In this episode, I show in detail the process of creating a tempo map of a live drum performance, chopping up a loop and quantizing it to the live drum performance so it will be phase accurate throughout the performance. I also go through all of the drum mix settings for the song.

Yes, he is giving away a lot of "inside industry" information, secrets and tricks. By doing this, Eric saves the art of mixing and audio engineering. In the era of beats and hip hop I am noticing the ever increasing degradation of tastes and preferences for complex music in the general public. This primitivization process is detrimental to the art of music production. And computerization is not the culprit. Someone has to pass on the craft for it to continue living. I can't thank enough people like Eric, Warren Huart, Rick Beato and others.

@FresnoCAPunkrockMetalHardcore OldFigGang Untill u started watching mixers(pensado etc.) my beats were on point, leveled and clear, mixing was just something i was doing along the way...but...when i started exportimg stems, doing the "mixers" job i was failing so hard and i kept doing it until i learned that i do that already while making a beat, and my master buss got 4-5 plugins, there no way to make it batter later trying to "master" it... Wierd and heavy learning curve that bumped me a bit backward, it took me few months to get back to basics, when i heard Mike Dean talking how he mix when he produce and how he never sidechain it felt like home. But this brings my respect for mixers who can do that afterwards, maybe i could do it, but not for my beats. Had to put it out. Cheers

chris young it is a pro tools plugin called “time adjuster”. There are some 3rd party versions that might work with reaper. The best of which is definitely precision time align from Eventide. Best of luck with it!

Hi Eric! Thanks for making these videos and for the tutorial on tempo mapping. I tried this for a song that should be very tight in the chorus but a bit more moving in the verses. So I decided to beat detect the chorus to a fixed tempo and tempo map the verses. After doing this I recognized some timing issues at the end of a verse, so I wanted to erase some beat markers and re-edit the timing. Unfortunately when erasing these markers the whole timeline for the rest of the song is shifting as well, and my already edited chorus is not on the grid anymore. I ended up moving the chorus manually cause the timing is good, it just isn’t in sync with the grid anymore. Am I missing something, or doing something wrong, or is it not possible to remove beat markers without changing the rest of the grid. Next time I’ll make sure that everything is timed well before creating the best map, but I’m looking forward to any suggestion that you could offer on this topic. Best wishes from Austria :)
@1993KrisM
@1993KrisM Год назад
If you change the tempo map it will throw off everything after, a little work around is make a cut in grid mode right on the first beat of the measure (after the area you are changing the tempo). Make the tempo changes, then in grid mode select from the cut you made to the end of the song, and move that to where the first beat of the measure is now. Hope that helps!

How important is the pitch of the bass drum you match with the kick you've been recording? Does difference in pitches could bring some issues, I mean the attack will be matched but then the positive and negative of the waveform might cancel or be out of phase with each other? EDIT : As I type the question, Eric just notify the issue at about 45:00!

Would you do the drum first, edit the few bits, tempo map then track all the other instruments to that "custom" click track and drums? Amazing videos, as usual, been a while since I've learned that much on youtube (+ it's coming from one of my favourite producers)
@mrwev
@mrwev 5 лет назад
Yes! that is basically it. Track drums and then, the best bits together, do the tempo map then chop up the loop and quatize it to the comp'd/map'd drums. It is better to never track instruments to un-comp'd drums. You will just be creating more work for yourself later.

I struggle with these vids..specifically with regards to hearing the difference between what he's demonstrating...so for example at 45.50 when he's pointing out the phase issues with the two kicks..I just can't hear the difference! so 1..are my ears just useless 2 are the headphones I'm listening on just not good enough to present the difference 3 it's such a subtle difference that my ears are just not 'tuned enough......' along with this kick phase issue I struggle also when he's showing the difference with adding the loop in over his live drumming..the 'air' he talks about being added with the addition of the loop i really struggle to hear..
@doerrjams5770
@doerrjams5770 5 лет назад
First thing could be headphones...or whatever listening environment you have. If it isn't good at reproducing accurate low-end, then it will be really hard to hear the differences in the low-end that happen from Eric's moves. Same deal with the top end, although average headphones usually do an okay job of reproducing high end. If it's a noisy headphone jack though, or you're in a louder environment, you may not be able to hear it. Finally, yes, sometimes it takes a more obvious 'Ah ha!' example to help your mind categorize what you heard. It's kind of like not being able to taste all the ingredients in a soup until someone has you taste all of them individually, then, the next time you take a sip, you can start to pin point the individual spices and stuff. I could hear all but one of the things Eric was doing in this video (one of the low end moves with time aligning wasn't super obvious to me), but I'm just listening on my regular headphone jack. I might be able to hear it on my nearfields in my studio. Then again, maybe not. Eric is kind of in a different league :-) (Which is why we're watching his videos).

I don't use Protools enough to know this so I ask instead: Can you make a tempo map out of a midi track? If so, how about when recording the drums also record the midi triggers? That way you should (?) have perfect triggers already to render a tempo map? The hihats... I didn't really get that, you kept the loop's swinged hihat notes unquantized to your live hihat? Really nice sound of the live drums/mixed drums you got there. Only thing I'm not as keen on is the 450 sampl. delayed kick, making it a bit flabby. But still sounds nice as a whole. Have you tried Regroover? Maybe would be a good partner for the mixing process separating the drum loop into separate channels. Or in this case the OH track for that snare processing.

Excellent video! Just wondering if you'd still choose Beat Detective over Logic's algorithms in 2020? I remember Logic being glitchy and laggy back in 2014, but imho they improved a lot, so I no longer hear artefacts when editing in Logic vs. Pro Tools. What's your opinion on that? Thanks :)

Very interesting technique, Eric! Do you follow any method for finding the loops that you want? In this case you were playing the same drum part as the loop you wanted to use in the mix, but what if you couldn't find a loop where the kick-snare pattern matches the live part? Would you then make a "frankenstein" loop by splicing one that's similar? Thanks.
@mrwev
@mrwev 3 года назад
Good Question! Yes I have had to Frankenstein a loop into playing a part that I wanted and then lock that to the live performance. You can get away with a lot when recreating a drum pattern if you have sections in the loop where where you can grab background ambience to fill in gaps of shorter hits that are getting moved. It's always a fun little puzzle trying to pull it off :)

Question: if I don't have a front of the kit kind of mic thats picking up the kick and snare well, what mic would you recommend using with beat detective to create the tempo map?
@mrwev
@mrwev 5 лет назад
Typically I will use whatever mics are closest to the drums... kick, snare, tom mics or will often have this mic I call the K/S mic that pics up both the kick and snare close up. Close mics are really the best choice for beat detecting.

Good Question!! I like to leave the crossfades off until just before I mix. If I need to change anything it is much easier without a bunch fades all over everything. I turn on the preference for a global 1ms fade in/out so I dont hear clicks and pops while working on tracking and editing.
