Great to have a no nonsense - straight forward video. I'm constantly making doors/gates and so having a video breakdown the steps is brilliant. Thank you 👍
Great comment Kevin. I guess you're right in what you say mate. In this, 'simple', gate you have the sort of core elements of carpentry. Measuring, cutting, joining and fitting. And also applying an understanding of the timbers characteristics like swelling/shrinking as well as how to prevent gravity from affecting its shape. AND, it proves that even a simply constructed gate still bring job satisfaction.😎 Really great comment mate.👍 Have a nice weekend.
Lovely that mate, your my new fav channel lol. Like the bevel to shed water of the cross members, I also like to put a horizontal cap on the top and bottom of my gates, as we know the rot always starts at the top and bottom through the end grain wicking water, I or the customer can easily pop the caps off and replace down the road, and save replacing whole boards. Cheers for another very enjoyable vid.
You wouldn’t go anywhere without that kneeling mat . It’s been in all your videos . Don’t blame ya . Knee pads with straps are rubbish . Cheers pal good vid
Hi there Terry. Its a bit like my ear defenders as well. I just cant kneel down without it.😀 I have had all sorts of problems with my knees resulting in countless surgeries over the years, and do suffer with bad arthritis in them both now, so have to do all I can to keep the pain levels down.😆 Thanks for your great comment and for watching.👍
Nice job, one of my friends has giving up working as a carpenter, all he does is side gates now he's really doing well at it has it down to 40 min a gate, he makes loads at home and cuts to suit
Lovely gate mate I am doing the same job next week with some close boarded fencing, like you say the work is varied but I like it that way, that's one big shadow you cast there big man 👍 have a great weekend and keep the great content comming 😊
Hi Rob. Thanks for your great comment.🤩 I know that not all carpenters work can be varied if you're, say working on big house building developments, but even when we do the same job again and again, its usually on a new site/job in a different area meeting new people.😎 Cheers again and have a nice weekend.👍
Excellent video as always ,nice little tip on angling the braces to stop water settling on the tops,i always do the same ,had to giggle at the hinges they supplied you with lol.
Hi Simon. I know putting the chamfer/angle on top of the cross braces is probably unnecessary, but it makes it feel a little bit more, 'joinery like', than just a square edge.🤩 You know what I thought as soon as I saw those tiny hinges.🤬🤠. Thanks for your nice comment and hope you have a nice weekend.👍
Great job done on the gate del hope the builder gets you the hook and band hinges 450mm long ones or longer t hinges would be the job as you know that yourself nice weather to be outside working to 😀
Hi chip o wood. I know they look like Bambis legs, but they are just the right angle to support a lot of weight but also wide enough apart to be stable. I've had 15 sheets of plasterboard on them which is about 300kgs!!!!. I've had this pair around 20 years and they're still spot on.😎 Thanks for your comment and have a nice weekend.👍
Defo. The fact its screwed rather than nailed will make it last longer. I've seen no end of production line ones with the movement of the wood pulling the pins out they put in
Nice one mate, just wondered why you drilled holes for the screws first instead of just screwing straight through? Dont think those boards would split/crack at all.. Cheers
Hi FR🖐I'm not worried about the boards splitting when pre-drilling for the screws, more than the screws tent to 'jack' the boards away from each other rather than being pulled down nice and tight👊Some people don't counter drill and just bury the heads until the boards are tight, but I think it's a bit rough😬Cheers Del
Hi Mark. I've done gates like this without the diagonal brace and it the gates have been fine.😎 (maybe dropped a tad over time, but no issues with twisting).👍 Cheers.
Hi there🖐Although the timber will shrink and swell with the seasons, as you suggest, I probably make the gate 20mm smaller than the opening👍Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers
Excellent video, thinking of having a go myself. Could you tell the size of the wood you fixed to the wall and what size screws you would use to fix the panels. Cheers
Hi Jack. Given that the timber used to make the gates will generally shrink back more than it will swell, I aim for about a 5mm gap all round. However, I really wouldn't get to hung up this gap as it will do its own thing anyway. The key is to have it big enough so that it doesn't bind.😎 Thanks for your comment.👍
Hi Kallum. Don't sweat it mate. I did some gates the same as this on my own house without diagonal braces and the were fine apart from a tiny bit of drop. They've been on for 15 years now.😎 Cheers.
What were the fixings you hammered home to the brick? Sorry but what the mortice cut for? Also how did you align the wall fixing? When aligning for the boards for the gate who do you managed for expansion and contraction?
Hi Mark🖐The hammer fixings are called Express Nail👊I just used a level to plumb the gate post before I fixed it, and I fix the verticle boards tight to each other, as they always shrink from new, rather than expand👍Cheers Del
Hi Me to you.🖐 Its a job that doesn't need to be made complicated, and you're right, that you can knock em out pretty quick on site.😎 Thanks for your comment and have a nice weekend.👍
Hi there. They are Express Nail Anchors. Just drill an 8mm hole and hammer them it. First time Id used them and they held the timber very tight to the wall.😎 (got to get them in the right place though as they don't come out!!)😵 Cheers.
@@thetallcarpenter Many thanks for the info Del, and will look into buying one of those as I can see its great for that kind of timber sizing. Must say that I am really impressed with the level of professional workmanship you show and the way you explain it, also judging by the site, I can see that the building trades on it actually care about the quality of the builds..👍 Have a good evening, and thanks once again..👍🙂
I don't know what they were Ian.😬 The builder gave them to me and said, 'try these'.😜 I just drilled an 8mm hole straight through the timber and into the brickwork and hammered them in. They worked a treat actually.😎 Cheers.
Hi Lee. Yes, it is very tedious when you get covered in dust from the 680🤬. BUT, I find it quite useful for doing cuts against the square when you're in a more behind position. (oo,er!). I used them both as one can stay set to an angle and one set square.😎 Thanks for your comment. (I'm planning a video on blade left/right saws)👍
@@thetallcarpenter It came to my attention as the 680 of mine is in the utility room awaiting a place on marketplace having bought the 660 a month or 2 back. I do miss the line of sight to the blade of the lefty tho. ;)
Hi Kallum. Its not a disaster if you glued them, but Peter is right that too much glue will not allow the timber to shrink and swell and could cause splitting.👊
Nice work. Would much prefer the sound of those sweet Teal tools, than that insipid background music, juss sayin. Thumbs up and am a Subscriber. Stay safe and Healthy! 👍👍👍😁✌🏻🇺🇸
Hi George. And great to have you watching from the USA 🇺🇸😀. I would love to just edit the footage to be normal speed but then this video would have been 52 minutes long. Speeded up tools sound rubbish so I just put music over it. I'm learning all the time how to best produce my videos and it's a balance between how long to make them, (well how short actually), and getting in enough footage so everyone can follow what I'm doing. I appreciate you watching and your feedback.🤩 Cheers.
@@thetallcarpenter Thanks for the nice reply! Yeah, Idiot me, never even crossed my Dino brain about the fast fwd, and the sound being off! Duh! But maybe turn down the attenuation on the background music, if possible, as it comes through loud, and I keep my volume up so as not to miss your narrative, which I thoroughly enjoy! 😁👍👏🏻☺️ Us picky Yankess over here! 🙄😂 Thanks and stay safe and Healthy Mate! 👍😁✌🏻
@@georgedavall9449 Hi George. Thanks so much for your super constructive input about my videos. I honestly am a complete dinosaur with most computer type stuff and this is all a VERY steep learning curve for me. I'm trying hard to get the volume right on my videos, and am learning how to chop clips up and reduce the sound on that particular part. I'm only editing on the software that came preloaded on my laptop, but feel like I am making improvements with every video I post.😎 I've got a soft spot for Americans and have some great friends spread across your great nation. Thanks again.🤩 Cheers.
@@thetallcarpenter You’re Very Welcome! I will try to offer up support as much as I can. I promise to send compliments your way as well. 😁😂 Nice sentiments, and yes, there are good people over here. I think most all the World has been struggling with getting out from under this damn pandemic!? But we have too much strife over here right now. Hopefully better days ahead up there somewhere?! You take care my friend. You’re considered mine already! 🤗🙏👏🏻👍😁✌🏻🇬🇧🇺🇸
