In this video I show how I make the side bending jigs for building an acoustic guitar. The first one is for actual side bending and the second one is for working with the sides after they're already bent.

My dad used to build furniture and bent wood into some incredible shapes using laminates, with no spring back or movement once bent. I applied the same logic to the sides, by using two to three thinner pieces glued and clamped into the mold, you end up with very stable sides that are much less prone to cracking. You also end up with a consistent shape on every guitar. I noticed with a larrivee I own the shape is slightly of, one issue with conventional side bending its not always accurate

Very nice!! Some day when I have space, I'll be looking at this vid to make a guitar. Should have made a dreadnought body instead of the same one. :-)

I used laminate sides, using two or three thinner pieces, glued and clamped into the form. I was surprised at the simplicity of this method.This prevents spring back and the sides are more stable and therefore less prone to cracking due to humidity or clumsiness

Well..., I didn't forget to hit subscribe ... I'm looking for this kind of stuff since maybe some weeks ago, but only found some well extended about spanish guitar, and others very abridged about acoustic ones. 600 bucks tends to scare me, for the DIYish it's lovely but I think it has to be glued to some realistic issues, one of them for me it's not to become a guitar luthier nor a craftman but to work and entertain ending up with a nice sounding guitar ..., and for that money at best or 400 more bucks at worst, would have a great sounding moreless "cheap" Martin guitar. I 🤞 hope already have some machinery in my ... "shop"? to reduce that figures. But, moreless, I have time, so I'll be looking to sharp the pen of that $ 600 budget. We'll see ... Greetings from Argentina PD: said those above, nevertheless your vids seems likely to be a treasure 👏👏👏.

Great video. Thanks for posting this. I am building your bending jig to use with the LMI OM kit. I had a quick question: in your video you later mention that you cut the bending jig using the plans as a template..."to the inside line." I just finished cutting all my pieces for the bending form, but I cut them to the outside line using the plans as a template. Do you see any particular reason this would cause me some problem when later using the other form in the following step? Thanks.

When cutting the shape, cannot you not use both pieces? The inner piece for the bending mold and the outer piece for the other mold?

if you cut to the inside of the line for frame mold can you use the cut offs for bending mold? Is that possible?
@chrisschilling8729

Seems like you could have used the offcuts from the outside jig for the inside forms.

Am I wrong to laminate 6 layers thick with no glue in the middle then saw it all at once? Butterfly the female mold at 3 layers and use the middle at 4- 6 layers for the bending form?

If you haven't got a heat matt could you do the bending process with a heat gun?
@tomhasoleary6080
@tomhasoleary6080 5 лет назад
tom rielly I recently did this by soaking the wood in a bathtub over night and then immediately began to bend it using a heat gun and it’s definitely more difficult but it works

Yeah - here's a link to some info about them www.lmii.com/products/tools-services/bending/heating/heating-blankets. I got mine from China on amazon for a lot less than what lmii sells them for. I think I spent like $50

I'm guessing that $2000 total cost estimate you mentioned in the first episode would be for someone who already has a fairly well equipped shop to begin with, no? Clamps alone are maybe $500, not to mention the various power tools needed. Great series nonetheless!
@AGuyDoingStuffAdam
@AGuyDoingStuffAdam 6 лет назад
Andrew Walsh yeah good point I had a pretty good set up to begin with. If somebody is starting from scratch it would be a lot more expensive. Also - I wouldn’t really recommend starting a shop from nothing and having a guitar being your first project.
