Make an Emulsified Scrub - From Scratch! | Bramble Berry

It's a #tbt video from the archives of SQTV (originally filmed in 2010) and never before publicly released. In this video, learn to make a unique emulsified scrub that is both cleansing and moisturizing. It's a little more complicated to make than a traditional oil and salt (or sugar) scrub. But the benefits make it well worth the effort. This scrub is easier to use, doesn't feel greasy or leave a slippery mess in the shower and it won't leak if you ship it or it falls sideways.

When I'm binge watching soapmaking and bath product videos, I ALWAYS come back to this one! It's one of my all time favorites! I actually just jumped onto the scrubs bandwagon only about a month ago after doing only soaps for so long. I'm addicted and actually just placed another order this morning from Brambleberry for supplies to make more! :)

Thank you so much for watching, and for your orders! It really means a lot to me. This is one of my favorite scrubs. I love the mix of soap, lotion and scrub all in one. =)

I do too! NOT greasy at all, feels so clean and my hands are so soft afterwards! I actually keep my personal jar at the sink and use it whenever my hands are feeling too dry since it's cleansing too. :)

Folks for those that are looking for an alternative/substitute for sterilizing packaging etc with RA ..it has been recommended to me that denatured alcohol can be used as it DOES NOT contain detergents where as RA does which can attract dirt and has a sticky film it tends to leave behind..but as always do your own research and draw your own conclusions!

I've made this product multiple times and have never had a problem with the salt or sugar melting. The product lasts a long time and I used a jar just recently that I made almost a year ago. No melting, the fragrance was still good, and no mold. I wouldn't worry about it.

If I want to add few other oil that rich for skin like jojoba oil, avocado oil, virgin coconut oil, argan oil, what is the right amount of each oil to combine of according to recipe as above ? 3. Can I use essential oil instead of fragrance oil ? 4. I only have optiphen plus as preservatives in here. Can I use that & what is the amount to use ? @bramble-berry 9 лет назад
Hi there! So glad you like the tutorial! Optiphen ND works best in water-based recipes, like toners and cleaning sprays. However, Optiphen would work great in this recipe. You can use it at .5-1.5%. The Talk It Out Tuesday: Preservatives post has more information on that: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/talk-it-out-tuesday-preservatives/ We love the liquid soap in this recipe because it adds some great lather. If you want to leave it out, I would recommend increasing the amount of water. Because the texture will be different without soap, a small test batch may be helpful for you. =)

I know this video is old but I have a few questions that hopefully will get answered. What is the shelf life of this scrub, do you go by oil shelf life that you use? also when I made this mine got very thick, not runny at all. I omitted the beeswax (hoping it wouldn't get too thick) and used hemp oil instead of Almond oil. As soon as I added water mixture to oil mixture is instantly thickened to a crisco consistency as soon as I blended it.

@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 9 лет назад
Hi Ayla! Distilled water has had any impurities removed through a process that involves boiling the water and condensing the steam in a clean container. While boiling your water at home may remove some impurities, it may not get all of them. I would definitely recommend using distilled water to prevent any bacteria or mold from growing. =)

This looks like a great product. Is it correct that it is a bodylotion with salt/ sugar and liquid soap added? So I should be able to use my own recipe for bodylotion and add sugar? @bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 7 лет назад
You're right, this product is essentially a mix between a lotion and a scrub. You definitely could add sugar to a lotion...I think that would work just fine! Without any soap, it would be more gentle, but I bet it would leave skin feeling nice and soft. Great idea Eva!

Can I skip the water and soap part and combine my oils, waxes, and preservative with my sugar?
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 9 лет назад
Hello! You can! Keep in mind not adding the water and soap won't make this an emulsified scrub anymore. That means it won't need to be stick blended. Also, you won't need to add the stearic acid or emulsifying wax, as you're not combining water and oils. The texture will be different, so you may want to make a small test batch to see if you like the consistency. You'll want to adjust the fragrance oil amount. To do so, you can use our Fragrance Calculator! Simply select "salts" in the drop down menu. Fragrance Calculator: www.brambleberry.com/Pages/Fragrance-Calculator.aspx You'll also want to adjust that preservative amount to be .5-1% of your recipe. Typically, you only include preservatives in recipes that have water. However, this scrub may have water splashed into it in the shower, so you can add a preservative to be extra careful. =) Talk It Out Tuesday: Preservatives: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/talk-it-out-tuesday-preservatives/

Hi Kim! Oils and water naturally don't mix with each other. That's why you add the emulsifier! It allows the oils and water in this recipe to mix and create a nice creamy consistency. I'll include a lotion video that explains more about the ingredients and what properties they add. =) Stearic acid helps make the scrub thicker and adds a nice fluffiness! Hi Carlos! Thanks for that suggestion! Lanolin is usually most similar to a butter (although sometimes it is liquid depending on how it has been processed), so you can use it in place of the mango butter in this recipe. You may want to make a small test batch to see if you like the texture. =)

Hi if I avoided beeswax altogether, would it be a problem in this recipe? You are simply amazing, thanks a lot :-)

The beeswax in this recipe helps create a thicker texture that feels really nice on the skin. I would recommend using it in this recipe to get the results you see in the video! =)

I'm looking to make this vegan and was wondering if the emulsifying wax is vegan friendly? I'm already subbing in candelilla wax instead of beeswax and plan to use avocado oil and coconut oil instead of sweet almond (one less thing to purchase). Please let me know ASAP - I already have a few people interested in it!

can i use catol oil in place of liquid soap and a shea butter or cocoa butter in place of mango ty
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 8 лет назад
Are you wanting to add castor oil to this recipe? Also, you can use another butter! I would recommend shea butter. It has a similar texture to mango butter. It's just a bit softer. =) Shea butter: www.brambleberry.com/Shea-Butter-P3220.aspx

Are there any good alternatives to beeswax for this recipe? It looks like a wonderful recipe that I would very much like to try.
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 10 лет назад
Hello! Instead of beeswax, you can use candelilla wax. It will create a softer scrub than the beeswax, so you may want to make a small test batch to see if you like the consistency. =) Candelilla wax: www.brambleberry.com/Candelilla-Wax-P4207.aspx

Neha Kedia It already has a cleansing agent in it. Its the liquid castille soap. If you don't have castille soap, you can always just add your own liquid face cleanser.

can I use Shea butter instead of Mango butter? will it make a difference?
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 9 лет назад
Hi Selina! You can! Shea butter and mango butter have similar consistencies, so shea butter would make a good substitute. Keep in mind although they are similar, they are not exactly the same. This means the texture of your scrub will be slightly different. You may want to make a small test batch to check the final product. =) Shea butter: www.brambleberry.com/Shea-Butter-P3220.aspx

Is there a possible substitution for the mango butter? I just placed an order before watching this video, and I really want to make this, but I didn't buy any mango butter. It's on the list for next time!
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 7 лет назад
Shea butter will work instead! It's a bit softer than mango butter, so the scrub will be softer overall. It will still feel really nice though. =) Read more about butters here: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/tips-and-tricks/all-about-butters-in-bath-beauty-products/ Shea butter: www.brambleberry.com/Shea-Butter-P3220.aspx

Can I substitute the liquid soap for the foaming bath butter?
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 7 лет назад
We haven't tried this recipe with Foaming Bath Butter, so I'm not entirely sure! My worry is that the Foaming Bath Butter's thick and fluffy texture would do odd things in the recipe. I would recommend using the recommended liquid soap. =) If you prefer scrubs with Foaming Bath Butter, you'll love this Pumpkin Spice Latte Scrub: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0R_SiiojI04.html

Thanks forthe video. can I use potassium sorbate as a preservative?
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 8 лет назад
+khaddy huss Potassium sorbate is typically used as a food preservative. We haven't done a lot of testing with it, so I'm not entirely sure how it would work in this recipe! I would recommend using Phenonip or Optiphen. They work well and preventing mold and bacteria growth. =) Read more about preservatives here: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/talk-it-out-tuesday-preservatives/

I love your videos but what is the difference between sugar and salt...I heard salt is to harsh on the skin while sugar is much better to use
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 8 лет назад
It depends on how big the salt is! In general, the bigger the grains, the more scrubby the product will be. For instance, coarse salt will be quite scrubby while fine grained salt will be a bit more gentle. If you prefer more gentle exfoliation, you can use sugar or finely grained salt. =) Read more about exfoliants here: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/tips-and-tricks/all-about-exfoliants/

i don't have liquid castile soap i have melt and pour soap can i use that instead
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 9 лет назад
Sonu K Hi Sonu! I'm not entirely sure if that would work! Because melt and pour solidifies at room temperature, it may do some weird things in this scrub. It may leave little bits of hardened soap, or want to separate from the scrub itself. I would definitely recommend using a liquid soap. =)

Can I make this without the steric acid and beeswax or even the mango butter?
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 8 лет назад
Without those ingredients, the scrub will be a lot thinner and may not emulsify as well. The stearic acid helps thicken and emulsify the scrub. We have some other scrubs that include oils and soap bases you may like instead! You can find those here: www.soapqueen.com/category/bath-and-body-tutorials/soaks-and-scrubs/

+Ana Gea We haven't worked with that preservative, so I'm not entirely sure! I would recommend contacting the manufacturer to find out if it's suitable for sugar scrubs. Hi Anne, May I know can this scrub be used daily & on the face? Thanks!
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 8 лет назад
+Nurhidayah Lod It depends on your skin and personal preference! If you have sensitive skin, the salt may be a bit too harsh for the face. I would recommend giving it a try and seeing what you think. If it's a bit too scrubby, you can use a more gentle exfoliant, like sugar. Also, the fragrance can be strong because it's right by your nose. You may want to make a small test batch and see what you think. =) Also, we recommend using scrubs 2-3 times a week. If you like, you can use them daily!

@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 8 лет назад
+ARVanZile We didn't try this recipe with oatmeal, but I believe that would be OK! I would recommend mixing the oatmeal with the salt beforehand and pouring into the liquid. You may want to make a small test batch to see if you like the way the oatmeal feels. =)
