How much better is the Makita 40v Split Shaft Power Head over the 36v (18v x2) version? Or can you just get the 18v and be happy with that? This is an in-depth look at the power heads themselves before looking at how they do with the Blower attachments. Over the next few months I will try and go through all the attachments available. Ive had the 18x2 for over a year and its awesome. So far i have a string trimmer, articulating hedge trimmer and pole saw attatchment with a drive shaft extention and i use all of them often.

I've been using the 18v professionally for a while now. Very happy with it. I certainly won't be bothering with the bigger units as the battery runtime by comparison is just not worth it. The 18v is plenty powerful enough for strimming and hedgecutting although I mostly use them for strimming. The only annoying bit for me is the lack of reverse on the 18v.

I have the 18V x 2 head. It's a solid tool and I use it primarily with an edger attachment. It will beat you up after a few minutes as it gets a bit heavy and it's so powerful that it wants to pull you along as it runs. It definitely beats my Milwaukie stuff in the run time department. I've found my Milwaukee outdoor tools (even with high output batteries) tend to inhale battery power where my Makita tools seem to be more efficient.

36 volt tool is the oldest tool out of the three. I run gardening maintenance business in Sydney and very happy with makita gear. For hedge trimming I think I stick to the 18 volt and 36 volt power heads because don’t want more weight if hedge trimming all day. Great review.

I was very keen to watch this as I have a hedge growing I planted last year that I want to get up to 4-5metres in height. After watching I think the 18V will be the way to go. Less weight and I have 12 batteries from work tools anyways.

You're right. That safety power off nanny is a HUGE turnoff. I'd immediately have to put a zip-tie around the safety lever for my own sanity, and pull it back when I intend to leave the tool alone.

Nice. Jumped the gun and got the DUX60 with the pole saw, cultivator, broom, hedge trimmer and line trimmer attachments. Looks like the broom shaft can be used with the paddle flaps when these can be purchased as spares with no shaft...

Tried my EN400MP hedge trimmer with the DUX60 this morning. This thing is built like a tank and heavy. Chomped through up to 3cm branches of Bougainvilleans with no issue. Batteries were only one bar down when the job was done. Issue is weight. It feels like sport lifting that thing above your head...

I am not wedded to any battery platform - based purely on build quality of the machine and attachments, what would be your pick between Makita 18 x 2 or the Milwaukee Quik Lok system? Thanks

I just got a brand new 18x2 power head, with chainsaw and trimmer attachments. WARNING: Don't over tighten the attachment clamp. The plastic clamp/sleeve where attachments inserts into is made of relatively brittle plastic. I cranked the tightening lever too far and the clamp cracked. (part# 318750-6, that I can't find anywhere to purchase the part). Hopefully a pipe clamp will suffice...

Bummer about your 18x2. Mine looks fine so I guess the factory used that mold for a bit longer than they should have. I'm curious what your experience is with the slow speeds. I really wish the 18x2 had much more granularity with the variable trigger. The difference between off, and fast enough to damage a fence post with the string trimmer, is like a single millimeter. I have pretty good dexterity, but it's still really difficult to keep it in the sweet spot while working around more delicate stuff. That's been my only gripe with it. Otherwise, it's been more than powerful enough for going through pretty thick overgrown grass with the string trimmer. My yard has tons of little areas I have to trim after mowing and I've never gotten the batteries down past half.

The world waited for a video like this! About one year I thought about buying or not buying a DUX18, and there were nearly no videos out about this powerhead - disregarding the Makita commercials. About two weeks ago I finally bought the DUX18 and NOW you come out with this video! My "DUX18ZX1" came with the "EM408MP"-trimmer-attechment, so at the moment it is the only attechment I have experience with. For the 2-corded trimmer head (2mm string) the DUX18 has enough power, most of the time I only use the slower speed. Working longer time with it I definitively feel the weight of the tool and I'm happy that I decided NOT to buy the heavier DUX60. The high speed of the DUX18 is about the same as of the DUX60, so at least att he moment I don't miss a third speed on my DUX18. What I'm missing a little bit is the reverse mode! I don't understand why Makita didn't put one on the DUX18. Yes, the tool goes off very fast after you put your hand off the triggers. In the beginning it was a little bit annoying, but very soon I began to handle it unconciously, so I don't really see a problem in this. A battery-indicator nearby the on-/off-button would have been nice. I would like to see a comparison of the "KR400MP"-16cm cultivator attachment. Would like to know whether it's good in digging grown and dry(!) hard gras soil with the DUX18 or not.

Great review. Ive had the (18v x2) for about 2 years and use it nearly every day. My one has none of the quality control problems yours have. When it wears out Id like to upgrade to the 40v one to get extra power for the pole saw but the (18v x2) has plenty of power 99% of the time

I would say the 18 X2 is a couple of generations older compared to the other two. That may also explain the fit up of the case as it is probably worn out tooling.

If only this video had dropped two weeks ago! I just bought the 40v power head (and pole saw, and pole hedge trimmer, and brush cutter) kit to replace my old 36V U handle line trimmer, primarily for the power increase. It is my first 40V tool and was a tough decision over the 36V given the myriad 18V Makita batteries I have around the place. I was immediately dismayed by the instant power off "feature", given it shuts off just moving between different sections of the garden. I understand maybe on a chainsaw that is hand-held, but on a tool that is hanging from your body it just makes no sense to me. Fortunately I have discovered that the top safety trigger extends further than the main trigger, such that tying it down by wrapping a bit of tape around the grip is simple, even if not strictly advisable. This does not impact the operation of the power button, and the tool can be turned off with the button prior to placing it on the ground. Great review btw, really appreciate the lengths you go to to illustrate the differences between the tools.

That's one of those tools the 8ah battery was made for. 9minutes is not very very long. With the 8ah you should get around 12-13min. of runtime. And a nice review. Thanks!!

I've just unpacked my new DUX60 and toys from the kit I bought. There is that definite bad flashing in the moulding. It really is a big step up in the feel and weight from my old DUR190. Not had a chance to use it beyond a few trigger tools given it's dark and its been raining in sunny old QLD all day. Thank you again for your review of the heads, I will be interested in knowing your thoughts when you get around to looking at the attachments.

This system that almost automatically shuts off the tool after a second or 2 is the most annoying/stupid/frustrating feature on any Makita battery tool. I've had a Makita commercial hedge trimmer for 3 years now and it has been THE best hedge trimmer I've ever used in my small landscaping business. From the weight to quality to class leading 4400 cuts per minute - a perfect tool. Recently I decided to buy the pole hedge trimmer with a bit of a reach for those wide hedges that you can't cut from one side only. And naturally, given that I'm invested in the Makita system, have a few 5Ah batteries laying around and the fact that I was more than pleased with their hedge trimmer, I went out and bought the Makita DUN500W... You can imagine my surprise when I realized that the pole hedger has the same feature like the 18 and 40V powerheads - the tool shuts off after one second. So now every time you wanna start it, while cutting some giant hedge, it's not enough to simply squeeze the trigger, oh no.. You have to press the ON button before the trigger.. This is so annoying and frustrating that I'm mad as hell. Selling the damn thing isn't really an option given that this was quite an investment for me so loosing money on it is out of the question. And what else could I buy anyway? I mean, I know what I could buy but given that I need a commercial grade equipment, buying a new pole hedge trimmer from Husqvarna, Stihl or EGO (together with batteries and a charger) is simply not an option. I'm considering going to my local dealer and ask their technicians if there's a way to shut of this function, even if this would void my warranty. This is not a small thing, this is a feature that's making me mad, really mad... I regret entering the Makita tool universe just because of this nonsense..

can the 18v x1 run the power sweeper , cause if so I'll keep mine instead of grabbing the 36v , especially since I got it with battery and charger for SUPER cheap and I finessed it onto my Milwaukee trimmer and it ran it just fine just wondering if it will perform. the same since they're both 18v

Thanks bro, great video! Got the UC004G 40v Chainsaw, awesome and now just got the 40v Power Head with Pole Saw & Hedge Trimmer, will get the Blower too. Ultimate MTB trail tools, the power & ease is great. There are 2 Pole Saws, the 401 Japanese Made model & the 402 Chinese Made, both look good but the 401 has more solid casing & shorter bar. Also there are 2 Hedge Trimmers models. Thanks again!

What's the runtime on the standalone 40V blower? Do you still have the M18 power head? What are the chances of fitting the Makita blower to the Milwaukee power head? Is it just the outer shafts that don't fit or do the inner spline shafts not fit either?

@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL Blower is 12min on 4ah. Power head is 9.5min on 5ah. So is the powerhead much less efficient or is it actually doing more work (despite having a lower airspeed). Can you put them both on a scale, pointing upwards, and see which one produces the most reaction force? You might need to elevate the standalone blower so that it's intake doesn't get restricted.

The time on the shut off is ridiculous on the 40 and 18. For that reason I would not even consider it. I currently have the 36 and love it. I don't have the fitment issue on the plastic that yours does. I do however agree with you on the trigger. The 40v trigger is by far nicer. The hole to hang it on a screw is a nice touch though. Makita needs to fix that shut off time or I think a lot of people are going to opt out for another brand. Thanks for the great content.

I do have those gaps on those black hard plastic parts , it does not affect the use , when one hand is on trigger and the other on front handle , and eyes should be following the attachment that most likely has some cutting tool on it . They are trying to stop injuries with fast shut off features , like that safety feature on lawn movers , that stops it if your hands slip off .

I thought they would have learned their lesson about fast power off annoyances from the first 36v chainsaws. They would power off in 3 seconds everyone hated it. My dealer said that that was demo models only. My saw stays on for 60. And its 36 volt so maybe they only "fixed" that on the 36 volt line of tools.

Love my dux60 its awesome has been my ho to with whipper snipper / line trimmer for everyday commercial use. For 12 months now u must have got a dodgy one. Also love the trigger compared to the other style trigger also the dux60 does turn off like the others

Interesting - just bought the 18v with a line trimmer and edger, to replace the lightest trimmer in the range which the work head (not the power head) had melted itself and then gone all explody (I kid thee not - it was working real hard as an edge trimmer on buffalo grass). New machine albeit still 18v like the last one worked a treat and coped much better. But here’s the kicker - salesman who sold me the power head said the 36v was still an 18v and the two batteries just doubked the run time. On that basis I didn’t buy the 36v instead opting for the 18v (and glad I did - it goes good and is not too heavy) I’d be interested in confirming the actual voltage of the 36v - which is the same as my lawn mower (which he said was strictly an 18v as well)…

The person who sold them to you has no idea what they are talking about. All the mowers are 36v as is the powerhead. There are very few tools which take 2 18v batteries which are not 18v tools. Robot vac, cooler, a light or 2.

So far, I'll stick with my 18v x2. That "safety shutoff" is ridiculous. If I had that happen doing a lot of work that had me setting it down to clear the cut branches and trees I'd get pretty annoyed. Tell me: who works safer when they're annoyed? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thanks for the comparison. Looking forward to the next one. BTW our model # in Canada are the same as yours, it's just America, not North America that's different. 😜

I’m close to buying the 40V powerhead. I think I’ll just tape the safety switch down…. The constant switching off would be too annoying. I hope someone will tell Makita that if you overdo safety, people will find a way around it and actually be less save.

I suppose the trigger on the 2x18v unit would be more comfortable to use for extended periods since the fingers of your hand would all be lined up on the handle as compared with the other two units where one or two fingers would always be stressed more than the others.

Dude the mikita mm4 trimmer is without a doubt the best trimmer I have ever used. Im sorry but as long as mikita and honda still make gas trimmers I will not go to cordless trimmers.

The 36v battery protector is copper. Even if you bang it up there is no rust. It's powerful, I cut through my metal roof when I knocked it with the hedge trimmer.

They most definitely are not made of copper. Copper would be a ridiculous choice for such an item because it's way to soft and expensive.

Nice Legion laptop I wonder how it'll stack up against its competitors, both from the general power tool companies and the OPE specific companies. I got a feeling the bigger battery OPE reviewers will say the Ego will come out on top, they basically always say that, even if you can see in their own footage that it either doesn't, or by a margin so small it just doesn't matter.

Just found out Dewalt is making one of those pruners like you got off bang good. DCPR320D1 it's on pre-order for 119 USD so it's not stupid expensive like the makita. I know it's off topic but thought you may be interested.

Have the 36v one and love it great tool. The stay on longer is a massive help. But using it above ya head makes ya arms pretty tried pretty quick so if the 40v is heavier. Idk

Damn, I would've really liked the 18Vx2, since I'm in the 18V system and have quite a big yard, but that trigger and the finish quality are putting me off a bit. I like the weight of the 18V, but I'm a bit worried it just won't cut it. Curious to see how it fares in the upcoming tests.

I have filmed a video with the cultivator attachment and the 18v just didn't have the oomph. The 18vx2 is much better and has the longer cut off which is much better.

@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL Yeah I kinda expected that. Have you tested / will you test other attachments too? Have you at any point pinched your finger between the trigger and the body on the 18x2? I feel like that would happen to me a lot for some reason, since I always manage to pinch my fingers like that. Personally, I do think I prefer the instant cutoff of the other two, just to make sure you don't accidentally start the machine after putting it down, but maybe my opinion would change after using it. If the other two didn't stay on while holding the safety trigger, that would've been a massive issue, but as they work now, I probably wouldn't mind that.

Well, there goes the want for the 40v power head. I would use it as a javelin for sure. Sometimes I am bewildered by some features that makita, other brands as well, have incorporated into their products. Fell like every producer of goods should a common sense department.

i have the 36V makita DUR364 (about 600Watts with motor located on the head )running time 10 minutes only on heavy tall grass in the field. i Want to buy either the 36V DUR369 1kw motor located in the handle with the 2 X 18V battery or the 40V 5A using same motor 1kW UR008GZ01. i hesittate between the two as i dont know what future battery in 18V or 40V version will be in maximum size availible.

The 40v has much larger batteries and always will. The largest 18v is 6Ah. 2 of those is 36v at 6Ah. There is a 8Ah 40v battery already.

40v is the top at the moment. But the do make an 80v brush cutter, so an 80v Power head may happen.

I actually just got the xgt 40v with the string trimmer. Nice to see this review. I am also annoyed by how the power cuts out right away. I am still getting used to it but it seems like it was made pretty well. I bought the stand alone blower prior and had been waiting on the power head with the string trimmer to arrive for several months. I am now wondering if i should have held out for the blower attachment instead of buying the stand alone blower. The attachment seems really handy

Im the same, bought the stand alone blower and now thinking maybe I should’ve waited for the attachment and power head. But then again, it seems the stand alone is much more ergonomic and comfortable to use, and honestly not that much more expensive than the attachment. Selling the stand-alone to get the attachment could be useful for saving space, but it wouldn’t save money at this point. So I think I’ll keep the stand alone, it’s been really nice to use with a strap too. At least that’s what I’ll tell myself…

The 18v stand alone blower is absolutely fine. Definitely more pleased with that than the 40v power head I bought. The run time is something that I don’t think I’ll ever get used to.

They won’t. I just got the 40v to replace my stihl kombi and I’m struggling to love it. Nice to be able to strim and listen to music at the same time, but strimming with a 5.0 40v battery only lasts 10 minutes on full power. The hedge trimmer attachment is great but much heavier than the Stihl.

@@selwonkmada Ahh poo. I've got a couple of XGT tools & batts, so it wouldn't cost much to add the XGT power head, but not keen on shelling out for a whole bunch of new attachments that I already have for Stihl. The short run time would probably suck as well.

Yeah the 18V and 40V seem to have been designed and spec’d by the senpai san (先輩) in the house whilst they left the stop-gap 36V to the kōhai kun (後輩). The 18V and 40V have real dead man switches. Dead man switches are there for a reason. Nothing worse than some nasty foreign object wrapped around your shaft.
