Will the torque limiters kick in on one of these models before the other? My original first review of the Makita 40v Rotary Hammer HR001G can be found below.
Is it worth upgrading to 40v?

Videos and pics don't do it justice. The XGT ( using 2.5ah and not ridiculous 5ah) is NOTICEABLY more petite than the x2 version. I got used to the X2, but the XGT is much closer in size to the 18v Bosch and Metabo hammers I was using. Of course, it's also way more powerful. XGT was supposed to be supplemental, but I think I may just consider it a slow rollover.

I've used that drill to core a 5" hole in red brick. It's a beast and doesn't try to rip your arms out. Although it states only being able to do 65mm, so I've ordered the Twin 40V which can do up to 7", comes with a twin 40V charger as well

I see that there is not less than 1cm(0.4inch) between two batteries in the 36v hammer, in fact I guess two batteries included 21700cells may fit in this tool. though makita usually made tools which dont have any space between batteries. I saw recently aliexpress started selling boxes for 21700cells in 2021 though I didnt buy it yet it's interesting

Just watched this for a second time. One advantage, I think, that a brushed tool has is torque right from a dead stop. Like when when you hit rebar while drilling, I think a brushed drill would've been able to break loose better. Has anyone else had that experience? Obviously I prefer brushless tools. But a brushed motor, with it's lower tech, sometimes seems to just have more brute strength. Anyhow, thanks for the video. Cheers!
@TheBalcerman
@TheBalcerman Год назад
"I think, that a brushed tool has is torque right from a dead stop" - nope. That's not the case. Actually brushless motors hit peak torque faster and have much smaller "dead zones" when magnet need to initiate position of the rotating element. Instant torque is always better in brushless motor under the same power source and with similar form factor. What we see here is probably the internal safety trigger of the tool itself.
@markhedquist9597
@markhedquist9597 Год назад
@@TheBalcerman Interesting. I guess I didn't take into consideration all the electronics involved in controlling a brushless motor.

Its really odd that the 36V tool seems to have less torque than the 40V tool since technically the motor assembly in these hammers should be the exact same thing since these hammers are so similar and run on the same voltage. Cant be the batteries also 2x18V packs in series are certainly not less powerful than one 40v battery its just the same number of cells in series. In theory you are actually getting a beefier powerpack with 2x18V batteries since you have two cells in parallel in each 18v pack while with a 40v pack you have one cell handling all the current except for the huge 5.0 and 8.0 packs. All Makita batterys these days are made with Sony Murata VTC cells aswell. More or less the same output currents for 18V and 40V when you look up the specsheets. Id love to put the theory to the test since as an example a standard and most common BL1840B Battery should put out 792W peak (Voltage x max discharge current according to specsheet for the VTC4 cells they use in these packs) or around 44 Amps max output current. A 4.0 BL4040 pack should have peak output of 1080W or around 30 Amps max output current. They use big 21700 VTC6A cells that's how they can supply that power level without having cells in parallel. The 18V packs are a parallel series configuration remember they have two weaker cells in parallel and then connect five of these paralleled up cells in series to get to 18V. So 2x18V at 44 Amps is 1584W peak output. Of course I don't have a bunch of Makita batterys and a digital load bank to test the theoretical numbers. So maybe the 40V tool does have a slightly stronger motor or some kind of XGT magic to unlock more torque?

one thing I've noticed about makita lxt is how nannying the over-discharge protection is. these two should be technically identical, but when drilling rock, I've come up against the circuit board on my makitas. at least, that's what I think it is 90% sure. xgt tools appear to be more leinient, letting the operater decide more when his tool has had enough.
@CSLFiero
@CSLFiero 3 года назад
@@Andrea-Zerg my understanding is that the 18 650s used in this are rated for 20 amps, but I think the lxt platform is cutting you off somewhere between 15 and 18 where is the xgt platform isn't afraid of letting you boil the chemistry. I honestly think this is more appropriate, because battery chemistry is much more stable in the last 10 years since those numerous lithium ion fire scandals

I forgot to mention the tire inflator. Makita will release things outside of Japan that they never offer to their native market or release things in random places days to years before they release them elsewhere. So, you have to stay vigilant and check their Asian, American, UK and NZ/AU websites to get the full spectrum.

@@robertrada6040 thanks for the heads up. Very tempted to get their track compatible 7 1/4 but I may wait to see what the track saw is like. Am also considering the HKC 55 but it seems underpowered
@robertrada6040
@robertrada6040 3 года назад
@@grahamm2928 Not only is it underpowered, it can’t cut a US 2x4 at a 45 while in the crosscut track. 😂. That said, I know of a Mafell freak that used the HK55C for a long time without any issue. They liked it, it just wasn’t expected to be a beast. My little KSS40 isn’t that powerful but it does it’s tricks when required. However, I never grabbed the other cordless Mafell saws because they’re better in every way but for one thing: still 18v(and the price, of course). I haven’t gotten an XGT 7-1/4 yet, but I have had the brushless X2 for some time and it spoiled 18v saws for me. The 165 XGT is a beast. It’s not built as well as Mafell/Festool, but it performs just as good and runs circles around them in the power department. The 125mm is more powerful than the KSS40…but I’ve come to realise that I want the the KSS40 features over the XGT power when working with 3/4” and under material. It’s going to be trim, woodworking or laminates, after all. If you want something with an attached mitiring crosscut rail: only Mafell and Festool do it. If you just want to be able to use a straight guide rail once and a while with with your go to saw, I’d go with the XGT Makita, tbh. Just remember that you lose a 1/4” of cutting depth before putting on the track.
