One of the things I love about Phoibos is that they seek honest criticism of their watches. Then use that to improve them. The original version of their Wavemaster came out a year ago, and most of the reviews were rather positive.
Generally, people loved the Wavy dial and Super Engineer style bracelet. Yet there were a few concerns, and as a result, this 2.0 version was just released. Almost every aspect of the watch has been fine-tuned.
The Wavemaster is a 42mm wide diver with 300m water resistance. This version, the PY010C with a date utilizes a Seiko NH35A movement.

Am I the only one who likes the Phoibos logo on the dial? I think it's a nice change from all the watches with the brand name plastered across the dial.

I have the blue original model and there is no back play on the bezel whatsoever, it's a fantastic watch and feels very high quality.

Another fantastic review. I love the different close-up shots of the watch. Different bands keeps it flowing. The sound of your voice is so distinctive. You cover all the points without it being too long. Keep up the good work, and I see you being over 100,000 one day soon. I'm really thinking of getting this watch and the Abalone shell version too. Do you still like it now several months later? Any owners reading this, please share your experience.

I bought one this week and am really happy with it. Mine came on a nicely fitted rubber strap. No noticeable backplay on the bezel luckily. Almost impossible to find fault.

Great review sir! I'm really considering getting this watch. And you're right, the dial is the main reason this watch stands out. I don't know if anyone else has said this, but it is reminiscent of the Omega Seamaster's wave dial which I think is a huge plus. 🤓👍 P.S. - your voice sounds just like Patrick Bateman. Especially when you go into details about the dial. 😜

I was a day, maybe 2 days, away from ordering this watch before I saw your Insta post (ended up getting 3rd gen monster to feed the itch). I was all in on this piece but I now know my ocd can’t handle that bezel. As always, thank you for the video and I appreciate the quality review.

Whoa nice diver! I wish companies would ditch the "automatic" "meters" etc. letterings in the front to make the watch cleaner looking, they can put all that lettering in the back plate

Another beautiful review! Admiration for that! This is a new brand and I wonder what would it be like after 10 years...Really like the mix of colors- black wavy dial, light blue markers and orange like second hand. Among all the models this one really catches my eye.

Hmm, review came in just in time :) I have this new watch itch, and was really looking at this one. But I think I wanna save up a bit and get a steinhart, I have a weird pathological need for a rock solid bezel :) :) As always, top notch video and editing quality, really sets it apart from so many channels.

Hi Michael, i also own this PHOIBOS Wave Master and it´s one of my favorite designs. The bezel looks a little like a Tudor Black Bay. I use the Wave Master with a Hirsch Robby Performance watch strap black / orange 22 mm, which perfectly fit with this watch. The orange is the same like the second hand of the watch and the inside clock scale.

Shane, amazon have these for sale with the branded Phoibos rubber strap.Unfortunately Phoibos don't list these straps on their websites as an accessory for this watch. Not wanting to pay tax by purchasing from Amazon, I reached out to Phoibos and was able to purchase one separately at $30USD (the price of which was saved by applying Jody's JOMW discount code to the price of the watch). The watch with the bracelet sized to my puny wrists weighed 178g, whilst the rubber strap fitted to the head of the watch gave an overall weight of a mere 114g. A MASSIVE difference!!! I'm absolutely not a fan of cheap, crappy looking Nato straps fitted to ANY watch, so these were never an option for me. Also, a less expensive black rubber strap did not have much appeal, so the bona fide Phoibos option was the one for me.

I've had one for a while and noticed they seem to have gone up in price recently. The bezel on mine is solid with no backplay at all. Overall a very nicely finished piece with some great details and just a bit different from the norm.

I got the Mother of pearl edition the other day. I’m very happy, it’s a solid watch. It feels and looks like a much more expensive watch, I’ve paired it with a white leather strap and it really pops. The mother of pearl version has a few small touches like a framed date window that are just 👌

Good question. I'd say it's actually more comfortable, at least on the engineer bracelet. Just have to watch for the height.

I've worn mine every day for over a year, and it's held up better than the Omega Seamaster I bought in 1998 (the bracelet pins started falling out). Of course I was very abusive to it, which looking back is quite sad. But my Wave Master (the same color as yours), has always had great bezel lockup even though I fidget it often. No scratches on the sapphire crystal or ceramic bezel insert. Still great lume. It was very sharp and abrasive when I first got it, but eventually wore in and the wounds healed up. It's very rugged with some classiness and a bit on Bond villain.

Pronunciation: "foybos" (like "boy"). It is the classic Greek name that refers to Phoibos Apollo, the god of the sun. The name also refers to Apollo's grandmother Phoibe.

I love my blue no date wave master. I also have dainty wrists at 6 inches and the bracelet can be sized to fit that small (this is the older one) and it's super comfortable. I wore it all winter and it actually was good because of how close to my hand I wear the watch, so the long sleeves wasn't an issue. I have some things I'd change but overall it's probably my favourite watch.

Solid review as usual Shane👍I actually like this one too. Coin bezel is a nice detail compared to other divers. The dial reminds me a bit of my Seiko save the ocean Turtle. Yeah this one is nicely pulled together. Tempted, but I'm getting a Helm Vanuatu first this Friday so I have full set. But yeah, this might be a purchase right after that, or after my first Hamilton... Sidenote: us Europeans can use the EU website getting all benefits of that including better buyer protection!

Cosplaying as the original version, or the newer one from Specter? Got an email from them this morning. Seems they "loosened" it from the original because too many people thought it was too tight to turn. Evidently, they went too far. So I think now they are going to look into it for the next batch. Maybe the blue one will be a happy medium.

Yet another excellent review. I have two queries (1) what is the black strap with the blue center? That looks fabulous on this watch. 215g including the bracelet is rather heavy! (2) a bit of a shame Phoibos upgraded this model but not the movement to a Miyota 9000 (I guess it would then be competing with the PY007 models) I see on the 'net that the Seiko NH35s seem to get get a real hammering, but many new company's still use them extensively. I see that you rate these movements as robust/reliable. I absolutely love the dial

I prefer a Miyota 9015, but Seiko NH35s are good workhorse movements. From my experience the accuracy can vary wildly, but otherwise pretty good. Usually I list the straps in the description. Are you talking about the black silicone one?

My Wave Master Blue 1.0 has no bezel back play. The disappointments I have is that the case between the lugs is rough and unfinished which I discovered when I switched to a zulu strap. Another disappointment is the orange indices around the chapter ring is not as vivid as the second hand and as the 2.0. And the last disappointment is the crown is signed with the old logo in the form of a P rather than the octopus. If I had expected they would upgrade the quality I would have waited.

Great review of an improved watch. I have bought the eagle ray, because this one was sold out. The Eagle Ray with a nice Engineer bracelet would be nice ( maybe as a accessoire Mr. Phoibos) Great watch that Eagle Ray and not so bulky.

Nice review, I own the original Black Wave and the new Helm Komodo, these two are my favorite watches, it must be the light blue on the dials. Luckily my Wave’s bezel has no play and I wear it on a Light blue Barton Elite strap which matches the blue on the dial.

This seems to be the only source of information on the updated version. Can't find anything about the update anywhere else. Would it be safe to assume that all Wavemasters shipped from the official website now are updated?

I believe Phoibos sent out a few other Wavemasters to reviewers when they did the 2.0, but a few of them didn't bother to mention it was different. So you could look for any review done about the same time as this one. So when they released the gen 2, they only released it in black. The other 4 colors were just released in the last month and a half. So they could be some changes to those. If anything they might have reduced the back play in the bezel, but not 100% sure. Best place to ask might be the Phoibos Group on Facebook. I've seen a few people who have gotten some of the newer ones.

The back-play in the bezel is a non issue for me. Even if using it to time dives, simply go past the minutes hand and come back to it for accurate timing. This is a home run in my eyes. Well done phoibus!

I think some people put over emphasis on the the back-play. It's nice when there isn't any, but I don't think it's a deal breaker. Heck even a Rolex submariner seems to have a little bit of back play, but I don't hear that criticized very often.

@@buijs1967 Next week I should have a review of their new Great Wall out. I think it's their most ambitious watch yet. Although the design might be Polorizing. Has much more of a Monster vibe than the more elegant refined Eagle Ray. Bracelet is pretty nice. Kind of a Tank Tred type.

From the sound of it. Some complained on the first version that the bezel was too tight and hard to turn. So they "corrected it". Perhaps too much.

Own the series1 blue version... I love the change done to case, crown and bracelet, but the backplay at the bezel is a game stopper for me! Mine has absolutely no backplay and it feels perfect manipulating it - so what’s going on Phoibos you never had that QC issue before!

They told me that they received complaints on the series 1. Some said it was too hard to turn. So they made it easier... too easier. So hopefully they find a happy middle with the next batch.

It's all a matter of taste. Some just can't stand it. Personally I love it because it's different and it's not clogging the dial up with unnecessary text. It's simple and distinct.

I love the dial. I'm just not convinced about their customer service. I'm also not convinced this is definitely worth $100 more than say the Orient Ray Raven 2 that I've also got my eye on. 🤔. I know ultimately my choice but would appreciate your thoughts

Well just looking at the specs. The Wave Master has Sapphire, ceramic bezel insert and a pretty good bracelet. Not to mention better lume. Or so I assume, I know it's better than a Mako II. A lot of people love their Mako and Rays so much they upgrade them to a similar level, but they usually spend more than $100 to do it. The bigger question is if the slop in the bezel would bug you in the long run. I'm ok with it, but for some people, it would be a hard no.

It seems to be divisive. Some love it, some hate it. Their new Great Wall watch should be released soon. That's going to be an interesting one. Can you please ask Ethan from Phoibos when they are going to get the Abalone version back in stock. In addition to this nice black one, I really want to get the colorful Abalone one too. Customer service in broken English emailed me that they have NO plans to bring it back. But you can find out the truth from the source. I got my PY010C directly from Phoibos US warehouse and I’m very impressed with the piece. My only complain is the back play on the bezel it is horrible. However, it is not a critical issue for me so I can live without it. Phoibos please address this issue, the watch is otherwise fantastic. The bezel on my PY007 is tighter than a submarine nut, I don’t know why this is an issue with the Wavemaster.

This company gives consumers so much, for so little. I'd like to see them continue to refine and improve their lineup; and I do not mind if their prices rise in order to do so. I'm intrigued by the thought of what a company that can produce high quality, inexpensive products can accomplish, once they begin focusing on higher end products. Think Hyundai's Genesis line.

All the existing models I would have wanted to buy were out of stock and nowhere to be found anymore - only one year after initial release, So MY major concern is that they don't produce enough.- what's the point in a waych that you can't buy anymore after you found out that it even existed.

I’m not sure if Phoibos has the same issues that Helm does, but from talking to Helm one of their big issues is the huge demand for Seiko NH movements. They said that they have at least a 5 month lead time with their manufacture right now. So they have probably placed an order before they have run out, but half a year will go buy before that order gets fulfilled. Might be why a lot of Chinese specials seem to stick with Miyota movements right now. I guess there isn’t as much of a demand.

Another great review! Growing up in the 70s and 80s I'm a fan of the black, orange, blue colour combo. 👌 Is that wavy dial made of plastic? It is cool but it appears a little cheap to me. Perhaps in person it looks less plasticky. Maybe it is just me. I also wish they'd get rid of that logo. I know I'm being picky but it is frustrating to appreciate so many of their designs to have them ruined by a cartoon octopus. 🐙 Sorry for the rant. I have not finished my first coffee. 🙂

Honestly I'm not sure what it's made of. In person it looks pretty good. Some of the macro shots with the light might make it look a little plastic. You ever look at some of the Zodiac Sea Wolf watches? Some great color options.

HeyI recently got a Ted Baker watch, a TE50372002, just because I loved the design. I was the US a few weeks ago, and saw it on 35 american dollars in a department store. It didn't looked like bad quality, so I just bought it. I couldn't find information about the quality of this watches, so I am a little bit worried. Do someone know something about this brand? *Edit* I know Ted Baker is not a watch brand such as Timex, Orient, Seiko or Citizen, as I said I bought it just because I loved the looks, it was cheap and it didn't looked bad quality. My biggest fear is if this is some kind of DW or MVMNT

About the audio, the sound of "sh" and "ch" when you're saying words like "brushed", "polished" and "edge" is very sharp when using headphones. Did you speak very close to the mic or something?

I'm not really a diver-fan, but this one does look pretty good I must say. Agreed on the Mercedes hands though. Hey Shane, I have a weird problem: my daily watch is the Traser P67 with a Ronda 715 quartz movement and it usually runs about +2 seconds per month. But I recently got a new car and the watch looses about a minute for every hour it spends in the car for some reason. Have you ever heard of this before and do you think a movement upgrade could fix this issue? My only other solution would be to sell the car and get something else which would mean I would loose a lot of money. But the truth is that I care more about the watch than I do about the car, lol

Ok that's odd. No never heard of that. I guess it's possible some magnetic interference. I dunno. Maybe do some tests. Leave the watch in the car overnight with it not running and see what it does. Or switch arms and see if it still does it. Maybe something in the armrest doing something. Does it have wireless charging for a phone?

Thanks for the suggestions. I have not yet tried what happens when the car is turned off, but doesn't seem to matter where it is in the car. I put it in my bag on the backseat today and it still had the same problem. I'm going to sink all my quartz watches including a digital non-atomic Casio Protrek and put them all in the car to see if they will behave the same way. If it is magnetism it should also affect an automatic watch, right? I might as well throw my SNZG in there as well while I'm at it. The new car does have a few more electronic gadgets then my older one (same make and model, it's just a newer version with a different combustion engine) but it doesn't have a lot of wireless functionality. No charging, wifi or bluetooth anyway, and there's also no build in sat-nav. It does have things like automatic rain- and light- sensors but I doubt they are the cause of this. But I'll do some more testing and see what I can come up with. I'll keep you posted ;)

Well different watches may have different levels of shielding. So it may not effect them equally. Although I find it hard to believe it would be that. Just not sure what else could be going on. Just really strange.

Phoibus look like the front runners when it comes to dive watches in this price range now, with Spinnaker snapping at their heels. For my money Phoibus' design quirks are a bonus, and were I in the market they'd be the company I'd be looking at first. It seems likely that the bezel issue will be addressed in short order, but maybe it would be a good idea to hang fire for a while whilst they attend to it - otherwise they appear to have got everything right. All the tangibles are in place, so paying more is going to be about bragging rights, investment potential and all that boring non-horological stuff. Mind you, paying less is an effective option, so the Russian Clunker isn't going to get replaced.

Seems that some thought the original version's bezel was too tough to rotate. So the over corrected it here. Hopefully they find a happy medium with the next batch.
