Autumn is traditionally the harvest season, and that means locally grown fresh vegetables and fruit are ready to hit a dinner table near you! This is the time of year to gather together to share what we are thankful for, and this project will make for the perfect centrepiece serving dish!
This month Todd has cooked up a project that will be sure to impress your dinner guests or be the perfect way to present your special dessert at the family meal. With the simple to use molding toolpath, and a bit of planning we can make a double-sided wooden pie dish and, using a single 3D model of a pumpkin top, create a lid for it.
We have included the ‘Pumpkin Top’ model from Design & Make in the file so you don’t need to go purchase it… its free. Just keep in mind that the model will not be reflected in your D&M account and VCarve users will not be able to export it from the file as a stand-alone piece of clipart.
These FREE projects comes with the file(s) for you to download from your V&CO account. For those of you yet to try our software packages, why not download our FREE trial software with these project files and give it a go!
Happy Making!

Great project! I often use the moulding toolpath (many users do not know it exists). One more feature that I personally would add would be to use a threading toolpath so the lid screws on the base.

Another awesome project Todd. I found this a little too late for this last season because I was consumed with making things during the holidays. I wasn't watching or producing much Social Media. But this is in my to do list for this year. Great job.

This was a terrific tutorial on using the VCarve desktop software. Thank you for the knowledge, I learned a lot and am happy to be growing in my software knowledge. I have always struggled with two sided projects mostly because I can't seem to wrap my head around doweling. I'm still not sure I completely get it.

Awesome project great video and I would love to make this for my wife. But how could I ever do this on a CNC with Table dimensions of 12” x 18″ and an XYZ travel distance of 12” x 13” x 3”? I think I would have break it down to do the top side and flip, then the bottom side and flip. Then I am wondering if I could handle the thickness on my Z? Any suggestions? Or is my CNC to small to handle it? Thanks.....PS Just a new guy learning CNC and trying to learn this Vetric Desktop Software.

Hey Max... I can see on your channel you have a NextWave SD110... and we happen to have one here in the labs. I think you would be OK... you just might need to cut the lid and the bottom on 2 different sheets or jobs... not one like I have it set up. The Z travel looks to be OK... but that would depend on the length of your cutter. If I was you I would start by editing the file, and then make sure your cutter can make it through your material with out hitting the collet. If you take your time and think it through... I bet you could make this a very suscessiful project!!!

Great video and thanks so much for explaining the moulding toolpath so well. Being able to create them like that will definitely come in handy. Curious - how long did the job take on your CNC machine? Just curious...
@vectric
@vectric 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for the question... We cut it on and Avid CNC so we really could push the feeds and speeds. I believe it just took a few hours to cut the top and 45min for the bottom.

I am currently in the middle of running the file. It’s going great , however, tool path 5 for the top of the design left some grooves in the right side of the plate as it tapers up. It cleared out nicely on the left side. Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions to clean it up any better? It can be sanded out but when I run the tool path in the future, I would like it to clean up all the way around.
@vectric
@vectric 3 месяца назад
Hello and thanks for the comment. CIf you can't see it in the toolpath priview then it might be a machine issue. If you have any pictures of the "before sanding" the part... could you send them off to support@vectric.com and mention the issue.

Thanks for the question. You will need to download it from you V&Co account. As I mentioned in the video... the pumpkin top is a D&M model, but it is embedded in the project file. It won't be reflected in yout D&M account. www.vectric.com/vectric-community/free-projects/in-the-labs/PumpkinPieDish

I want to make this to surprise my wife. But my machine will not do 24.5" in X. Could you please rotate it 90° ? I can do 26" in Y....Thanks
@vectric
@vectric 7 месяцев назад
Hello... and thanks for the question. Actually you can rotate it if you like. Top tip, to make it easier and have it line up... create a rectangle the same size as the job space, on both sides of the job. Then simply swap the X and Y dimentions in the job setup. When you do that you will then need to select all of the vectors and components and totate them to fit (you can use 0 or 9 on your keyboard to do this). The retangle you created will keep everything in place. Recaculate the tooling and priview both sides of the toolpath simulation... it sould look OK.

I enjoyed doing this, but then realized it is much too small for my wife's normal "pie tins", as they are all about an inch larger. :-(
@vectric
@vectric 7 месяцев назад
Hello and thanks for the comment. I did not have a pie tin on hand so I went to Amazon to get some realworld measurments. I know the ones in our house are different in size, but are also not standard seeing as I made them out of pottery. The size is easy to ajust in the file if you follow the process I used. Sorry... might make a nice cookie dish??? :)
