Personally I would epoxy first, warm the beam up to remove the bubbles and finish with a high gloss varnish 👍

@@yorkneytrailrider1751magic carpet just did that with their bowsprit looks fine and you get the epoxy base coat to completely encapsulate the wood against moisture and rot.

And it protects it against UV damage, not as important below decks but it’s a protector all the same 👍😉

On my friends 104' 1943 Army Rescue Vessel. He restored in the early 1980s. We used 220 gallons of epoxy,. Unknown bags of filler and powdered bakelight. Redoing the decks.and cabin sides and tops. Then 12 gallons of white inron aircraft paint. An insane numbee of planks were replaced, the entire transom. I helped him on and off for 22 years on that. I very much enjoy this series.

Epoxy has little or no UV resistance, so you should varnish with a good UV resistant varnish anyway over the epoxy. Epoxy is also difficult to repair. I epoxied my beautiful mahogany cabin doors,[exterior], to preserve them and varnished over. They were lovely. But the sun soon turned them yellow and ugly. I had to use epoxy stripper to refinish them,[ugly job], then recoated with Epifanes varnish. They have remained beautiful for years and to renew them is a simple new coat of varnish. In my opinion, Epifanes is the best, highest UV protection and although expensive, is very labor saving down the road. The best shipwright I know says that 5 coats of Epifanes is the most waterproof finish he knows. Interior work you may get away with a less expensive varnish. Lots of comments in favor of varnish, and I agree, though it's more work now and in the long run. It is out of the weather, so should last well. But what has struck me in the last few weeks is the quality of the videos! Absolutely marvelous progress in story planning, composition, music and editing, especially since the (not that bad) beginning. Well done, Jemma! (And Si is STILL amazingly clever and reminds me of my Dad. And funny and sweet as well!) At 75 you are setting an example for me.

I will say Varnish is the right way. I must say both of you have been working very hard. Repairing a Wooden Boat is not easy work. I take it to be that you were a Boat Builder before. It must cost you a very big fortune for all the material, as well as Repairing that Boat. When I was working in the Printing Trade, my ex boss use to use me week ends to come and help them. They were building a Fishing Trawler, from Scratch. It was actually a Boat Builder that put the Idea in his head, but of course it was worked from a plan. Unfortunately my me I had resigned that job, and did not see them finish the Boat. What you are doing is very interesting. I wish you all the best of luck. Keep well, and kind regards, Clive. 🇿🇦👍

HI All, Love the work you do! Watch every week. My suggestion on the Deck Beams. Epoxy the part that Touches the Deck and Varnish the rest. A combo. This way you can actually Epoxy the Deck boards to the Beams themselves to prevent Rot from the portion of wood that touches the Beam to the deck. Varnish everything that is visible. Love it!

For finishing I would use varnish, but I would thin the first coat a lot, then sand with wet and dry between coats, and gradually reduce the thinners for each coat. I used this process for a mahogany mast and the result was stupendous.

The snag with epoxy on large pieces is the wood can no longer breathe. Water locked in at the start is there for ever more. Slow drying oil based varnishes solar well into the timber but do add a yellow tint that gets even more so as as it ages.

I’m another one for the varnish, although you can do a base in epoxy then varnish, suggest epifanes rapid clear, very thinned then reduce for each coat, these can be ‘hot coated’ 1-2 times a day! But if sanding need to be cured for longer. Then some gloss, with light or wet/dry to fully flatten, then more coats until you are satisfied with it. I have mahogany/beech laminated beams in my boat and look great about 13/14 coats in all!! Great work!
