Excellent video! A word you could try next time. I know its tempting to jump ahead. Even the warm wax will eat your sugar. If you want a more scrub consistency, wait for the temp to be below 80F. And I do 2 parts sugar to liquid ratio, which is what I think you ended up at anyway. Love that color and will have to try that sent! Tea is one of my favorite things!

Kevin, this video like many of your others was absolutely awesome. As I've commented before, what I appreciate most about your presentations is the amount of research based detail you include in order to flesh out the reasoning behind your use of specific ingredients. Again, great job. Keep up the good work because it's much appreciated.

Nice sugar scrub Kevin! Thank you so much for explaining why it's called an emulsified sugar scrub. I kept looking at all these recipes without water and couldn't see why both ewax and preservatives were being used. Excellent presentation!

Wow Kevin this recipe sounds amazing! I think I may give it a try. My scrubs sell decently well. I dont use any silicones I have a lot of picky customers but this just sounds awesome! You dont have any problems with your sugar melting adding it while the oils/butters are so warm? I was thinking about it because you said you needed to add more sugar. I put mine in the freezer until it cools and I whisk it, making it into a pudding like consistency and then I add my sugar last.
@ozymndius
@ozymndius 8 лет назад
+Amy Ellingsworth This turned out the perfect consistency (for me)...it's like very moist sand. If you put it on a slotted spoon it doesn't run through but you could easily push it through the slots...so firm-ish :)

I was just thinking why don't any one use the 'cones in their scrubs, and then their you are using it
@r.thomassen6285
@r.thomassen6285 6 лет назад
You do already have a preservative for the water part (if any water enters the product), and that is the sugar. With so much sugar, which is a preservative itself (if used in high enough amounts) will dissolve in the potential water and preserve the product. Since you use almost two kilos of sugar, it can preserve quite a lot of water. But if you dump lots and lots of water in there, and even some more, well, then the sugar can't preserve it anymore. What I would do instead of using a preservative, is to use a container that water can not enter. Like an airless pump or an upside-down squeeze bottle, for example. I don't know how well it would work for a sugar scrub, but to choose a container that does not let high amounts of water in the product, that will preserve it more than enough. I think it is best to not use a preservative if it can be avoided, since they are not completely harmless. And in this case, which is a water-free self-preserved product in the first place, it can be definately be avoided by changing container. To add preservative to a preserved product is unneccessary. What I find strange, after watching tons of RU-vid videos about making sugar scrubs, is that most choose a preservative because how it is used in the shower. But nobody thinks of changing how it is used in the shower by eliminating dripping wet hands in a jar, the original problem they mention as why they need a preservative. I just wonder, since you use a preservative already, and have emulsifying wax in there, can't you add water to the product to make the consistency more lotion like, or body butter-ish? Would that work? I have not made any sugar scrub yet, that's why I watch all the videos, I would like to do it. But there are too many ways and recipes, so I get almost confused. Your sugar scrub looks really, really nice. I especially like the color :-)
@ozymndius

If you aren't selling products it's probably fine, but if you are I'd recommend a preservative as well as preservative testing.

Hey Kevin! Always love your video's!! One quick question...with the addition of more sugar, shouldn there be an adjustment for more preservative? You already had all your liquids prepared before the addition of the extra sugar, didn't know if the recipe was modified for the addition. Thanks for your help and info...Hugs from Texas!! : )
@ozymndius
@ozymndius 6 лет назад
Good point! I believe the preservative I used has a range so it may have still been fine just at the lower end of the range...I'd have to look at the recipe again. But since I wasn't selling this and only using it for personal use for myself and some friends not a huge deal for me. If you are considering selling something like this lab preservative testing is probably the way to go to ensure your preservative is effective.
@kellyw.1779
@kellyw.1779 6 лет назад
Hey Kevin! Yeah, makes sense... I will check the range of the preservative (percentage wise) based off the recipe just to make sure. Great recipe and beautiful product! Thanks so much...Hugs from Texas!! xx : )

Hi Kevin....how warm do you let the oils get? Doesn't it dissolve some of the sugar? Looks fab as usual :) Thanks for sharing!
@ozymndius

I don't remember the temps when I mixed things, but sugar doesn't dissolve in oil (because oil is non-polar), or dissolves only very minimally depending on the oil.

Yes, it's best to wait until cool before putting on the lid and yes it does thicken some as it cool. The shelf life should be over a year.

Can I use Germall plus or germaben II instead phenonip? I can't find phenonip here :(
@ozymndius
@ozymndius 7 лет назад
I am no expert in preservatives, it is my understanding Germall Plus should not be used in all oil formulations but Germaben II is a good all-around preservative, especially for difficult to preserve formulas (it does contain parabens if that bothers you). I suggest reading Susan Nichols blog 'Point of Interest' she has a wealth of information on preservatives: swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/p/preservatives.html

You can't make an emulsified sugar scrub without an emulsifying agent, but you can make a regular sugar scrub.
