Have you ever wanted to make a template but your mannequin head is too small or big? Maybe you need a good base to make a bust of your favorite character. Or maybe you just want to proudly display a helmet or mask that you worked super hard to build. In this video, I show you how to make your very own mannequin head and scale it to fit your needs. For this build, I used: 4 mm and 6 mm EVA foam, contact cement, super glue, Plasti Dip, and something to weigh down the bottom. You may also need the following tools: a heat gun, a Dremel with various bits, and an Exacto knife or box cutter. Let me know in the comments below if you would like to see more like this one, from shows, video games, or whatever. Please smack that like button, dropkick subscribe, and share with as many people as possible.

When I’m butting EVA pieces together, I dust a tiny (seriously tiny) amount of baby powder onto my table surface, so the pieces are perfectly flush, and my hand tremors don’t defeat my attempts. Smaller mandrels on posts are helpful, too! Great pattern! Thanks!!!

I made a head form from Punished Props and then got a disc shaped piece of wood from joanne fabrics and glued it to it. Works well to display my full 3D printed Samurai helmet with a Subzero menpo. Yours would be awesome to make too because it's more than the head and neck.

The more I build the more I realize that we all have different approaches that are helpful in certain circumstances. Bill has a pretty awesome one, Cosplay Apprentice has some epic display mount ideas, Evil Ted and Odin Makes as wellhave different approaches. I just love the sea of knowledge at our fingertips nowadays. A new skill is only a click away.

You have acoustic foam but your voice is still incredibly echo-y. Have you considered getting a mic with an allround pop filter? Or one of those clip oms for your shirt? I love your videos wholeheartedly, you're an absolute beast when it's about propmaking and I wish you much success with it. You deserve it.
@MuchProps
@MuchProps 2 года назад
I have been doing research on some mics to remedy this issue. My voice over mic is fairly crisp, but the intro and outro parts I use a shotgun mic. Even though it's only 4 or 5 ft from the camera, there is a lot of background noise that I try to fix digitally. I have a nice one hopefully ordered and, 🤞, it will improve the sound quality

I wonder if u could foam fill it with A B foam so u can sculpt on top of it with wed clay ?
@MuchProps
@MuchProps 10 месяцев назад
Maybe. The EVA would still compress under the weight of clay. You could probably cover it in Worbla or a thermoplastic to make it more rigid.
@beckymurphy4714
@beckymurphy4714 2 года назад
Hmm. I wonder if I could use this as a head on my dressmaker's dummy, if I leave off the bottom? It'd be nice to have a head for styling wigs, or seeing how the helmet will fit with the shoulder armor. Styrofoam heads tend to be smaller than my head.
@MuchProps
@MuchProps 2 года назад
I could think so. If you left the bottom and shoulder ends you should be able to just slide it over the top of it.

So I decided to give this a go. To say a got frustrated would be a severe understatement. Turns out, when your friend prints out the template in black and white, you completely forget about the 45° cuts. I cannot BEGIN to tell you how impossible my journey has been so far. However after deciding that I must be doing something wrong (which I was) because nothing is working, down to my choice of glue (guess I got bad advice), I decided to come back here for more help and to ask a couple questions if you don’t mind? How do you achieve the precise slanted cuts? And is gorilla glue original okay to use on this? It foams and it’s time consuming but it’s what I’ve got. Also, I guess while I’m here, would I be able to make a full head helmet from clay foam on EVA foam? Like, on this mannequin?
@MuchProps
@MuchProps Месяц назад
Sorry it's not been an easy experience. Maybe I can help you figure out your issues. I will do my best to answer your questions. 1. Yes, you may ask me a couple of questions 😃, off to a good start. 2. I achieve relatively consistent slanted cuts from years of practice working with foam. The basics are to put the tip of the blade on your cutting surface, tilt your blade handle to the angle you need, try your best to hold that angle ( lock your wrist), use a sharp hobby knifebor cutting utensil, and pull through you material I'm as clean a pull as possible. If you still struggle after practicing, they make blade holding tools that cut at angles, Cos-Tools is one inhave used in the past. 3. I would assume using Gorilla glue original is okay. Super glue can make the foam a little brittle if used over large areas. I prefer to use contact cement as it is a little flexible when joined. You could also use hot glue if you are patient enough. 4. Pushing clay foam onto the surface of a foam mannequin will probably stick to the surface unless you put a barrier on it like saran wrap, foil, or duct tape I would also avoid using heat over the mannequin as it will separate the seams or deform your foam. Hopefully, this helps. My answers are by no means the only answers possible. Another great source for techniques are channels like Cosplay Apprentice, SKS Props, Evil Ted, Xieng Prod, Punished Props, and Odin Makes.

@@MuchPropsafter posting my last comment I decided to have a go at some of the pieces I already had cut out and not glued together in an ungodly manner, and took a pair of scissors to give them that angle (the knife didn’t want to cut an already cut edge I guess it’s too fancy). While it does look like a hack job, it looks like a consistent hack job, and I’m thinking that with the glue expanding, it will level out any of the oddness (the seems and connecting the sections make SO MUCH sense now 😅). I decided to just start over with the chest pieces to be quite honest. Practice makes perfect (but heavens does it also cost money). Also in regards to the helmet, my plan is to technically create a mashup of two helmets for display purposes only (it’s actually a little gift 😊), and so I figured I could use this mannequin as the base for it. I’ve looked to see if anyone has done this but all I see are at most, vids of how to use clay foam to add pieces to the EVA foam designed mask/helmet. I essentially want to “take a drumstick and add hot glue to make a wand” type deal. I’ve seen things suggesting I’d need some sort of adhesive or essentially to score the areas (for me, the whole mannequin) to allow this to stay. I’m just curious if that’s the only way?

Never tried silicone mask making so I am not sure. As long as you made good connections with the foam and left a hole in the bottom or back for foam expansion to escape I would think it would work
