Great solution dude!! I'm dying with the Jerry and green tape references. I really appreciate the shout out! Can you work on calibrating the spring joint out of my machine next time?! LOL. Oh, and I will DM you a thin strip solution that another maker across the pond came up with that was similar to mine, but worked much better.

@SawyerDesign 2 года назад
Agreed. Just need to decide where it’ll live. How do you like the open end? Does it thickness? I’m kind of thinking a closed system/wide belt might actually be more like what I need for consistency
@ChadHadsell
@ChadHadsell 2 года назад
@@SawyerDesign You're in the Portland area, right? I've got a 16/32 drum sander you can come test out if you want to see how they perform in person. I use it for acoustic guitar sides, tops, and backs, among other things. It's plenty accurate and consistent for what I do, but I haven't tried going down to 1/16" with it, yet. Come to think of it, I did do 3/32", but it was narrow strips, so the end-to-end variance didn't really matter.
@averagejoesworkshop
@averagejoesworkshop 2 года назад
@@SawyerDesign I think it does pretty well for consistency. There is an adjustment knob the keep the drum running coplaner to the feed belt and table, but I am surprised at how stable it is for thin strips. When I need liners for small boxes, it's never let me down. I also like the open end for larger projects that I am going to finish sand anyway, but this gets the bulk done. I mostly keep 120 grit loaded.

Seeing the results you're getting, I'd like to try the jig on my planer. I have a double drum sander, but my veneers coming off the bandsaw are rougher than I'd like. I feel like the planer would make faster work flattening it all out, then do a couple finish passes on the double drum for final thicknessing. My last veneer run took FOREVER since it doesn't remove nearly as much material per pass.
@SawyerDesign
@SawyerDesign 2 года назад

@@SawyerDesign I know Jet used to make a combo tool, similar to Metabo, which was also in the $700 range, but Rikon was the only one I could find in stock a few months ago. Supply chain issues, maybe? As for the shop size, I think a bigger shop is on every woodworker's wish list. 😁 It looks like you are getting the most out of your garage though.
@Projectoftheday
@Projectoftheday 2 года назад
I'm afraid you'll will get problems with feeding. On that model, the feed rollers are driven by friction against a large wheel with a plastic coating. if you press the feed rollers to hard, they will soon wear to a flat spot on the large wheel. Remove the side cover on the back of the planer and you will see what I mean. If you use the idea of ball bearings, it should work, I think 🤔
@torstenhuhse
@torstenhuhse Год назад
So if I understand correctly, you don't want the infeed and outfeed rollers to grab the wood? I have the same idea of machine from a different manufacturer and for jointing operations I can disconnect the rollers, not sure if you have that option. With the sled in place to keep the roller from pushing down and the rollers disconnected there should be no need for a bearing or anything in the location of the roller?
@SawyerDesign
@SawyerDesign Год назад
I don’t have the option to disconnect and still need them, just reducing the pressure on the infeed side.
@torstenhuhse
@torstenhuhse Год назад
@@SawyerDesign my machine is the Rikon, looks exactly like yours, 12" Jointer/planer, helical cutter head, and they put a Lever to disengage the drive pulley from the feed rollers so they don't turn during jointing. Thanks so much for all your uploads, your attention to detail is an inspiration.

I was going to suggest a drum sander, but noted that several others suggested that also. Since you're space-challenged, you might actually consider a quick side-adventure and bump out your garage shop wall. Framing isn't difficult, nor is concrete work... think of all the ways you could over-engineer the s**t outta that! Two final thoughts - 1) Don't know how the RU-vid algorhythm doesn't smack you for using 't**ts'; and, 2) (inner toddler here) I don't wanna wait ten days for your next posting. Keep up the awesome work.

I would be concerned that this hack could damage the feed rollers through time. If this is something you are going to use regularly it could be worth going with your suggestion of some sort of bearings for the feed rollers to press onto. Will be interesting to see what you come up with.
