So it turns out getting some silicone and resin to make your own Game Boy buttons isn't actually all that difficult. I definitely learned a lot about casting and have plans to try making more molds in the very near future. If you're looking for an actual tutorial from people who know what they're doing check out these videos:
RockerGaming: • Casting Custom Video G...
Roarke Murdock: • Hand cast Gameboy and ...
Scruffy Lookin RGB (easier method): • Cast game controller b...
The Crafsman: • Mold Making And Resin ...
Making these videos is expensive and time-consuming, even $1 donation on Patreon helps me quite a bit: / esotericsean

Thanks for watching and subscribing, everyone! This was one of my longer videos. I still edit them down a lot, but do you prefer long content like this? Or would you prefer I condense the content even more?

I think longer is great for tutorials. I also was curious about what length of video is best.

A couple things worth exploring: You're gonna want a pressure pot if you keep casting things like this as air suspended in the resin can cause some pretty severe issues. If you start working with clear resins, I suggest starting with Castin' Craft clear. It'll be a slow cure but it's legitimitaly crystal clear. For dyes, PearlEx is the most accessible high quality pigment powder I've found. Amazon is a great place to buy it. Amazon ALSO has a very wide assortment of glow in the dark pigment powder. Something that might be cool for this is thermochromic powder that changes color as it gets warm. Very cool to be making your own replacement parts, I hope this leads you into some VERY nice custom buttons.

Curiosity Forge Thanks for the suggestions! Definitely have been thinking about making or buying a pressure pot and vacuum chamber. Will be looking more into them as well as dyes soon. :)
@drstrangefart
@drstrangefart 4 года назад
DON'T use a vacuum chamber for resin casting. Look up Shop Time and watch Peter's video on using a vacuum to pull air out of resin. It's really bad. I was gonna get a vacuum chamber myself until I saw what happens. Massive foamy mess.
@esotericsean
@esotericsean 4 года назад
Curiosity Forge Ah thanks, definitely will be doing more research about that soon. I guess the vacuum chamber would be to get the air out of the silicone before making the mold then.
@drstrangefart

I'm not 100% on this part but I THINK pressure pots work for bubble-free molds too. I vaguely remember seeing a video on the subject but it was quite a while ago. The King of Random shared some information on it at one point not too long ago if memory serves me.
@roarkemurdock3027

@@drstrangefart you use a vacuum chamber on any liquid that has a long enough pot life to mix, vacuum, inject into the mold and then get it in the pressure pot with enough time to pressurize before it catalyzes, basically you need at least a 20 minute pot life or more, otherwise you skip the vacuum chamber and only use a pressure pot

I just wanted to say, your video here was my first exposure to silicone molding and resins. I first found your video about a year ago. What started out as a curiosity to make cool gameboy buttons has now taken me down a deep rabbit hole of learning more about 3D resin molding, polyethylene injection molds, and learning about the other ways people print or cast things using plastics and silicone. Just wanted to say thanks. Your video sparked a great new hobby that has been keeping me very preoccupied. I'm just about to take the dive into making my own fun things. :) Hope you keep making awesome content, and thanks!

The reason people talk about not using certain clays is because some clays will inhibit the cure of some silicones, particularly platinum silicones. Really the first time you use a particular type of silicone you want to read the data sheet and then do a small test with all of the materials you plan to use, to make sure the silicone's cure is not inhibited. Clay that has sulfur is particularly troublesome with platinum silicones

Great video!!!👍 I actually used that Smooth-Cast 300 Liquid a few months ago to cast some Eyes for a Puppet I made! It was tricky learning how to use the liquid bevause it hardens really fast and it took me 3 tries but the Eyes turned out great and they are perfectly round and have no bumps or rough spots!

Polymer clay (like sculpey, fimo, cernit, etc...) can melt plastic if it isn't baked. I actually melted one Lego a long time ago, when i didn't knew about this. So please be careful when using it (it won't melt it in 2 hours nor in a few days. But it will be enough to damage it on surface.)
@esotericsean
@esotericsean 4 года назад
maxou You know, that’s good to know. I actually remember as a kid I had a lot of sculpey clay in a plastic container and it made some small holes in the bottom. It had been in there for years, so I’m not sure exactly how long it took, but important to remember!

Aaron Trupiano Roarke’s Retro Corner has successfully cast an entire NES controller as well as those little mini Dreamcast controller things. I’m sure it’s possible but would be a much trickier mold. Maybe I’ll attempt it someday in the future when I’ve got more experience under my belt.

This is awesome! I'm kinda curious, I know someone mentioned (might have been you or KyleAwesome, I honestly don't remember) that a common issue with Chinese reproduction GBC Dpads was that the little nub at the back of the dpad was shallower in the reproductions than in the original. Is this casting OK enough, or does your casting have the same problem as the reproduction Dpads?
@esotericsean
@esotericsean 4 года назад
Yep! My mold is based on an original Dpad, so it’s the full size nub that doesn’t have that issue. I actually have a solution for the problem with the Chineses reproduction Dpads though, with a small 3D printed circle you can glue in place. I’ll make a quick video about that soon. :)
