Making the Pocket 6K a REAL Cinema Camera | Shoulder Rig

I take the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k and transform it into a real cinema camera by adding some features that it’s missing. In the end, we have a shoulder rig that is an absolute beast for filmmaking. To make the BMPCC4k/6k operate like a real cinema camera, we had to add a v mount battery for better battery life, a brighter monitor, a matte box and variable ND filter, wireless follow focus and more!

Nice rig ! The only thing that I always find missing in rigs similar to yours (I got something similar for me) is somehow a middle/center handle between the two existing ones. I think that the camera would be much more stabilized if while focusing with the left hand the right hand to hold instead a middle handle instead of the right one... I noticed that in my shots and I wished in many cases to have been able to salvage a little bit 'too shaky' footage.

Fantastic content. I can’t decide whether whether to go with Blue Kondor or SmallRig when I eventually get my Pocket4K. Armando Ferreira’s video on his Blue Kondor rig was pretty enticing. Tilta is a bit too expensive and I know SmallRig has the most options when it’s comes to modularity, which is a huge plus.
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 года назад
SunDevilThor thanks! Yeah, Armando’s vid on the Kondor is great, I just don’t think they have as many parts yet. All the Tilta parts are too expensive for me personally, that’s why I go SmallRig. And SmallRig is so incredibly modular, and I can use the parts between all my rigs and evolve with each cam.

Hi! Thanks for the tip below about large camera bags! Internal ND is very recent feature on 'cinema' cameras in the last 7 years or so and is not standard or even used on high end cameras where there is a AC. I think sometimes narrative shooting gets mixed up with documentary (or wedding) productions where you have to react fast to get the shot. We've all considered or bought the BMPCC because of low cost raw which IMO compensates for things like internal NDs. You could also save money by having a lens mounted ND filter on all the time and using one of the programmable buttons to quickly switch from INT to EXT settings.
@chadwin
@chadwin 3 года назад
Very well said. Yeah, there aren't internal ND's on many of the ARRI and RED cameras. However, I know many of the cine line up of cameras are starting to add them. But you're totally right, built in VND is much more common for documentary filmmaking where things are extreme run and gun. The BMPCC lineup are great cameras and easy to add external ND to, so it's worth the trade off for many of their benefits like you said.

I have the Rokinon Cine Ds set of 6 lenses. Not a huge fan of the wider options but perhaps I need more time in the field with them. Do you have any links to projects you've shot with the 24mm? Also, how is latency with a wireless follow focus? I have the same monitor but there is a delay coming out of the P4K out the gate. Is it pretty terrible with the added transmitter/receiver mixed into the equation?
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 года назад
Buddy FX nice, I actually really like the Cine DS lens set. I shoot on the 24mm all of the time, but not exclusively just one lens for one project. Trying to think of something I can share besides client work. This vid has example shots that were on the 24mm ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VjfU_B6HelE.html I haven’t actually had any issues with the BM5 monitor giving me a major delay out of the cam. Have you done all the most recent firmware updates? The transmitter will always add some delay, but it’s only a fraction of a second for me.

StephenPDavis doing a lens swap isn’t too bad actually. You just have to care of off the clamp for the mattebox and put it on the next lens. Because I’m using all rokinon cine ds lenses, the focus teeth are all in the same place so I don’t have to adjust the focus motor position at all

I'm afraid, you can get problems with your vision if you look at your monitor at this small distance. If you're using a regular camera viewfinder, it's not an issue, because you can adjust its optics to keep your eyes accommodated to infinity, which is most suitable for normal vision. It could be a sign of myopia if you feel comfortable looking at your monitor at this distance. Unfortunately, I cannot see enough proper solutions to this problem on the market. What do you think about it?

[Hi there, director with two years experience here of camera op here. I do all my rigging and shoot a lot of of handheld and shoulder mounted stuff.] I'm going to say what I don't like in this video because getting an imperfect rig is going to make you miserable, and you'll tire quickly, and you won't like the end result. This is all said because I, myself, have had the same issues, and comes from a place of sharing =) at 14:25, when he actually uses the rig is when you can see all the problems manifest. So, a quick list : - This rig is hella unbalanced. All your weight is distributed towards the front, except for the V-Mount which isn't nearly enough far back to actually counterbalance. You usally want your camera body to be over your shoulder, centerweighted, as your lens + monitor and your V-Lock/gold mount usually balance themselves out. All that weight will be on your arms. which brings us to... - Your handles are way too short or way too long. You can either go the very hard action "mattebox grabbing" stye (Michael Bay likes to shoot handheld like this for instance), SHane hurlbut talked about it in a video, in which case you would mount handles as close to the mattebox (on a properly balanced rig) OR the very smooth way and more confortable for the operator, with longer handles, allowing the arms to rest at a 90° angle, elbows resting along the ribs. Also, you need to set your handles so your wrist are straight, or you'll be miserable pretty quickly. You can see on the video his wrists are bended all weird, not a comfortable position, especially with all that weight. - I would recommend getting a beveled shoulder pad, which allows you to actually stand straight and have your camera leveled. You can see in the video he kinda lifts his shoulder and stands a bit weird to compensate. This gets tiring really quick. - Finally, that monitor is too close. In the video, you see he has to cramp his neck backwards. This also eats your ability to perform properly on a long day. And it's just unpleasant. Hope this helps ! A rig should be just more weight on your knees, and nothing else. That's why it's so important to fine tune yours =)

And when you wanna shot on a gimbal? You must dissamble every time or have another camera only for gimbal shots, thats'me fell crazy🤕
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 года назад
slashwars yeah, some disassembly is required to throw it on a gimbal, but not much actually. The camera has a QR plate so it just slides right off the rig, I unplug everything and throw it onto the gimbal. Only the top handle has to come off if it’s mounted
@elevenstars100
@elevenstars100 4 года назад

Did he call a CINEMA camera a DSLR, and then tile the video turn a CINEMA camera into a CINEMA camera. Whatever it's RU-vid, BTW a DSLR is a camera that has a mirror. This camera is a true Cinema camera that just happens to be shaped like a DSLR. That is why it suck for photos. It even says it in the name Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera 4/6K. But, clickbait I guess.
