It's time to start preparing the bees for spring build-up. A good way to help boost colony build-up is feeding pollen patties or pollen substitutes. In this video, I use Ultra Bee sub to make pollen patties.

Hey Jason, you made a lot less mess than me!! Well done! Just ordering 2 x 50 lb bags and brewers yeast to add in for autumn winter feed next fall. Despite our amazing ivy flow( with pollen) I am convinced that getting the bees and hives full of proteins is one of our most important tasks going in to the winter! I am sure it will help in many ways! 🙏🙌🐝🐝🐝

Hey Richard, Yes I had a decent mess happening in this video. I am anxious to see if the patties get hard once they are out of refrigeration and out in the open air. If you read the side of the bucket it say to use HFCS (High-fructose corn syrup) and not sucrose, did you notice that? I think the HFCS helps to keep the patties pliable. Have you checked you nucs? Did your patties turn hard?

Jason Chrisman patties as of yesterday are soft. I did a little update video and on one of the Patties, the finger test, still lovely and soft! I think that’s why most use the wax cooking paper because it keeps on what’s already there, taking away its ability to dry. However I do reckon certain mixes could go hard, without drying out! I know one Beekeeoer in North America who mixes his and as you say puts the paper , then the blob directly on top of the bees, then moves it around, flattening it out. The moisture content facilitates this too! A big learning curve for me too! Was worth doing it. Good future reference! Looks like you learnt a lot too! Good stuff! Lest see how the bees develop now!!👌🏻😊🐝🐝🐝

Another thing the apple cider vinegar does is make the Ph closer to that of the necter. sugar is Ph 6.2 to 6.9 necter is Ph 3.4 to 5.1. this is a good thing as the higher Ph alloows things like chalk brood EFB and AFB to proliferate. There is also some scientic data that it may have an effect on mites too.

Might be an idea to only add 3/4 of the water just in case you got your mix slightly off, you can always add more but if its sloppy your stuck especially if you have used all your ingredients in the batch. the bees will clean the bucket 😉

Gentle too. I am thankful for the gentle part first beehive and first time I wrangled bees today they are all over sugar water. Here there is tons in bloom I don't think I need to feed pollen they are bringing a lot in.

This will definitely save me money cause the patties seemed expensive for what you get. I'm a newbeek and I got the pail of feed last week but the bees didn't seem like they wanted any of that since pollen and nectar are plentiful right now. Good to know that I have several ways I can use it to feed them in the future when it is needed.

I've used patties in the past, worked fine. I've gotten lazy in my old age though and I hate eating up freezer space to store them. I just started making pollen frames with drawn out comb frames. I trade one frame from the outside edge of the box with my pollen frame. Goes pretty fast and it's not very messy. The cells usually always angle up just a tad and it stays in there pretty well if you're not too reckless with them. If some spills inside the hive big deal. Obviously it's not going to supply the other stuff you have mixed in there but I'm not sure how much of that I'd consider "needed"....just more expense and the pollen sub isn't cheap.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 лет назад
So your pouring the dry pollen sub into the cells of the frames? I've done this with syrup but never pollen sub.. Are you sure they are using it? I may need to try this idea, it almost sounds too easy though. lol
@Digger927
@Digger927 5 лет назад
@@JCsBees I've never had bees NOT clean it up. I dunno, maybe if they had a strong influx of natural pollen maybe they wouldn't. Yeah I just pour it straight on the frame and tap the frame to shake it down in the cells. I took the idea from Michael Palmer, he runs pollen traps so he uses real pollen but he makes and uses them to raise queens. I figured if it worked for that then why not just use the concept to give the bees their boost in the spring for buildup. It seems more efficient than free feeding and I don't have to deal with rain or feeders or the mess of pollen patties. However I'll say that patties do have some advantages...like plopping them in without breaking completely in the hive besides the other stuff you have in there may be good to have in there.

Hi Jason. Good video mate but I think your patties are to big. We make allot of pollen patties and have found if you make them to big allot goes to waste. We make ours about a quarter of the size of yours. We are nuc/queen breeders situated in Western Australia and find it works for us on our big hives. Our nuc patties are even smaller as you would expect. Enjoy watching your channel to see how you guys do it over there. Hope you have a good season as we have had the worst season in 55 years! Next year will be better😅😅😅
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 лет назад
@Eddie Naude The reason I made my so big was to make sure they could access them on chill spring days. I wanted to make sure they would cover several frames. You could be 100% correct and if so I will make adjustments next time I make patties. I appreciate the insight and thanks for being a fan of my channel. Why was it such a bad year for you?
@eddienaude9117
@eddienaude9117 5 лет назад
Jason our weather in Australia was totally abnormal and we never got going at all as the nectar flows we uncharacteristically sporadic and short. The whole beekeeping community here say it's been the worst season ever. We have fed all season just to keep the bees alive. Most people aren't harvesting instead leaving what honey there is for the bees. Watch your season closely maybe this is going to be a worldwide trend this season. Hope not. I was watching Barnyard Bees and his Maple tree flow was a washout this year??? Keep us posted on how your season unfolds.

@Barry Ballard Not sure how I missed your comment but I did, sorry! I bet you are anxious for your bees. I am the same for bees season to start so I can start building them up. The last week or so we have been missed by the rains so we are too muddy here right now but we did have our share a few wees back. I hate when chickens have to walk in mud, that just mean really dirty eggs.

Hmmm...... At my last look at prices it was $35 for 10 Ultra Bee Patties and about the same for the bucket of dry pollen. The difference is the bucket of dry pollen along with my recipe make well over 40 patties. So as you gain 30+ patties by making your own.

@@JCsBees that's your territory. It really does not get cold enough to stop the bees. They slow down but can get some kind of pollen year round. But I really did just get a wild hive yesterday. It is my first hive. It has a lot of hive beetles. That is my very first order of business. They have to go. I have to remove the hive from an old gas grill. I will reduce the number of hive beetles then and then beetle traps and possibly oxalic acid. But I do not see the point in giving them pollen. I watched them today their numbers are strong and they are bringing in pollen in a steady flow. I do have sugar syrup feeders and gave them that as soon as I brought them home.

Hi Jason, I have a question not directly related to pollen patties, but about over-wintering. Some northern beekeepers use brood-box wraps to help the bees keep the boxes warm enough to survive northern climates. What do you think about using hay bales stacked around the hives? Since I've had horses all my life, I'm a huge fan of using hay to keep small critters warm--we over-wintered a cage of guinea pigs in our hay barn by stacking bales all around the cage, just leaving room to get in to feed and water. Guinea pigs are native to South America, and don't handle cold weather well at all. They did great in our hay barn. Is there any reason you couldn't do the same concept with bee hives--assuming you have the bales handy. I'm not sure hay would be cheaper than hive wraps, but just wanted to ask what you thought about it. Thanks!
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 3 года назад
Hello, First let me explain that I think wrapping is a waste of time. I personally don't think bees have a hard time handling cold weather they've been overwintering without the help of beekeepers for many years. I think wrapping just causes the hive to warm up to easily which then warms up the bees who break cluster and eat. I rather see the bees stay clustered so food stores last. That said, I do think a wind block is a great idea and hay bales would work great. The only concern I would have is the mice that will be drawn to the bales which could try to get in to hive. Maybe if you keep enough space between bales and bees you would be alright. Just make sure to use good mouse guards.
@Doxymeister
@Doxymeister 3 года назад
@@JCsBees Yes, hay does tend to draw mice--we had the dickens of a time fighting mice in the guinea pig cage! LOL, those guinea pigs eventually found their way into my cousin's daughter's classroom! Really no place for them on a working farm, tbh, although they are great pets. Thank you for the response, I wondered about the "nature vs. nurture" issue. Cheers!

@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 лет назад
As long as they have food close during the cold period they should be fine. It sounds like yours needed warmer weather to move to more food. One reason is it is easier to apply. You just lay the patty on paper on top of the frames.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 лет назад
@Robert Wiley Like Joe said, it's hard to feed dry pollen to bees inside the hive. In the spring when we have cool days or nights the bees don't go far from the cluster and I don't know of anyway to feed pollen closer to them than with a patty. Plus, I believe they need some kinda moisture to eat it. When they collect pollen they add nectar.

Hi Jason, I just discovered your channel today. I’m fairly new to beekeeping, and I believe our bee yards are fairly close to each other. I live near 62 and 661, in McKean township. My question is about wintering nucs. I’m a big fan of David at barnyard bees. He’s claiming he can get a 2 frame nuc through the winter in North Georgia. I know that’s not possible in our area, but I was wondering what your experience has been with getting nucs through the central Ohio winter. Is it possible to get a packed out 5 frame nuc, through the winter successfully? Any information would be greatly appreciated, and keep up the good work!

I have had it since 2003 right after my brother was murdered. My brother turned in a guy in his apartment building for being a child predator. A few weeks later the guy returned and knocked on his door, when my brother opened the door he was shot in the chest and died minutes later. It's something I don't talk about much but not because it bothers me. I am just the type to keep stuff like that to myself even though talking would probably do me a world of good. The book I picked the tat from said it stood for spiritual energy, no idea rather it really does or not. lol I went and bought a tattoo gun and did it and one on my leg myself. The one on my leg is a sun with my brother initials in it. I must say in 10 years of making videos, you are the first to ask about the tattoo. Thanks for that seriously, it felt good to share! :)

I'm glad you're not in the dog house! I had to laugh when you said how sticky and messy you might make the kitchen! Yes indeed, nature knows best! It's always good to take note of natural cycles and learn from them when we can! I seen your tattoo and though I knew it wasn't Hangul, but it looked to be some kind of writing and I just had to ask. When I first started reading your reply about the tattoo I initially regretted asking to be honest because I had no idea the meaning behind it. That is an incredibly sad and touching story. It definitely pulled at my heart strings reading it and I am very sorry for your loss! Thank you for sharing! For just buying a tattoo gun and doing it yourself, I think you did an fantastic job! I think you and I are a lot alike when it comes to taking DIY to it's fullest potential. lol. Take care!

Thanks for the video. I just want to mention that I think you made a mistake in your recipe for the ONE pound. You have 2.5 TEAspoons and I think you meant TABLEspoons. If the 10 pound recipe is correct, 10x2.5 Tablespoons comes out to 1 1/2 cups. If it was teaspoons, it would be 1/2 cup plus one teaspoon.

Awesome video Jason. Where do you place the pattie? I heard the correct way is to place them between brood and honey super (on top of the queen excluder), but that means more work (remove the honey supers first). Do you think it's ok to place over the honey super ( under the beehive lid?) Thanks 🐝😊

Jason do you do any fall pollen feeding? I was reading on Scientific Beekeeping "Fat Bees" he feeds pollen in the fall as well, and his hives are over twice as strong come Spring, yielding better splits/honey crop. Im going to use this mixture and try it this week. Was curious on your experience.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 3 года назад
I think feeding patties in the Fall is a great idea you just have to be careful they don't get infested with small hive beetles due to the patties. I suggest only feeding what the bees can eat in a few day then add more. Best of luck Adam!

What is the advantage of patties vs dry pollen sub?
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 лет назад
The advantage with patties is it's way easier to feed inside the hive than dry pollen. The dry pollen is usually placed in feeders away from the hive and this time of year the bees can't always get out of the hive to get to it.

You said 10 lbs pollen sub but your recipe card shows 13 lbs. Also, there are 16 TBL in a cup, so 32 TBL in 2 cups. If you are dividing that by 10 lbs, that would be 3.2 TBL oil per lb of sub.
@yu-hsiakao7784
@yu-hsiakao7784 4 года назад
It looks like base on 13 lbs recipe, if you divide everything by 13 for the 1 lb recipe, the answer exactly the same as recipe card shows.

I guess maybe it would be worth figuring out more about the hive beetles to see if they are a threat in the spring. I would imagine they would need a certain temperature to incubate. I know they live in soil.

@@deandufour6424 From what I have read, if hive beetles are a problem you don't necessarily need to stop using pollen patties. The problem is how long they sit on the frames. I can't remember the source but they said to cut the patties, paper and all, into thirds or quarters so that they are eaten quick enough that they don't also provide for pests.

In S.C., we have infestations of hive beetles. They thrive in shady, damp, & high humidity places. We can clean them up & control them with beetle traps & wintergreen oil.
