Making, Tangerine Dream tutorial & essence of Ricochet, Cherokee, Rubycon & Phaedra

Half a Century Ago! - I was tinkering around with this rig the other day and literally stumbled into the opening sequence on Ricochet part two and thought could I do soundalkes of some of my fave early TD albums. I don't like doing covers on this channel so, stuck to recreating the essence of those tracks (and rushed them for you, so no drawn out intros!). Using this impressive looking but limited budget gear I take you into building the key sequences or two from scratch and the top lines and pads. For me it is more of a testament to the fact they were making this complex (or not depending on your musical age) music 50 years ago!
The chapters break the video into the 'Making of' an excerpt of each work and then a 'Mini Performance' called 'Essences' - putting it into practise. Ricochet is the longer of the performances and the other three only 2-4 mins. Rubycon and Phaedra are less than perfect as I was rushing those a little, but you can still hear the essence especially with the phased solina.
Technically I explain how things are working in the video and you can go see this rig over a modular grid here - www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/v...
And if you like this sort of 'track recreation' content please say, oh and also support me on Bandcamp for my original works! - garyphayes.bandcamp.com/

Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. As a huge fan of early TD who's just started dipping their toes into modular synth this is just an awesome tutorial. I'm going to be re-watching (and re-watching) :)

You're very welcome Kathryn - yes this rig is the bare bones of achieving that sound for sure but hopefully you can see it is more about real time performance than a room full of equipment! Have fun!

Absolutely brilliant Gary, thanks so much for doing this. Like many in the comments below or above, I grew up listening to TD about the time Punk started here...and those albums Phaedra, Rubycon, Ricochet and Stratosfear (and Green Desert) made such an impression on me that's lasted 50 years. I lost touch with them after Cyclone really, appreciate they had to grow and develop as a band but they lost me with the change in direction. I recently got a Roland Aira S1 and programmed 'Rubycon' into that but in the last few days bought a 960/962 and a Model D to go full Franke :) Regards from not so sunny Cambs.

Thanks Andrew - yes we are lucky to get the 960 so cheap so we can create TD sounding vibes. And yes indeed full CF - must have been great in the day to be rockin those sequences out at mega watts!

Just found your channel; I'm not any sort of musician, more of a "hobbyist" or "experimenter", but have listened to TD since the mid-70s, with Phaedra, Rubycon, Richochet being some of my favorites. -I don't have Cherokee Lane, unless possibly on vinyl, but no turntable here for ages, and all my vinyl has been in boxes for decades. Although I built a PAIA Gnome micro-synthesizer back in the late 70s, along with their Oz mini-organ, I sold those on ebay decades ago but going on two years ago I started buying synths and note that I have several of the modules/synths you have there, so hoping I can learn a bit here. Excellent video, along with one other channel I watch, you've nailed the sound and spirit of TD perfectly! I see from another comment you're an astrophotographer too - amateur photographer/astrophotographer here and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the weather here in NY state cooperates on Monday so that I may stand in the shadow of the Moon again - I was in Nashville in 2017 and was able to photograph that eclipse. Glad I found your channel!

Thanks for the compliment, TD and JMJ and Oldfield and others I grew up playing alongside, so easy to emulate them here after decades! Yes been a pro Landscape photographer for 12 years now in the mountains near Sydney, astrophotography a side car to that - envious of you getting the eclipse, but I really do deep sky rather than these little rocks near us :) Glad you can learn something from the video too!

Awesome! I'm a big fan of these 70s TD albums and it is nice to see how you show the essentials for creating that sound. I'm not going the modular way... only for this kind of sequencing I like to have a basic setup. So I think of getting the Behringer 960, but like to know what else I do need if I want to do the ratcheting too? Thanks for the good vibes :-)
@GaryHayes
@GaryHayes 2 месяца назад
Glad you enjoyed it DT - the main element doing ratcheting this was is a clcok divider with a rate CV in. I use the cheap 2HP Div (which is two of them in one 2HP unit), and as I explained in the video the bottom 2 rows of the 960 send 'rate' changes to the clock div. Obivously you need a main clock and then the sequencer gates into the synth pitch, but the gates come via the Div and into the envelopes usually

Very nice! Big fan of TD of that aera here. Just wondering which modules you used for the ratcheting?
@GaryHayes
@GaryHayes 2 месяца назад
Thanks Martin - I sort of go over the ratchet voltages from the 960 at 29:30 or so ... but they feed the simple 2HP div rate module which has two clocks and a rate CV input, so when the temporary higher CV comes from the 960 row step, the rate temporarily jumps to 2/3/4 etc X the basic gate hitting the filter/vca fixed rate ... hope that makes sense - I explain it in other videos too
@MartinLueders
@MartinLueders 2 месяца назад
@@GaryHayes Thanks a lot. I was wondering whether you used a clock divider (multiplier) or the old-style LFO method. From the cleanliness of the ratcheting I already suspected you had some sort of clock divider.
