Another great video, love the vibe and banter in the team! I always learn something when I watch your videos. Appreciate your generous sharing. Keep up the great work Peter & Bec. I learn more from watching you pose models even when thats NOT what your teaching than tutorials specifically ABOUT posing. Although you’re actively posing them, you’re not in their face. Rather you’re gently “moving” them, with very little wasted time, into the perfect shot. As if you’ve given a floating row boat a push, waiting till it drifts to where you want it, then capture the image. Great job, thanks for sharing. Now if the virus lockdown ever lifts I can get actual humans to model again...

It is admirable the recognition that you have of the Light in its color, intensity and direction, the great development that you have of the intuition that has been the product of your observation. The poses of your models are very natural, it is worth your previous talk with the models are excellent actresses nothing is overacted. As well as the simplicity and naturalness of his videos and the fabulous assistant he has and now also his model. I think you can create new things, to avoid the routine of your videos. @PeterCoulsonPhotographer 3 года назад
You can get a medium format sort of feel out of a DSLR with a Zeiss Otus lens (but they come with a big price tag) but to get a large format feel out of a DSLR, I don't know how you would do that sorry
@henryrogers5500
@henryrogers5500 2 года назад
Why not just shoot with film instead? I do! 🙂 I love my Nikon F! That said, I also adapt my vintage 50 year old Canon FD and Minolta lenses to my Sony a6100 mirrorless just for fun and some great results! Good points on digital portraits being overly too “clinically” sharp. Adapting vintage lenses to mirrorless modern DSLMs remedies this and warms up and softens the photo with a more pleasing look. Sometimes, the camera system can make a difference. On the other hand, my Olympus OM-D Em-10 Mark II gives me excellent results for portraits! Excellent skin tones, sharp with detail but without that “clinical” sharpness that I get with my Sony using modern Sony lenses.

I'm confused - genuine amateur question here - why couldn't you push the backdrop back 12 feet to get it out of focus? It looked like you have room (not jealous of all that space, oh no), but maybe there's some other reason and I'm keen to learn.
@PeterCoulsonPhotographer
@PeterCoulsonPhotographer 4 года назад
No worries, I couldn't just move the wall because that's not how shallow depth of field on medium and large format works, I was trying to get the style of fall off in her face and body and then to the background, if you look at the end of the video we move the wall away and we had the background that was 10 meters behind her but the detail difference is no different to what the wall was at 2 meteres behind her. If you would like to try it put a lens on at f2.8 have a model 1 meter away from you and a wall 1m behind her, then change up to f5 and the model 1 meter in front but the wall 5m behind her and you will see :) hope that helps

I once had a friend that used to wear a boob Dress . It's design was a bit different. But it got amazing looks. So where does one buy a boob shirt/ top? I have always wondered about what was the best boobs to photograph was . On a model?

I can't remember where we got the top from, it's very old and the tags have come off sorry

Why don't you just push the background further to increase the distance between the subject and the background to blur it? That would have been enough and from what I see on the video your background has wheels and your studio has the space needed.

Tech question for you Peter......you were talking about numbers on your "channels" in relationship to your real/perceived exposure (something about numbers on your channel and therefore the image wasn't blown out, or whatever). Can you take a minute to eplain that?

255 means pure white and i have warnings that go off at 245, and im comfortable if i can keep areas i need in detail under 245, its very hard to explain in a short text, I'm planning on doing an indepth exposure tutorial soon.

LOL, your comment about the unnecessary sharpness of the modern cameras and lenses, confirmed my own view that most of the time, the huge mega pixel count of these devices is just not desirable nor wanted. In fact I believe they are detrimental to meaningful photography. I remembered watching this chap ( one of the usual Fuji sponsored advertisers masquerading as photographer ) using the latest 100 MP offering from that company. He was photographing a most attractive model . At the end I thought the results were absolutely horrid and unflattering. He then added, that he had to a hire a very expensive digital retoucher to sort out the ' imperfections ' in her skin and make up. Nuts. Where 24 Mp or even 12 MP would have been more than sufficient, the ' photographer ' used the latest gizmo filled imaging computer and made a mess of the shoot. I think it was Ansel Adams who once commented that " there is nothing worse than a sharp photo of a fuzzy concept ".

“Clinical” sharpness may be useful, however, in some product and landscape photography, depending on what you’re after.
