The Organ Concert Series at "Malaga Cathedral" is the city's oldest classical music festival, organized by the Cabildo Catedral. Established in the 1980s, it has been a prominent cultural event ever since. This year, the festival will feature the world premiere of variations on the iconic theme "We Shall Overcome," popularized by Joan Baez, composed by Fausto Caporali. In collaboration with organist Antonio del Pino, they will perform these variations, specially arranged for the organ at Malaga Cathedral, adding a unique and ceremonial touch to the festival.
Malaga Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Incarnation (Catedral de la Encarnación), is a stunning example of Spanish Renaissance architecture located in the heart of Malaga, Spain. This magnificent cathedral is notable for its impressive structure and rich history, making it one of the city's most significant landmarks.
Construction and Architecture:
Construction of Malaga Cathedral began in 1528 on the site of a former mosque, shortly after the Reconquista when the Catholic Monarchs reconquered the city from Muslim rule. The building process spanned over two centuries, with major work concluding in 1782. Despite this long construction period, the cathedral remains incomplete; one of its towers was never finished, earning it the nickname "La Manquita" (the one-armed lady).
The architectural style of Malaga Cathedral is predominantly Renaissance, though it features elements of Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical design due to the extensive time it took to complete. The cathedral’s façade is Baroque, designed by the architect José de Bada y Navajas. Inside, the cathedral boasts a grand interior with beautiful chapels, stunning stained glass windows, and a remarkable choir carved by Pedro de Mena, one of Spain's most renowned sculptors.
Historical Significance:
The location of the cathedral is historically significant as it stands where the city's main mosque once stood during the Muslim rule of Al-Andalus. The transition from mosque to cathedral symbolizes the shift in religious and cultural dominance in the region.
One of the cathedral’s most notable features is its impressive organ, which is renowned for its rich and powerful sound. The cathedral hosts regular concerts and is a pivotal location for cultural events in Malaga.
Modern Day:
Today, Malaga Cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a major tourist attraction. Visitors are drawn to its architectural beauty, historical significance, and the serene ambiance that it offers. The cathedral also plays a central role in the city's religious celebrations and festivals, particularly during Holy Week (Semana Santa), when it becomes a focal point for elaborate processions.
