Thank you for posting this video. I'm just beginning and also like to make as many of the tools I'm going to use too. I like how you went through making the plyers. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
I'm a on and off amature silversmith, as in I played with it in High school then again about the turn of the century but now I'm older and disabled so I'm back again, for the hobby relaxes me. Thank you for the fun of the chain I've always made my own even if the machine made at times were cheaper and of course faster. I'm a new scribe to your channel. Once again I thank you.
I am not a jeweler by trade, I am a master plumber. We use the same type of angles and soldering tools in brazing and welding of pipes and fittings. Jewelery is smaller and finer, the results can be as pleasing. My parents placed a basement under their house after the home was built. The main sewer pipe was replaced with copper pipe and bronze fittings. It was brazed and polished to a high luster and lacquered to keep the shine. Its still just as shiny as the day I installed it. I made a chain using your video's soldering each link with sterling soldering paste and sterling wire. I made a 122 gram foxtail necklace. Its beautiful and I love wearing it. I want to thank you for your informative video's!!
Yeah, just about the same tools with a bit of size difference. Thank you for the feedback. I'm very happy that you enjoy them and get some projects made! 😊
Just came across your videos. I like the style. And I am a great fan of fuddling with making your own tools or modifying those from the local hardware shop. And true, the experimentation is half the fun. Ha' en god weekend. Kofod, Borneo
I agree with Lisa! I learned so much...I try.....try to make chains but no-where ur caliber...I mean whoah he makes his own tools! Gr8 job and video. Oh I like the songs too.
Wow! It's fascinating to see you make the links from wire you've drawn yourself (I think "drawn" is correct terminology?) and then put together into a chain. You're very skilled. I don't have enough patience for chainmaille but I do enjoy watching the tutorials and enjoy making wire wrap jewelry. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
I love your home made draw plate crank system you made! I’ve been thinking of making one myself but was probably way overthinking and over engineering what I really need. Thanks for the inspiration!
Shaping Silver - I don't know many link patterns, I have enjoyed making spiral chainmaille and others but making "proper" chains like this is something else. I will use the twist technique to attempt a simple (curb?) chain I like a chain that twists but I tend to wear a flat link. I'm sorry I haven't got the correct names/ descriptions. A bog standard simple chain that isn't just putting jump rings together?
@@ShapingSilver It's my job, I started it's been a while I succeeded, but thanks to you I understand things better, the braiding bracelet you posted I really managed to do it thank you very much
Thank you for your very interesting videos. Do you know a palmier chain? It looks like it is braided but not flat rather round. It is a variation on the foxtail or wheat chain?
Thank you. 😊 There are a few classics in Alan's book "Professional jewellery making" (curb, anchor, fox, rope...) and I like "Classical Loop-in-Loop Chains". I hope that helps.
Great video. I've never seen this chain before. I haven't done much chain-making, so sorry if questions are kindergarten level. Do you have to draw your wire, or can you just buy the right size and amount? What does "Draw to 2.9 x 1,65 oval" mean? Maybe it's supposed to be 1.65; but, I still don't know what it means. Lastly, It looks like you're having trouble bending these wires- I wonder, if that's true, if I'll be able to bend them. I already have weaker hands after carpal tunnel surgery on both. Thanks for any help you can give. This is a lovely chain and I'd like to give it a go.
Jessie Slaten 2.9 mm on one side and 1.65 mm on the other. I always draw my own wire, but I think you would be able to buy a similar oval wire. We use comma as decimal point in Denmark, so a typing error. It (the thin version) is not hard to twist, but it must be fairly accurate. Good luck with it.
Thank you. I've got it now. If you don't mind, could you tell me what you're using to keep the wire straight when making jumprings? Thanks again for a well done tutorial.
Jessie Slaten just two pieces of wood. You can file a fitting grove and put them in a vise if you are having trouble holding them by hand. Thank you again.

Shotdocta, if you don't use the paper the silver wire will grip the mandrel and you will be unable to get it off. Wire wrapped on a round rod will just open up, that is not the case with an oval one. By using the paper you will create space and be able to aneal the wire by heating so you can get the coil off.
Shotdocta as far as I rember, the Franco chain is two curb chains soldered together on top of each other. I'll have a look when I get my books unpacked.
Depends on where you are. Rio grande is my best guess if you are in the US. There are a number of places in Europe. Or you could make them yourself. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing! Just one question: Did you draw an oval shape wire or my eyes are going bad?Any ways, it looks beautiful with a perfect solder joint! :) Denise.
Great video .but I think next time if you kindly spare us de mailing of de wire I think every jeweller can figure that out to save more time for de main work it self
Thank you. It's hard to please everyone and that is what RU-vid is. I have subscribers who are masters have been teaching the subject for years, people just starting out and people who will never make a piece in thier life, but just want a story and see metal melt... I hope you got what you came for and thanks for watching! :-)
I mostly make silver items of .999, 925 or 826 silver, which I buy as scrap. Mostly old cutlery that you can get from places that sell used silver items. Like "S&M coins and collectables" in CA. Larger pieces of sheet or wire I get from "Dansk ædelmetal", but you can get it form many places, like Riorande.com if you live in the US.
Una pregunta más el mandril donde lo volteas nada más es como media caña ,o está rebajado de los dos lados , gracias por su repuesta o puedes mandar una foto del mandril a pgmukul@ gmail.com gracias de antemano
