Waiting for a chemical to arrive to continue the main project line, so some simpler videos in the meantime. Next i will be making 1,4-dioxane and sodium using NurdRage's methods. Also 'vanillin from wood (lignin)' video is in the making but not sure when it will be finished.
For this video, i used NileRed's method ( • Making Diethyl Ether ) and see how it went.

what i always do for bigger synthethis of ether is just place a small reflux condensor on top and hook it up to a PID loop to drop back everything until the vapor coming out of the top of the condensor is 36-40°C

To increase the efficiency of the reaction, it is necessary to shift the equilibrium, and this can be done by removing water, and for this you need to put a glass trap with the ability to drain the desired layer. When you use a dephlegmator - you don't need to wet it, just blow it with air from the outside - put a fan.

Thank you! I saw at least one video (either from "nile red", or "chemplayer" or "dougs lab"), where the synthesis of diethyl ether took place in the presence of sand (in the 3-necked flask). I can't remember right now, what the purpose of the sand was, but maybe it is useful to improve your yield of the final product. But the starting materials are quite cheap, so don't mind too much.

I’m pretty sure the reaction to form diethyl ether from ethanol is an equilibrium reaction, so a Dean Stark trap may be useful

a taller column would also help if you happened to have one. the 2-4 ft columns are often wildly unnecessary for a lot of distillation/extraction, but certain fractions it is vital.

The column doesn't work in this synthesis. The point of heating to 140°C is that you distill off both water and ether. If the water remains, the reaction stops. In the industrial production the distillate is distilled again in spite of side products. Ethanol returns, and the crude ether is directed to next purification steps.
@sslivkov
@sslivkov 2 года назад
Maybe another explanation for the low yield, at 4:12 you leave ~200 ml and come back to a lot less the next morning, probably some ether evaporated overnight.
@y33t23

If your reaction temperature was too high, most of the loss was probably in the dehydration of ethanol, making a bunch of ethylene gas.

Difficulties I have had in this reaction is the formation of both ethyl sulfate and acetaldehyde.
@christopherleubner6633
@christopherleubner6633 Год назад
React with lower temperatures first, then gently distill it. Ethyl sulfate will come over at a higher temperature as seen here, generally it will be EtHSO4 rather than the full ester. Adding a bit of anhydrous ethanol and magnesium sulfate will convert it to ether.
@ivant5054
@ivant5054 2 года назад
can dilute sulfuric be used instead of concentrated? let's say 70% sulfuric as far as I understand, the important step is the reaction temperature which should not exceed 140°C, wich is the boiling point of 60% sulfuric acid, so 70% should be fine, right?

So just use any acid that has a conjugate base that is non-nucleophilic, right? So HCl here would not be a good choice, but maybe nitric acid could work?
@manpreet9766

I guess hcl won’t do. Sulphuric acid has another role here of shifting the equilibrium by absorbing the water. With hcl the yield would be very low.

When the temperature is way to high for this reaction, Ethene Gas (CH2=CH2) is formed, this could help to account for the small yield...
@Chemiolis

I had a thermometer in the flask and it never went over 145 C so i don't think ethene formation was too significant. The vigreux was just too hot and ethanol came over before it reacted.

Distilling ethers... bold! ;) Okay-ish in this case when the ether was freshly made. But generally questionable. It is one if the reasons for the myth chemistry were constantly exploding. Well... they do, if you distill old ethers. ;)

It's called 'drysyn' and they are not really old as far as i know, they are a good replacement for oil baths and heating mantles. It's basically a heating plate to round bottom flask adapter. Good temperature control, no shorting when leaking liquid, not dirty and low temperature capped like oil baths.

I'm interested to see if your diethyl ether will support a Grignard reaction. Diethyl ether can be hard to clean.up. If it doesn't work try distilling it over sodium. You might want to test it on a small scale first. Years ago diethyl ether was used for a general anesthetic. A person who had been put to sleep this way smelled of diethyl ether for days. In the days of my childhood there was an old wives tale circulated by doctors that ALL children had to have their tonsils removed and in 1973 I saw whole family of children taken into the local hospital and all their tonsils were removed in one day. I was receiving from a broken.ankle myself. Most insurance policies do not cover tonsil removal.
@Chemiolis

Yes i will do some tests first, also will dry the ether more. I have some commercial anhydrous diethyl ether to use if it doesn’t work out.
@karlbergen6826
@karlbergen6826 2 года назад
@@Chemiolis Another method is to make a small amount of methyl Grignard fresh and put that into your flask to kick things off. You will need a little methyl Iodide. Remember methyl iodide is a methylatiing agent and should be quite a biohazard.. Also remember that once the Grignard reaction gets going it's quite exothermic.
