Check out the new Diamond Mounter merch!
cbilton.creato... In the latest episode on the Diamond Mounter channel I make this beautiful Aquamarine ring seen on Pintrest.
Almost my entire career I have often been given designs to replicate using stones that the customers already own and want to use. It very rarely is a straight forward thing to achieve!
With this in mind I thought the Aqua ring would be fun to make but using a large cushion shaped Topaz I have.
The Aqua rings collet has completely straight sides that match the stone so the challenge was to make a ring the looks the same but fits my Topaz that has very rounded sides and belly.
I wanted to show that with a little thought most technical problems can be overcome.
I show in detail every stage of the ring being made up to the point of joining the completed collet to the shank. I could not fully complete the mount as Im going to get the collet cast!
The channel has potential to grow in to a great archive of jewellers knowledge with your help.
With patrons support I will be able to offer far more information than I am currently able to.
With over 2 decades of knowledge gained in the jewellery trade working with some of the best diamond mounters in the UK I can train practitioners of jewellery making, up to and far beyond the skill level found in High Street jewellers workshops.
I have been lucky enough to have been taught by actual Bond Street shop model makers and my ambition is to share what I have learned through out my career to as many people as possible.
My vehicle to do this is the Diamond Mounter RU-vid channel and now after nearly 1 year of uploading video guides, its time to take it up a level.
My ambition is to be able to make instructional videos with not just silver, but gold and platinum also. Some proper jewellers soldering equipment will enable me to create much more special pieces too! This will open up a whole new world of information I have to share.
There are many specific methods and techniques used for the different precious metals and knowledge about gemstones I can teach that will never enter my videos unless I am actually working with them.
If you may be interested in becoming a patron and supporting the channel to help it grow please click the link below to go to the Patreon website and find out about all the benefits that come with being a Diamond Mounter patron.
www.patreon.co...
There is now a new entry level tier which costs just £1 a month.
Its named the supporter tier which allows you to support the channel with out any substantial financial obligation. I will thank you personally on the next Diamond Mounter video uploaded!
I hope you will consider becoming a patron.
Thank you,
C.Bilton
With this channel I will share with you the methods and techniques I have learned over the previous 23 years as a professional Jeweller.
I specialize in high end bespoke pieces made the old fashioned way by hand.
I wish to document everything I know and make accessible to everyone rare skills and techniques only usually taught in high security jewellers workshops.
Please hit like and subscribe to be notified of future uploads.

Hahaha I am so happy I found your channel. I have just spent the last 6 years designing my studio space under my house. I am super OCD and I needed to get my studio in order before I could really get going with using it. I do not know why I feel that way but I did and now its done. I am waiting for my laser welder to cross the sea this month and that will be the icing on the cake for being finished with all my tools. I will start doing videos and show you my space soon and we can have fun doing some cross back and forth videos on jewelry making. I finished over 900 classes that took me over many years with JTS Jewelry school and I am excited to start this adventure once and for all. Looking forward to seeing more of how you do stuff since its so different from the way I have been taught. Just love your show buddy. Talk to you soon. M

@@DiamondMounterThat’s exactly where I am now. Just a new hobbyist, but every time I try to solder on a claw the corner joint pings open. At least I’m getting practice making up the rectangular collet!

I like a nice specialty millenial cut Topaz. I Set several, including matched pair for my dad. See Ravenstein Germany. When using stone as guide for creating setting, I turn stone table down. Esp w something so clear its easier or fat belly stone.

Chris, the shanks are not twisted. You have refraction . When light goes from air to a solid you have refraction. It’s a right angle bend to the light rays. Sort of what happens when you stick a straw in a glass of water the straw looks twisted inside the water of glass. Great, video !

I am just getting into doing some silver work, and i am finding your videos very interesting... My main hobby is actually faceting gem stones, and its from that view point i am commenting here. your clearly a very experienced jewellery maker and you make some really nice stuff.. ;-) but your choice of stone is a let down. that Topaz is "fisheye" lacking enough depth in the pavilion for ideal cutting for maximum brightness. (to get rid of this, the stone would likely need to be a little deeper) I know that large stones are awkward to mount, but the piece in question would be so much nicer with a better cut stone. however that is the problem with many commercial cut stones..... they are cut for maximum physical size/weight rather than for best optical performance.

Nice video, also the split mandrel you can get of ebay for like 99p each with shipping. If you type in "tapered split mandrel" it brings around 20 up. Took me a while to find them but there awesome

Diamond Mounter YW. “Look at that shoulder! Completely pissed!” Lol made me laugh. I’ve been living in the UK for many yrs therefore found your English humour very relatable. I watch loads of jewellery making videos here on RU-vid but not many are as informative also funny. So thank you, please keep posting if you get time.

Chris, nice video I like large stone rings and the precision to detail in your videos is good I like them. You say about keeping the skin clearer of tools and rubbish when working with gemstones is right I can not remember who told me this story a mounter was mounting a searess diamond, tools in the skin drop the diamond the skin the skin and cleaved the diamond

The type of material used in molds can affect the shrinkage. I usually ask the company what material they are using. Silicones shrink less than rubber, but rubber has a longer shelf life....at least that's how i remember it.

Its funny, im currently trying to figure out the best way to set a large white topaz stone in silver and came across this video 😏 Thank you good sir. 👍 Side note - its not just Japan, I do my own casting and yes, there is always a small amount of shrinkage - never understood why.

I think, when it comes to Topaz..... White is a great practice material for a lapidary student, or to use when mapping out an experimental facet pattern for a more expensive gem. Otherwise Topaz would need to be London Blue, or Swiss Blue to make it worth setting. Since it’s not as durable and doesn’t have the fire of Cubic Zirconium.

What measurement tolerances would be acceptable in hand made high end jewelry? +/- 0.05mm or 0.02mm?
