Makita have always made excellent planers, corded and cordless. Great to see them carry on the tradition.

Makita top corded version KP312S cuts 3,5 mm/150mm wide , 2200W tool , of course its capacity is only 1,5 mm at 312 mm wide max cut , they could do 80V cordless model of it :-)

I think many people who dismiss the 40V platform as unnecessary are thinking in terms of specific tools, rather than in terms of a battery platform. Yes, a 1/4 inch impact driver doesn't need a 40v battery, as well as many other tools. They just don't benefit much and the batteries are larger, so that's a negative. But 40V is a battery platform that can accommodate tools that do benefit from the additional power available. And people using those higher draw tools also need impact drivers, basic drills, and smaller saws. So those tools also need to be in the 40V battery platform, even if they are unnecessary for those specific tools in a vacuum.

This is why I really wish they would have gone multivolt. I'd have a couple 40V tools. I have Makita and DeWalt tools, and Flexvolt is really nice to have.

I have the Makita 260mm 40v saw and it's incredible. There's no way on earth you can pull that many amps from an 18v battery.

I think the 40v platform is perfect all around even for smaller tools like impacts. They have small 2.5ah batteries which compare in size to milwaukee 18v batteries or makita 18v batteries. But the benefit is less heat build up on 40v. I'm slowly switching over to makita 40v. I'm with milwaukee and heat build up is a big problem, even on my impact after screwing alot of lag screws it heats up pretty quick. 18v requires double the current to produce same amount of power, and milwaukee little motors on they're impacts are really strong even stronger then makitas 40v meaning lots of heat build up. I have a string trimmer and in the summer you drain 1 battery and the second keeps going into thermal protection. And that's on multiple tools.

Im sorry, but i disagree.... Excluding the cordless hand drill which has been specifically designed for battery use and general use... (it screws screws, it drills holes in wood, and can do light masonary work) and its ideal for those conditions with many labour saving accessories.... (imagine a "corded hand drill", which dosent even look like a cordless, trying to do what a cordless does?... its designed for higher loads and mainly drilling into masonry, no quick single handed locking chuck V.s sds chuck which no cordless hand drill has, unless you buy the bigger ones....) I know "we" know this, but im just putting it out there, that cordless is only good for 1 tool only.... Everything else..... corded.... Consider a "high power/current drain grinder"..... It flatens a 40v 8amp batterie in 30 mins, when you take it off the tool its MAD hot 🔥 , and takes 10 mins to cool-down before "fast" charging can commence..... During its use, it held 90% of its strength till the last 15% where it started to slow down and not work properly, locking up and eventually ineffectual as a tool...... This 40v 8amp batterie now takes 76 minutes to charge where you "can not use the power tool"........at all, unless you buy another 80v 8amp battery at $400 each...... giving 60 mins maybe 65 mins of worktime including battery "swap outs" and charger insertions into "fast charger"....... Consider what this is doing to the battery?........ and within 6 to 9 months, the battery is stuffed..... so you make a claim in the warrenty, and they exchange it once..... then within your 3 year guarantee, another 6 to 9 months later, that battery is also "stuffed".... (the extreme electron flow causes deposits to build up on the terminals which accept charge, and are used to discharge power when needed, this "growing restriction" then effects both charging time, and the ammount of power available,and conversley its effectiveness is reduced by not being able to discharge that that it has in the same speed and amount) hence the need to have multiple battery claims on highly abused batteries...... "They" won't do a second warrenty claim, as it costs them a $400 loss everytime they hand out another free battery (they try claiming that back off manufacturer, but eventually, manufacturer will claim "abuse" and refuse after the first 1,000 claims nationally..... then it just becomes "goodwill" between you and the retailer, and on the second claim within your gurantee, the retailer asks you to contact manufacturer and "r.m.a" it. (Thats why guarantees are 1 year shop, +2 years from manufacturer, + 1 more year if you "register" your product with them "on line", so they can SPAM THE HELL OUT OF YOU....and sell your address to others who will send you adverts you cant "unsubscribe" to...)....... (im sick of it).... 🤬🤬🤬... Anywho, manufacturer refuses to honour guarantee, as they claim "exceptional working conditions beyond "normal" working conditions (who the "f" decideds that then?).... and the 40v batteries are not "contractor grade equipement".... (eventhough their advertising is specifically aimed at contractors)....

Great review. I've got heaps of 18V tools but have taken the plunge on the 40V 3/4 impact. Comes with two 4ah batteries, Charger(with 18V adaptor) and one of the 40V grinders via Makita redemption offer. At $937 delivered I thought it was a good opportunity to test the waters in the XGT line. Looking forward to trying it out and will be grabbing an 8ah battery to try before long. My 18V gear will be going nowhere but for tools that need real grunt I'm sold on the XGT's after seeing your reviews! Cheers.

I too from uk Try the word "Concise"..... i too agree... a natural salesman, as he is passionate about tools and the building trade being there himself Its his life.... Hence, he dosent come across as false or snide, or a "con man" as every word is genuine and from the heart... Manufacturers seek these kinds of people, as they are so valuable to product sales, and like "p.f" i think this channel will also get 3 million subscribers.... (I cant mention a competatives name on anothers channel as its just not "sportsman" and promoting another on someone elses channel is in my opinion, the height of ignorance.... so please dont ask me, as i like and respect both channels).... (I think also refering to a person in the third person infront of them ie on their channel, can be considered atleast rude, if not offencive.....?) So with that in mind, if i have caused any offence which was not my intention to do so, and was required by virtue of the conversation being held, then i offer my sincerest apology, and again state that, that which was said (written) was without any kind of mallace or bad feeling towards this wonderfull channel, as i have commented many times offering admiration for both creator and subsiquent content..... I also have no bad feelings towards "kiwis" or anyones ethnicity.... 🙂.... please dont be pissed at me, i ment no halm...

A very good video indeed and one I was very much awaiting. Thank you. The crosscut was very useful and I learned something too - don't do it in one pass, split it so there's no breakout on the other end. I'm not sure why this planer could not be designed to do any depth of rebate. The bigger of the two Festool electric planers is designed to do just that. It looks like they'd just need to lop off some of the dust port and move the allen wrench. That said, there could be an issue with battery width and if so, it's not something that could be offset without doing damage to the balance of the tool. That 3mm vs 4mm when flattening wood greater than 82mm in width seems like the only poorly designed part of the tool. While 3mm is indeed plenty and I cannot imagine why one would need to do 4mm in one pass, they still allow you to try is is a bit daft and looks like it could have been easily remedied. Given that Makita invented the electric planer, it's good to see that they're competitive like Fein's oscillator.

@mohammedisaa9952 10 месяцев назад
Agree..... "but".... today is all about marketing and neanderthals that say "well..... my planer does a 4mm gouge whilst yours only does 3mm"...... The difference might only be 0.5 of a mm, but its still "one upmanship".... Thats where we are today..... 😮‍💨.....

Should a guy steer clear of the 4ah? Here in canada a 4ah sells for 229 and a 2.5ah (if you can find one) is still 200. If its used on a hammerdrill or vaccuum, would the power duration out weigh the power loss?

Nice video. After using all Makita planers in Timberframing ( the big 12" handheld) and the cordless, all i can say is the quality of the tool and the way it feels in your hand is unmatched comparatively to other brands. Actually Makita is the only manufacturer to make the larger beam planers if im not mistaken. I've used the Dewalt cordless planer and its feels cheap in the hand and does not have features of the Makita. Although, i do like the power of Dewalt's battery platform, i feel their tools are not as smooth.

You've mentioned in other videos that your 4ah is weaker than your 2.5ah. In this vid the 8ah smashed the 5ah, so it's not a problem with the cells. Do you think Makita has throttled the 4ah or maybe your 4ah is dodgy (bad thermistor?)

I thought I watched this video when it came out but evidently I didn't. I'm looking at buying this XGT planer. Pretty good price deal going in now with a free 4ah battery. But your test with the 4ah is a little disconcerting. All the "free battery" deals Makita offers for XGT are 4ah batteries. All I have are three XGT batts, all 4ah. Gonna have to bite the bullet and get at least one 5ah, or a kit with 2.5's. hmm... Anyhoo... Looks like an awesome planer. Makita's legacy is power planers.

Hi tool and staff. Thank u for the videos. I'm a regular viewer of channel here in mozambique, a country in the southwest of Africa. I do have the 18v and it does the job. Unfortunately in South africa, a country where I buy these tools the 40v platform is not available and I have to import from UK or German dealer. The problem is that by air there is a limit on the shipment of the battery and they can only ship up to 2.5h with the machine. I was thinking to go for some 40v tools and my question is how does the 2.5ah 40v battery compare to any range of 18v specially the 6ah which are battery that are available? How would really appreciate your view on that. Thank you very much for your videos
@yellowboat8773
@yellowboat8773 Год назад
Hey mate not sure if your still waiting for a reply, but if you are limited to amperage then definitely go the 40v range. The wattage is a lot higher with 40v 2.5amp when versus the 18v 2.5. Get more out of the 40v range

Malaysia. I've got nothing funny to say... But I will join your giveaway just for fun, also finally 40V planer, and with 2.5Ah battery it performs very well, I don't need to get some "high output" batteries as all 40V batteries so far are high output enough for jobs

Btw, this is why the Makita XGT is really worth it in the long run imo, reliable, all batteries are high output, powerful yet smooth feeling tools, yes expensive but once you get onboard no regret(at least for me lol)

That 8Ah is a beast! Got me really hooked on this one, too bad we don't have the planer here (Denmark) yet. I just bought an 18V grinder (DGA517) because I already had 18v batteries laying around and it was the only 18v grinder amongst all others (Except for the identical 40v type) that I like and wanted. An added bonus is that the higher end Makita 18v here is Made in Romania or UK and a few oddities made in Japan, rather than China which they are in other parts of the world. It's sad that the high end 40vs more regular tools are all made in China rather than Japan, or Romania. But I might have to look into the 40v series of tools from now on, despite the probability of them all being made in China.

Bosch, Milwaukee (Hikoki?)). ..."like a man" 😂😂😂 so you take your confidence out of your tools? Could I also do that if I'm a woman?

Wont be too far off having 100v tools.. When the next flavour of batteries come out that are more density and energy efficient.. I love lipo's we all do.. But there not the answer moving forward, too heavy.. You only have to look at the major complaints of car and electric aircraft.. Power yes, weight a big issue.. Lipo chemistry requires significant substrate volume to achieve high power.. I've read something about some honeycomb stuff being tested that supposedly has massive potential in the future.. Id call my own bluff, but we all know where we've come from in the last 30 years.. From a floppy disc that holds a few mb's to disc less drives that hold terrabyte's and so on...
