not too many in depth videos of the 707. this may not be crazy in depth but non the less its very detailed given the time frame and well put together. good job
Your videos, music, and teaching style are excellent Gabe. I really enjoy learning from you! I love my circuit tracks and I will most definitely purchase more cool chit based on your reviews. Thanks dude, keep jamming for us!!! 😁🤙
Nice video! I dig the synth sounds you're sculpting here. Are there any elements of the workflow on the 707 that you prefer over the MPC One? I like the immediacy of my 707 and the less DAW like nature of it, but I sometimes wonder I'd be better suited to an MPC. Could just be the groovebox grass is greener on the other side though. Thanks for all the quality content as always!
Thanks! The main thing I prefer on the 707 is the live jamming aspect (clip/scene launching, dedicated knobs for certain parameters, etc). And I like to go out of my way to use the Zencore synth engine. The MPC One is definitely more DAWlike but it's still hands-on enough for me and I usually find I'm faster with it.
@@openmike04 the 707 almost gives me buyer's remorse for the MPC, but it's sooo good to be able to use as a recording hub for my external synths. I almost went for an mc101 but Id probably get frustrated with the lack of sound design. but FUCK the 707 sounds good and seems to take less work to get sounds going. All my mpc projects start from scratch, finding new drums, making instruments, it's powerful but not fast for me.
@@aethervagrant244 Great points. I haven't put together an external synth setup yet but I'm glad to know it will work well for that. I considered the 101 too, but I thought it would be too menu-divey and the 4 tracks a bit limiting. I love its portability though. I think the speed of getting sounds going on the 707 is a good point. I find it very quick to grab and start something and spend less time in the searching for the initial sounds.
Hey Gabe, tou ever used the new Fantom sequencers? They seem the same as the mc’s. Can you confirm this? I’m looking for a new box or keyboard for inspiration away from the pc. I’ve always had workstation keyboards but never had a groovebox like the mc’s or mpc so i’m kinda of in doubt of what to get cause i never had hands on experience with these boxes.
Does this thing have a song mode? My problem with all these boxes is that virtually ALL the (otherwise fine) music dudes are showing on videos is a evolving but repetitive pattern with no song structure. Even the simplest song would need some 4 beats bars, some 8 beats ones, some transitions lasting 2 beats, etc.
Is there a video of u creating live on the 707 while the music is going? And adding drums and layers like a live set from scratch? Or do u know where i can find a video like that? I'm every day more convinced of buying one of that but is not really cheap and i just wanna see the potential of the mc
Hey Gabe or ANYONE. QUESTION? Just got my MC 707. Is there a way to only have the METRONOME CLICK on During recording only? It counts down 4 bars but then it has not "Click" per each bar during recording. I know if I hit SHIFT/TEMPO I can turn ON the METRONOME but then it plays thru the Recording and Playback. Is there a way for the "CLICK" ONLY DURING RECORDING? I have been asking for nearly a week on YT. Version 1.82
Hey gabe, I’ve had the mc101 for a while and I’m thinking to upgrade (without selling it, the mc101 is the perfect couch companion) not sure wether to pull the trigger on the 707 or the mpc 1. What do you think? Is the 707 still worth it if I’m keeping the 101? Will the mpc open a new world for me? Not used to work with samples so I’m not sure, it looks like a good center piece for a home studio but then again, a 101 on steroids is really appealing too🤔 Anyway thanks for another awsome video👌🏼
It's hard to say without knowing how you like to work, but if you want a DAW in a box and want to get into more sample based stuff, the MPC is a good bet. If you want to do more live jamming and think having basically an MC-101 with full sound engine access and more tracks, the MC-707 is the obvious choice. Hopefully that at least helps narrow it down.
That's a really hard choice, because I'm really enjoying the 707 lately for making full jams (videos on that soonish). I still think I'd choose the 101 though, mainly because of the portability.
@@GabeMillerMusic I love my 101 and use it a lot but I am bad at making good full songs on it, I create good lopps and some nice sounds but nothing more, I would think the circuit or the Maschine makes it a lot easier to create a full good song?
@@magnuseriksson8081 speaking as a guilty G.A.S sufferer I would say that's a dangerous thought to have...lol I'm in a similar situation with the 101 but just looking at Gabe's linked 101 synth wave video I can honestly say it's a case of user end limitation... I tell myself that once I can achieve even close to a level of what Gabe does on that linked video with the 101 then there's no reason to need the 707 or a similar unit like the ones you mentioned (well maybe not the circuit since I believe it to be less powerful than a 101). Sure Gabe has a musical background that I lack. But these are loop based machines...I would think half the production is creating good loops as you stated and the other half tweaking and performing them live. To create what would essentially become a full track?🤷🏻♂️
@@BendApparatus You are so right but I have found it being easier to create a good song on units with an easier and better song mode like the Mv1 or a daw of course.
@@magnuseriksson8081 I will agree based on ignorance...lol because I've used VERY few song modes in any device. In fact only on the Volca sample which...well... it's laughable. As it basically allows you to lay out your patterns in sequence and then proceeds to completely cut you off from tweaking them in any way besides simple sequencer fx like active step and step jump (basically stutter and timing). So far I'm focusing on using the 101's clip mode to expand and alter my drum loops and bass lines. My problem is that without any background in music, melodies are nearly impossible to create. And I can't seem to figure out how to effectively use an(any) arpeggiator to help...🤷🏻♂️ The struggle is real...lol
What's your opinion on Roland's drum presets? Every time I hear them, no matter how good the rest of the song is, I feel like something's missing that the presets on stuff like the MPC or Circuit have, but I can't put my finger on what it is.
I like them for synthwave, but other than that, I pretty much only use custom samples these days. I don't really worry about the quality of drum presets on devices where you can load your own samples because I'm probably going to just jump straight to using my own sounds.
I hated mine and sold it, not because it never sounded good, but it took all my attention and I did not want this to be my main focus. Menu diving was a PITA.
Hearing how they implement it, I can understand why you didn't use "analog feel" with the sounds where you didn't... and I usually LOVE pitchmod, even on piano. But this one doesn't sound as musical as, say, a Moog sample and hold routed to pitch does.
@@GabeMillerMusic thanks, but are you limited to one sound per beat or can you have, for example, a kick and clap on the same beat on the same track? Thanks, your channel is really great
Thanks! Given the differences in sound, I probably would have come up with something fairly different sounding on the Electribe... In my experience it sounds less clean and polished and I've gotten my best results from it by leaning into that.
The same questions over and over again, I know, but if. you have to pick one hardware that you with ease can create songs with and grow with, which one would you pick? I always think that I should go to the Maschine but I have learnt that I spend more time on things if it is portable, so I use the 101 a lot but I am not happy with the results, much better with the Mv1, and I think having the 101 and 707 makes sense as you can use all your knowledge on both units? But I do like the Maschine for some reason, I want this unit that I fall in love with and learn to use so very well. Sometimes I feel I should just focus on getting to know Logic like a king.
I started with a Novation Circuit (the very first one) and fell in love with it. It was much more fun than starting my computer and tinker with Ableton live (even though it's a wonderful DAW for music production, mixing and mastering) to create things from scratch. I own a 101 and a 707 and though I love them, they aren't that easy to use outside of basic use cases. I'd say, if you're into Roland sound, they are the best but do remember that there is a steep learning curve involved. The 101 is pretty limited but it's portability and battery supports makes it a wonderful fit for traveling beat maker. The 707 is richer with its 8 tracks but it's not that portable and needs a power supply. I heard good things about the Maschine+ though it's not that complete against its Maschine mk3 sister. It's portable, and its touch screen is much more intuitive than Roland MCs gear. If you got the money, I'm pretty sure this might be all you need for your creations. Like you said, the alternative is a computer with a software but it's really not the same as tweaking buttons on a real device that is more limited but where the limitations forces you to be creative. I'd say, if you invest in software, you've got the more freedom but I'd suggest investing in some controllers too to get your hands on real controls. The mouse isn't really fun to play with in real time. Whichever path you choose, don't fall into the trap of always looking for new gear and use what you own to the death.^^
@@flashjaysan1 Thanks a lot, I go the Maschine Plus, love it so far and its the best workflow I have tried so far on a hardware device, I might get an iPad for music production later to be able to me more portable too, I really want to learn my Maschine really well as it feels worth the effort and the pads are amazing. Again, nothing really beats a good DAW though bout I love good pads and all the handson controls. I wish Maschine focused on a a great integration with Logic Pro, that would be a dream setup for studio work for me.
@@m-stat9 That's what I thought... I love making sounds on 707, it's sounds great no matter what you do, and two mod matrix slots... Man, I'm sold, I love my 707
@@m-stat9 I#ve considered and stil am I suppose the Akai's both force and live, I just have a thing with touchscreens :D Just love that zencore synthsound though..
