Hi Charlotte. One product to look into in future is LVL or Laminated Veneer Lumber. Pound for pound Laminated wood is stronger than any other wood. Laminated wood is actually used in some older GA airplanes as structural material. It is available in big box hardware stores as sheet and as beams. It's well capable of carrying your weight in a small, trim stilt. Airplanes need to be light but strong.

LVL is great for simple projects. You should make friends with someone who does composite work, preferably in Aviation. I used to teach Advanced Composites at an A&P college, and I immediately thought "Carbon fiber would be awesome for those" even fiberglass that you can do at home would be really useful, use polystyrene foam as core and laminate fiberglass on with laminating epoxy. Many Rutan airplanes were built in garages this way. My students built clipboards out of foam core fiberglass that could support over 500 lbs. There are some great YT videos on home composites.

@@MissTwisteddd I would go with the multilayered wood, aluminium is nice but harder to work and if it fails it goes quick and silent, multilayered wood failing is loud and slow, you notice and have a chance to react, alu just bends/breaks/snaps Foam fiberglass is from an mechanical pov easy to work but to get it right you need a lot of experience with it and to get good results a lot of trial and error if doing something new, problem is in the details there. It does have more safety margin than alu though, it does not fail as quick.

Your drill has two settings, one for drilling holes. The other is for screws. The screw setting has a clutch that prevents you from snapping screws. Look on your drill for a switch that has a picture of a drill and one of a screw. The numbers that run around the shaft of the drill (shush) are your clutch settings. They allow a softer or harder screw (shush). This will help you out in the future.

@Astromechy

@@MissTwisteddd Pre-drilling the holes should also help with the torque required to set the screws. Typically, the drill bit should be approximately the diameter of the body/shank portion of the screw (that is, the part that doesn't include the screw helix that does the grippy stuff). There are charts available that should show corresponding pilot sizes for various screw sizes.
@Lily-gr1ct
@Lily-gr1ct 3 месяца назад
it also looked like she was using metal screws for a lot of it? I might be wrong but it looked like the thread and point of the screw was a metal one and at 15:38 she said "Sheet metal screw", which would be not the correct type for the job. That might be another reason for snapping, because they're tougher but less sharp than wood screws and don't have a point that will dig in quite as much But hey, you live and learn lol
@psgouros
@psgouros Месяц назад
Sheet metal screws work fine for wood, but you need to be a bit more careful about the pilot hole size. The root of the screw tends to be thicker than the one in a similar wood screw. So bigger drill bit when pre-drilling.

Prolly a bit late for you to see this, but a tip from someone whos made fursuits; When making your fur/fabric patterns, if its for both sides or going to be a mirrored pattern (such as legs!) You only need to tape/cut out one leg! 😁 itll save time and struggles with taping, while also giving you a perfect mirrored pattern so that the legs fit and look identical. This works for foam shapes, patterns, cuts, measurements, and so on. Basically, for example, tape up the left leg, draw your seam patterns, cut your template free, and then just flip the template pieces to get your pattern for your right leg. 😎 i hope that makes sense and helps! Your work is fantastic! Im so proud of you for pushing through and braving the struggle of long term tedious projects like that. I know it can get ROUGH, especially when the materials feel like theyre fighting back. lol but it looks amazing so far! So excited to see how you continue!

Something else I once saw someone mention is that it's best to make the pattern on your dominant side (right if right-handed, left if left-handed). This is more important for sleeves than pant legs, but regardless, your dominant side will always have just a little bit more muscle mass

drilling for screws : one step up in drill diameter for hard wood. add bar soap to the threads to help drive them in. Torque was set too high on the drill which broke the screws. If the shaft of the broken screw is above the wood, vice grips will probably allow you to twist the broken screw out! Good job! and looking forward to see the completed project!

Heya , seasoned Knitter here . Just a heads up on that purple scarf: get ‚mercerised’ ( Hah Matt Mercer-ised ) cotton yarn for that, if you want that shine-effect. As for learning to knit : the internet provides. you‘ll need the knit stitch and the purl stitch and a salvedged edge technique to learn. That would give you every technique you need for that scarf. Happy Crafting

Thank you so much! I also have a feeling I might want to try and do some cable-knit type stuff for the snake parts (I know I can get it looking 'raised' with just the knit vs purl but I think having the snakes come 'off' the scarf might be a cool effect!

Adding to this, there are 2 ways to hold your working yarn. Either the throwing method, holding the working yarn in your dominate. Or, the... Continental? They may have changed the term, where you hold the working yarn in your non dominate hand. I prefer the 2nd method because it keeps the yarn in a closer position with less moving. May be worth testing out both methods ^^

Outstanding project and video! Wood wise, plywood is pound for pound, plywood is stronger and dimensionally more stable than unprocessed wood, since it is laminated. Joining the pieces could become an issue since there is less material to grab into, but smaller screws along with glues or epoxies would work. Adam Savage was making a dinosaur costume (as one does), spent time at every step reducing weight wherever he could- removing material from non-supporting parts for lighten the overall part. I’d recommend his Dino-build video to glimpse his overall approach.

There's yet another less known hoof design: The custom made hoof boots (by Polymorphe, I think?) worn by Bianca Beauchamp for her old pony play photo shoots. At first glance they look very intimidating to wear (which is probably why nobody tried to copy them so far), but on a closer look they actually solve many common issues while maintaining a very delicate and natural look. The solid base is just a slightly curved (resin?) wedge ending in a hoof shape, which was turned into a bound knee-high boot with a thick sheet of latex and some cord. The slight backwards curve of the wedge base moves the hooves slightly backwards, which keeps the wearer's center of gravity still above the hooves without sacrificing the natural digitigrade look, so falling over backwards due to a lack of support under the heels is no longer a problem. The way the feet are placed within makes them look a bit like ballet boots with a less extreme angle, but this design actually exploits the natural wedge-like shape of a straight foot to spread the pressure to the entire foot and ankle, keeping the toes suspended above the hooves and away from the pressure - gravity pushes the feet further down the wedge-like base, but the feet's own wedge shape prevents them from sinking any deeper, which is supported by the sheets being tightly bound around the lower legs (unlike actual ballet boots, which intentionally place the toes so close to the ground that this whole approach just doesn't work). Judging from a picture with visible pressure marks it appears that quite a large part of the deflected pressure ends up at the front of the ankle, but that could also be misleading due to the creases of the latex at that point in particular - which could probably be improved by using thick leather instead, either way. In some old backstage video she confirmed and even demonstrated with a little dance that they are actually quite comfortable to wear and easy to move in - but she also earns a living by walking around in sky high heels all the time so I'm not sure how representative that statement actually is.

@letalissonus
@letalissonus Месяц назад
@@stevenkeeffe9137 It's kinda hard to avoid, pretty much all off-the-shelf hoof boots and many custom made ones available for purchase are straight up fetish gear (I thought the pony play and latex bits would already give away what kind of rabbit hole you'd get into here, lol). Dedicated cosplay manufacturers like Chaos Costumes are the exception rather than the rule with this one. I think you'd be surprised how much stuff used in cosplays is actually bought from adult online shops and stores, when looking for skimpy clothes to use as the base of a costume or simple leather accessories it's easy to end up in rather kinky corners.

What I LOVED about this video was the research portion and pointing out all the different ways people have created the legs in the past. I did a ton of this research a few years ago to make Freya from Final Fantasy 9, and at the time I didn't have a workshop to try everything out. But watching you discuss all the research you did to create your own version was just so satisfying. It's one of my favorite steps of the process and it's so nice to see you give these creators a little shout-out for all the work they put in so that creators nowadays have a great starting off point in making their own creations. TL:DR - I love the research portion of this video.

Great work! Two wood working tips to elimnate broken screws, split wood, and produce a stronger assembly: 1) Drill Pilot Holes according to your wood and screw. Look up the drill size in a table. In general: hard woods require larger pilot holes. 2) Use screws for Wood, Decks, Timber, or similar applications, not sheet metal, drywall, etc. Use construction screws (or structural screws for particularly important joints). They're more expensive but you're not buying many, and they're engineered to handle much more stress.

Not all screws are made the same, especially for wood, If your screws are snapping, invest in stronger screws. The same goes for drill bits. Vice grip pliers are a must for pesky broken screws. Love your channel. The build on this project is awesome(amazing).

I too have had difficulty keeping up with Campaign 3. I am more than a year behind. I recently found a RU-vid channel by the Pixelists with wonderful recaps- feels less like cheating watching a video than reading a summary for some reason! I then watch the live play for any parts that sounded particularly epic. I’m still behind, but now making progress.

You amaze me with how many different skills you can utilise to make something that looks so cool! I really admire the tenacity to stick with something you're finding difficult, especially when youre teaching yourself a new skill. I've always loved digitigrade (I agree that digigrade sounds WAY better 😅) shoes/costumes, they're so magical in bringing a character to life. I think I'd be a hazard to myself and all in my vicinity if I tried walking in the shoes, let alone stilts! I also am unable to walk in heels. You did an amazing job with this first iteration of legs and I look forward to seeing you polish them to the point you're happy.

I love this! What a goal! Couple of things that may help in future. First, the snapping screws: Check and ensure the screw heads and ensure you are using the correct one. This can sound obvious, but if you are using even a slightly incorrect fit it can snap the screws easily on rotation. It's most common on cross head and star. Also check and ensure the tourque is set high enough. Too low it will not put enough power, too high it's going to rip it and sheer off. Third - stay away from brass screws. Timber decking screws are very good for both longevity, non rusting and load bearing. Could also try lag bolts/screws. They will need a pilot hole first. Drill bits, you need HSS Black oxide-coated bits. They are the best. With wood. I agree with the LVL, its cheaper but also comparable to hardwoods for load bearing.

For the screw issues, I recommend deck screws. They're a bit tougher, and most of them have a better grip than regular wood screws.

One thing that will help with a circular saw is to have a few of the same thickness board next to each other like a bench top with a screw in the waste section to another scrap - just gives you a nice big flat platform to help the rookie feel like the saw wants to stay flat and stable (though you look comfortable enough there). And you can also screw another beam into the waste area to act as a fence for the saw. Just do a test cut against that fence piece and measure where the saw actually lands then set up the fence with that offset - you can get the precision of a really practised powertool user with quality tools for only a little extra setup time.

Thanks for putting this together, I'm planning out and building my own design that will use digitigrade legs, and seeing your build helped immensely on designing my own stilts. My build is kinda like an otherworldly corrupted druid - raven skull head with animatronic eyes, tattered clothing and feathers, avian legs/stilts, twisted staff with thorns and LED magic effects. Not sure if I'll complete it, but my first 3D skull helmet print turned out surprisingly well (and balanced!), at least

I just have one piece of vital advice for you: Watch fursuit making tutorials!!! As many as you can/want! Each one has their own lifesaving tips. As an aspiring fursuit maker myself I binge and rewatch as many as I can find as studying. They'll teach you how to build padding, how to pattern, how to work with fur (and how heat is public enemy #1) & take care of it... pretty much everything! There's tons of them on here, so here's my favorite channels as a jumping off point: Neffertity (if you're making a tail, watch all her different tail tuts!) Skyehigh Studios Mugiwara Cosplay Best of luck with your leggies!!

I'm REALLY late to this one, but when it comes to making angled cuts on wood, you may want to consider investing in a chop-saw. It's a saw that goes on top of a bench/table, it has a stage that you load the thing you wanna cut, and the saw blade is on a handle with a springed axel so after you pull down the blade to chop the piece it will automatically bring itself back up. The cool thing about them is that part of the stage is attached to the saw part and it can rotate with the saw (while the part of the stage that you clamp your piece to remains stationary). What's more is that the rotating part of the stage has markers for different angles and some of them even have locks/notches so you can quickly turn to popular angles like 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 degrees. Get yourself one of those, a nice Diablo brand blade if you have them down there, be sure to account for the thickness of the blade while making your cuts, and you're golden!!! Hope this helps instead of free-handing angled cuts in the future. Let the tool do the work for you!!

Your drill has a torque/clutch setting. Turn it up (large numbers) when drilling holes. Turn it down when driving screws. If you have the setting right, the clutch will allow the drill to "slip" before it breaks the screws.
@DodyStones
@DodyStones Месяц назад
When working with wood, it is best to predrill every screw location before screwing pieces together using a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the shaft of the screw. Between that and using the screw setting on the drill itself, you can save from snapping screws or splitting the wood. Also sanding and filing can save you from making a lot of scrap. If you cut just outside your markings you can sand or file down to your marking, making your cuts super precise. Also you can get fake moss used for models and miniatures to really enhance and add depth to those mossy hooves. All in all beautiful creation, keep up the good work!
