Can you use this to create custom characters without replacing characters?

how did you launch the game at the moment where you edited it? when I run the test, the emulator starts as usual and I have to manually go through to the right moment

Well, you could always make fun stuff for personal use. I have the carefully planned hacks that I post online, and then I have the crazy shit I make for no soul but myself 😂

Yeah took me like a month of fiddling when I initially started messing with it, reverse engineering hacks to try and understand how it works. It is very satysfying to succesfully commit your own edits though, I usually end up with custom private edits of hacks I play, like in Order Of the Crimson Arm I gave Kurtis shades, changed his name to Cool Kurtis and upped his growths a bit. Also made the first antagonist, the paranoid mad king recrutable after defeating him, and gave myself a cameo.

You don't even need to memorize this. Just increase the number until you hit the desired rank.

Or you can just start from 1 then +30 ... +40 ... +50 ... +60 ... +70

By the way Mangs, if I finish said hack, would you be interested in playing it? It’s not just a slightly altered playthrough of the rom I’m editing, it’s actually its own experience. Think like how “The Last Promise” is.

You just need a Dsnoon to make a hack.

You should look at Immortal Sword which uses Microsoft XNA, so basically it is not a edited gba game but a pc game which looks like a gba game.

@@Artemas_16 Yeah I'm basically trying to make a PC game that looks like a GBA game. I know all the mechanics. I know the damage table and the luck mechanic. The AI will be nearly impossible to replicate without the dev's comments, but I'd honestly rather make it from scratch. The thing I don't know where to do is get the art.

@@alex_zetsu you can use FEBuilder to rip them. go to "advanced editors" -> type "animations" (or at least the first few letters) and click on "Battle Animations" -> then at the bottom right, hit "Export Battle Animation" -> then, when it pulls up the download location window in File Explorer, click on the "save as type" bar, and then click on "battle Animation" (there is a comment - also downloads a txt that give you all the info on how to string together the individual images) -> then just hit "save" like normal. it'll be a LOAD of images, so I recommend a folder per animation. also note that that animation is only for the weapon type selected in the FEBuilder Battle Anmations window up at the top left. (ie, 01 Lance or 02 Item etc) you'll have to select and download each one individually, and I always recommend a folder for each. even for unarmed (Item).

Yes, cutscenes are events, and you can change events. That being said it's often better to leave the existing events as they are to not mess with hardcoding. Just don't "use" them in your rom hack.

@@oof776 I know it been two weeks but I managed to find out how to get Erika and Seth to not move to certain places in the beginning. I also manged to change cutscenes and have made 4 unique characters with custom portraits. Thanks for the help again.... have a cookie 🍪

Yes. You would need to do a search for her name in the script and replace every mention of her. Alternatively, you can download the entire script as a text document, do a mass replace in notepad, and upload the script again. I will teach how to do text edits in a later video.

tbh, pokemon (especially gen 1 & 2) are literally spaghetti code. I tried at one point, but the tools arent as good as FEBuilder, and 9/10 times it crashed. it took me hours to figure out how to change my starters.

What was it like in the olden days?

@@Posby95 A few hackingtools that were downright broken and never got fixed and a hackingtool that worked, but was incredibly limited in what it could do.

Nah. Not making a unit move is done in the unit placer. A video will be made on that soon.

you can delete anything not hardcoded. rebuilding entirely is usually kind of difficult, so Ive found editing things as I go to be much easier. Do note that somethings like map events and the new-game-startup CAN be changed, but finding the events can be confusing, and straight-up deleting them can and will crash the game. I literally went through deleting pieces of the startup event, one at a time to figure out what crashed and what didn't. not very fun, but gave me a base to build off of.

Not for making characters, but when you start making events, it's a good habit to not excessively write to ROM.

They will probably do nothing with it since they shouldn´t be programmed to use it?

@@gicrueldad9520 make sense that enemy do not know how to use it. But if you have several knights in you army at map simultainiously and they all can use supply, won't that break rom?

I don't even remember if the supply option does anything in this game. It's a weird leftover from the earlier games and FE8 instead has hardcoded values for Eirika and Ephraim.(Though there is a patch to give any number of units access to the supply)
