Malaska Golf // Your Right Hand & Controlling the Club Face - No More Pull Hooks

Looking at your right hand and how you use it to keep the club face square through impact will help you hit the ball straight constantly. In your backswing, the club face should be parallel to your spine angle, and at a 90 degree angle to your swing arc. This is not "closed" or "shut."
The club face shouldn't twist. This is where people get into trouble hitting pull hooks.

Shame that this guy is one of the few that teaches and explains the right way. I was taught along w many others the absolute wrong way to swing growing up. The flipping of the hands at the bottom of the swing is a borderline impossible way to play the game. Why on earth was I taught this way. Thanks for the great tip in this video makes so much sense and much easier way to play the game.

I took 20 years off of golf because of injury - started back practicing last year with pain gone. I figured this stuff out in the last few weeks on my own because I reverted back to my tournament tennis days and hitting my forehand and I kept thinking of DJ's & Koepka's swings (ie. the strong grip looks shut but exactly like my tennis forehand technique) . It is really shocking how incredibly wrong teachers were for the last 50 years and how easily it is to hit a ball repeatedly well using this technique. Start at impact, move the club back to parallel with the club face still aimed at the ball holding the club only with your right hand (repeat this 10,000 times and memorize your right wrist position). Move the club back to the top of the backswing and you will either have a 'closed' club face like DJ & Koepka or 'square' as shown here - pick one. If you simply practice these 3 positions holding the club only with your right hand to train your right wrist where to be - you will become a good ball striker in a few days - it's that easy. Then go figure out how to score well. Awesome video

Man, great video. I unfortunately figured this thing out myself last week. In my quest to use the similar motions from other sports (tennis, throwing a ball) it clicked. I took lessons and I was inconsistent striking the ball....I knew something was wrong. The golf swing had little in common with the other sport swings...I knew that was the problem. You nailed it. I just wish I didn’t have to wait to figure it out myself. I could’ve used this tip 10 years ago!

Love it...I also came from baseball and tennis. I never rotated my arms much but went to a pro recently and he had me trying to learn to rotate my arms more to roll the face open and then try to roll it closed. I cant seem to do that well. after seeing this I went back to my old swing with some other improvements and am hitting better. I wish teaching pros would do it they way I saw you do it when talking about the grip that is "neutral to the player"...and teach the swing that best fits the players natural tendencies.

This lesson shouldn't be free. It's priceless. It's been a tough transition for me, going from the sidearm throwing motion of the downswing, which in fairness allowed me to smoke the ball in my college years, to "getting the hands under the swing plane." But man, once it clicks, it feels great. Better on the back, and fewer "huge" misses.

This is brilliant Mike. I used these principals today after watching a bunch of your videos last night and had some real breakthroughs on the range. Definitely way less hook spin than I’ve had in a long long time and arguably, my right hand seems to be in a stronger position coming from the 80s era instruction. But I can’t deny the results. Thank you!

OMG: After 36 years of practicing endlessly, visiting a multitude of Golf Pro friends and others, running an on line golf shop with all the training aids and producing and hosting a Golf Television show, I have finally got the golf swing. Mike you are my savior. But let me say this, I have studied the golf swing like no other. And what I deduced, for a large percentage of right handed golfers, the left side becomes the dominant side, this in turn causes golf swing to become a difficult thing to master. This is where this video is a stand out, when you get the role of the right arm locked in correctly ; it's all over; all too easy! Mike you are the best, hope to see you Down Under for the Presidents Cup. Thank You so Much. John Lyons

I have struggled as a ball striker forevernand its exacerbated in wind-particularly left to right. My consistency is usually dreadful and usually bad miss to the right. You're explanation of what the right hand should do as opposed to what perhaps nearly everyone strives for in terms of forearm rotation(which i never seem to be able to achieve) is frankly a light bulb moment. I have practiced the last few days in left to right strong winds and now i can hold the ball against and back into it. Ive missed a few to the right but my goodness the confidence to give it a strike as i have started to retrain what my right hand does at impact is astounding! It sort of feels like the handle of the club is going backwards through impact.Thank you. I mean seriously-i was on the verge of ceasing to play golf.

I’ve watched just about every video in YT related to the golf swing. This is by far the best. Rolling your wrists over, cupping, bowing, it’s all bs. Simply line your palm up with the face of the club, during your grip and feel like you are spanking the ball off the tee with your right hand. It works. It fixed my incurable driver slice too.

I'm really surprised this guy doesn't have more subscribers. I started watching MM Golf on RU-vid about a year and a half ago. He just made sense to me. I decided to completely forget ALL the instruction videos I watched up until then. I went from an 11 index to a 6 (those 5 index point get tougher as you get lower) using his drills and listening to what he's saying about the golf swing. The swing has become a simple thing for me. I can't thank Mike enough for allowing me to play golf and not golf swing.

After over a year of working on Mike's ideas I finally found the key (for me). On a video with Brandon from Be Better Golf, Mike said "the heel of the club leads on the backswing and the downswing". This lesson was very helpful for me. It's taken me a long time to get a grasp of what happens to the right hand when going from club parallel to ground on backswing to top. It always felt to me that I was swinging up to a closed position. With your explanation about the shoulder rotation's contribution, I think I now get it and I am hoping that it's warm enough to get the range. I'm now going to be able to say good bye to excessive forearm rotations. Thanks.

persona250 that feeling your trying to explain is exactly right. I never had that feeling and would pull hook my irons all the time then this video and the same concept by Danny Maude showed me the light. When this is clicking my irons are unbelievably pure. But some days the feeling goes away. I just learned this technique and feeling so I’m praying this feeling will become more and more ingrained into my mind/swing. Gives a lot of hope to improve and shoot more consistently and lower scores.

Man is this a great video explaining how I played for years and years (since the late 1970's). About 4-5 years ago I took some lessons to help me learn to hit the ball on a lower trajectory. By the end of the first lesson the "teacher" was having me rotate and swing the club to "left field" and rotate the lower and mid core as fast as possible to the left while silencing the hands (mostly the right hand) as much as possible all while also limiting my lower leg movement. My handicap went from around a 2-3 up to 8-10 and some weeks higher. This fall after several frustrating years and injuries later I tried to give up that swing idea and feelings and have attempted to go back to just what youve stated in this video. But I feel now that Im in my late 50's in age Im pretty much shot at ever becoming the swinger of the club I used to be because of attempting to hold off and swing left for these past several years. Thanks for putting this information out there, I wish more instructors would do this. Any of you golfers out there been told this by the "new era" teachers...."you have too many moving parts in your swing, we have to limit youre movements so you have a better chance of repeating a swing"???. Well if you have, RUN AWAY FAST because youre going to injure yourself and the damage will be more then a physical one. Ty again for the video, glad I stumbled upon this site thru a Be Better Golf video you were in.
@MannyCamRS

Hey Brett....and to think, to hit the ball on a lower trajectory all you had to do was move the ball position in your stance and slightly de-loft the club. Malaska has a great video on this very same subject.

Finally I see it. As I tried to swing harder thru the ball I pull hooked more. I kept fight that my losing my grip and trying to swing down the line-but it kept coming back. Some times I never knew what the next hole would bring on bad day. Now I see that it was all wrong. We were all trying to "time" the closing of the club face-close at the top, the middle etc., so that when you reached the bar the face was "closed" to perpenticular to the ball. Now, you don't need to time-just swing.

Yep, sounds familiar. Personally I've no idea what my swing looks like but I sure know how it should feel. I don't even need to look at the ball flight to know whether I've hit a good or not so good shot, it just either feels right or it doesn't. I think we get stuck way too deep in the technical instead of the natural. I'm due to have my first lessons in 25 years later this month as a treat for my 50th birthday and before booking a coach I had a specific outcome I wanted to achieve in mind that he would need to adhere to. I told him I didn't need the prettiest swing in the world and I didn't need to be in 'all the right places at all the right times' in my swing but I did want a swing that was suitable, reliable and repeatable for me and enable me to be competitive in my monthly club competitions. Time will tell if our working relationship will be fruitful.

This method of "throwing" the club as opposed to holding it off or rotating your forearms has changed my entire golf game. I went from hitting 40% of GIR to 65%, I am hitting more fairways as well. I am still working on the timing of it to make sure I am not flipping at it, and sometimes still struggle with holding it off, but for the first time in my life, I feel like I know how to get the clubface square at impact.
