One can't comprehend how vast is the space until you're in St. Peter's. It accomplishes the task of putting you in AWE. Of making you feel small. The letters in the frieze lining the top of the nave and round the dome may look just readable when you're down there but they are enormous! The statues look the right proportion at a distance, but again, when you come closer, you realize how big they are. Amazing building, whatever your religion is. A must see.

This is the best architectural history video I have ever watched. You combine information of many kinds, about architecture but also about the individuals and their differing visions, and combine it with excellent visuals. The pace is just right: fast and packed with information that keeps your interest, but not too fast. I have visited St Peters and I have watched other videos, but today I learned many significant things I had never known before. Probably the most interesting is the fact that there are imperfections in the design and execution, clearly apparent once you point them out. So St Peter's is a magnificent achievement, but there is indeed room for it to be surpassed one day by something else.

Amazing explanation. One guide to the basilica once said that St Peter's is more of a monument to the papacy, than a traditional church, and I tend to agree. Even with its flaws, it transports that idea of the pope's power very well. That detail about Raffaello's School of Athens being inspired by the unfinished basilica was new to me. Great video. :)

i thought he clearly made the greatest contribution and was the first of men in his generation (as w/ respect to creative merit) but in time st peters continued on as a collaborative intergenerational project. as it stands today, (and as explicitly revealed in the video), we now enjoy the incomparable outcome in all its wondrous achievement! the talent of these men, the skill, the brute determination - ASTRONOMICAL!!! the video is outstanding for the way it shows this in a simple and lovely way, succinctly and w/ import. nicely done!

Most of the churches in Italy have the Latin cross plan, the Santa Maria del fiore in Florence, mentioned as the inspiration for the dome is made with such design and the dome in not visible if you stand close to the facade! So, “ruined” is just a bit of a strong word and an artistic opinion, to which of course you are entitled!😊
@Nivola1953
@Nivola1953 Год назад
For the non Italian speakers, the Latin wording on top of the altar makes more sense in Italian/Latin because Peter in Italian is Pietro which is almost identical to the Italian word for stone that is pietra! 🤓
@Nivola1953
@Nivola1953 Год назад
Just a nerdy remark, but at 0:31 the last word in the Latin phrase is “Vinces” that is [with this sign you will] win, the end “ces” is pronounced like in chess not like in chemical as the voice in the video.

Im currently studying architecture conservation in Rome, i've been countless times to the vatican, received many classes about the Basilica on the Basilica, I have searched and watched a fair share of videos, podcasts, read a ton about the different elements within San Pietro, even a full on paper on the Cathedra Petri. Yet this video helped me connect everything and understand way better the architecture, history and art of the Basilica di San Pietro. I had already watched a few of your videos but this one made you my favorite channel 😁. Im exited to see whatever other videos you are working on! I have only one random question that maybe you can help me solve. On the main altar on top of the Catedra Petri within the entablature, more specifically the frieze there are some greek letters. Do you know why or what does it mean?
@ManuelBravo
@ManuelBravo Год назад
Thank you for your comment, I’m glad you found the video useful. To answer your question, in the left side of the frieze there is the Latin inscription “o pastor ecclesiae tu omnes Christi pascis agnos et oves” which means “oh church’s shepherd you feed all of Christ’s lambs and sheep” the text is from the gospel of John which was originally written in Greek, so to the right the same thing is written in Greek.
