In this video I pour some metal owls to give to some friends.
The pewter ones are cast in silicone molds, the Aluminium ones are poured in a steel mold.
The fails were re-molten and poured again, and again, and again 😅
until I had enough nice ones to give away.

Awesome Ralph, it's really cool that you do these things for people. I also think you should rename this video Dusty's hooters like you said in her stream😂 Your Mum must dread the damage in her garage every time you get casting lol, I did giggle again when I saw the garage door and thought you were setting the table on fire this time! Also, love the rather fitting clip of my favourite guy you put in there...love a bit of silly Jim humour! Great vid...look forward to the newest dumpster diving one!!!!⏳👈😜

duller gray normal means higher lead pewter until 1974 had more lead in it after 1974 it was not expectable to cast with if it was to come in contact with skin and not to eat or drink out of so 1978 is safe to use

I think the color is from the molds you could be pulling some of the die out of the mold

It's really cool that you can use silicone as an ingot. They give them a lot of detail.

Great video!!! I wonder if the "gray" matte finish is not from the silicone moulds. they could be holding moisture like 3d printer filament and a couple hours in the food dehydrator might help... Also some of those moulds might be breaking down at high heat and the bubbles could the be the off gassing of the silicone. it looks like some of the trays are not the same chemical makeup as others perhaps a cheaper variant is what burns and bubbles up..? Did you make that 3d owl mould?? they came out great!!

Thanks for watching and commenting! all the silicone molds are bought from various websites, Wish, Ali-Express, Amazon ... all over the place. I will at some point try and cast custom silicone molds. Stay Tubed! 👊👍

I've melted and poured probably 50-60 pounds of zinc and it seems like each one has a different color, from shiny to dull gray. Used the same mould each time. And yeah I know about zinc, I used to work in a commercial HVAC fabrication shop. Nothing worse than pulling an all nighter welding galvanized metal and running outside to "toss your kneecaps" out your nose. In melting I've kept my temps down low enough to prevent boil off.

no need to retire that crucible, just pour it from a different direction and don't fill it so much!

have you tried popping the bubbles with your torch? could damage the silicone i suppose
