I made my own homemade or DIY steam generator for sterilizing my mushroom substrate. The purpose of this steam boiler is to produce enough steam to heat my substrate to sterilize or pasteurize it. The mushroom substrate needs to be kept at boiling temperature for a long period of time, in excess of 10 hours generally. To achieve this I built my own steam generator which operates very efficiently and for very long periods. The last thing I needed to do was install a safety float valve so the element turns off if the water level gets too low. The safety switch breaks the circuit from the PID controller to the solid-state relay, causing the element to shut off. It's very simple in its function buy works great.

Always glad to see another one of your videos. I loved that you took the time to do calculations on the efficiency of your setup. Have you thought about SLIGHTLY pressurising your tank by passing the steam through a water column before it exits the system? I'm curious if that could help shorten the runtime.

Fantastic, The new insulation looks a lot nicer now but can you stick a bit of silver tape around the PIR board under the weight. Might as well make it 100%. 🤙

@@plasmapanasonic4741 that might work, but wrong kind of acid. Citric acid can be had for cheap in bulk off amazon and similar. Works awesome for cleaning up scale and making fizzy drinks taste tart.

Would this work for a diy steam room? And is there an attachment that fills the tank when it’s too empty? It would be great if, like a toilet, it had a device that caused water to fill it when it was too low…

Does this sterilize the grain spawn? Or the substrate? Or both? An how long would you have to leave 10 individual bags of grain in there weighing 3 pounds each? And what is the cost to run it? I eagerly wait for your response, thanks. ✌️😎

Oy!! How safe is it using a specific weight for lid allowing some pressure to build wo being explosive??? What weight is best and what pressure will it allow by weight? I'm thinking and have been before I saw your vids...but since.you already do or have...but I'm thinking a 55gallon barrel which will be boiler to flow from and into my insulated box...maybe even a few bats in the barrel also before being hosed to the box. Any pointers or Advice? Also 55gallon barrel w the lid being held on with bicycle tire inner tube as the "ring" holding the lid on. A quick summary is all I'm asking on weight of lid cover for pressure safely but ill take all you wanna say!!! Thx mate

Great stuff! Can you also add the Safety Float Switch dimensions to the the steamer blueprint? Cheers Also, the straight arm float valve you linked: Are we supposed to bend it when we install it?

So the straight arm can be installed on the underside of the device. I will throw a link for the bent arm on on the video now.

Hi Tom, a few questions: - Does the steamer blueprint you sell now reflect the location of the Safety Float Switch? - Did you end up adding the Temperature Switch that you mentioned in your earlier video (which you couldn't install at the time of your arm injury)? - Any idea when the wiring schematics for the PID will become available? Great work as always!

No, the blueprint doesn't have a hotel drilled for the float valve. I've left it out so people can drill a hole for their specific valve. All you need is a drill. Wiring diagrams are on the horizon, but I've got a full plate, so won't be too soon.

Yeah, it works well. I purchased a high quality German one.
