Making Halloween Backdrops

Creating nice backdrops for photo opp spots isn't as hard as it would seem. I've been creating scenes for 10+ years and in this video I go over how I made an Alice in Wonderland type backdrop for Halloween 20223.
I have 7 main tips for anyone looking to make simple photo spots or even large wall or haunted house coverings. I talk about and go over each of these in the video but here they are as well:
tip 1: Use tall vertical strips of fabric. These can be connected, hung side by side, to cover your space
tip 2: Make a short piece that you can use to cover the top of an existing doorway. That is an easier way to create an entrance.
tip 3: scene setters are cheap and easy, but because they are plastic, they reflect the light in the room and also the flash of the camera. Fabric will yield much better results!
tip 4: Using something with your measurements already marked out (like a 1x4 board) will be faster and consistent. You can use a tape measure every time but it's clumsy and takes longer.
tip 5: Fat markers! Using thicker markers will decrease the amount of time it takes to color in your drawings
tip 6: Keep the design and background simple. You can add as much detail as you would like but it's going to take more time. The main content is what we will put in front of these backdrops, so you don't necessarily need to make them so detailed.
tip 7: Roll up the sheets for storage. This will keep the sheets from having creases and make them easier to use. If you fold them, you may have to spend a few hours ironing them which I found out the hard way.
tip 8: Don't use black or very dark colors for photo spots. Most people have a lot of black in their Halloween costumes. Your subjects will get washed out and the details of their costumes will be lost. This tip is not in the video!

If you have any questions or comments, I'd love to hear from you. And if you make your own backdrops, I'd love to see them. Please post a comment below.
Happy Halloween!

Love it, keep them coming. Been loving your style for literal years The 'empty' paint silhouette for the bats was a nice pop

@@whisperscream8297, thanks! Years you say? Do you know me just from RU-vid or from ZombiePumpkins? I was a little worried about the silhouettes. I wanted to make this backdrop a bit more “Halloween” and decided to do a few sheets with those different items. I had no idea how it would look or turn out, but I was very happy with the outcome. Because the paint was diluted quite a bit, the bleed after spraying made a nice “shadow” and that was completely unanticipated.

I work at a haunted house at a community theater and I plan on making a stone tunnel going into my area and want to make the wall out of sheets. I was going to make it one big piece, but I like the idea of strips. It seems more manageable, plus it will be easier to use them for other projects. Thanks.

Wow! You have the dream job 😅 A tunnel might be a bit harder, at least the curved top, but sheets should be better for use in the future. Here’s a link to a write up of when I made the stone wall sheets: www.zombiepumpkins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=12097

Good tips. I find using backdrops from recycled canvas or old sheets really economical.

Thanks! And a comment from my first viewer 🤩 Old sheets are a great idea and you might be able to find plenty for really cheap down at a thrift shop.

Thanks! The hat was hard to make. We couldn’t find anything decent for a reasonable price. It was my first go at foam crafts but in the end, it worked out 🎉
