're describing. You have to start with punkwood that is spongy like in the video. See my char playlist.

Always wondered why ocean spray cran sauce labels are always upside down, even here in Canada.
@onesky8647

Maybe it would help if you didn’t cut the lid completely off the can so you could bend it back inside afterwards and keep it from tilting inside during the charring process.
@DavidWestBgood2ppl
@DavidWestBgood2ppl 10 месяцев назад
I've tried it. An attached lid can gap just as much. As the can expands and contorts in the heat it will make a gap.

Question Dave! And you've probably already addressed this somewhere but, would it be worth-while, dropping one of those tiny "silica cel or gel" moisture absorber packs; like what comes in most everything nowadays, down in the "char jar"? i.e. with new shoes etc.

@@DavidWestBgood2ppl Neither am I. It actually reminds me of one of my late father’s little jokes he trotted out every time he bought out his pen knife to cut some fruit or food wrapping open when we were kids. “It’s alright, I licked it clean last time I used it”!😂
