As having a good working heater is so important in Canada with it being so cold in winter I think this is one time when it is worth spending the money and getting a new one that is not going to go wrong in a few months time after all it is not a quick job to do.

Yes time is money - the blower is C$369

Two tips that some of you might find useful: 1) before spraying the WD-40 penetrating oil, get some Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) in there and, if you can, actually run the motor for several minutes. IPA is an electrical contact cleaner, so it's a partial refurbishment of the motor. You can actually "run in" and improve 12V electric motors by running them *submerged* in IPA, would you believe! 2) you may find that the blower heater unit has a wedge-shaped foam rubber gasket between the heater and the passenger bulkhead. This can make refitting the attachment bolts a pain, as you're trying to press against the foam rubber gasket while attempting to fix nuts-n-bolts. As I was about to give up on my solo repair, my Landy lost patience with me! She popped out that dummy air intake grill an the left side of the front wing. Looking through the hole it left in the wing, I saw it was a convenient place to insert a crowbar, to leverage the heater backwards while I got those bolts fitted inside the passenger side footwell. Job done. Anyhow, thanks for producing and sharing these videos. What did people do before RU-vid?
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 2 года назад
I now put captive nuts in the footwell where the bottom nuts and bolts should go - - now a one-man operation and a lot simpler!
@rickbear7249
@rickbear7249 2 года назад
@@BritannicaRestorations good idea. But I'm hoping not to be switching heaters too often. Your suggestion is probably also worth considering elsewhere on the Landy. Thanks

The Eberspacher heaters and their various copies (including Chinese) have the advantage of using on,y a tiny amount of fuel for a decent amount of heat. They don’t need the engine running, so save on engine wear, fuel and noise. Besides, the cabin heater overcools the engine at idle in temperatures of less than 10oC, so are not much use for stationary vehicles in Arctic conditions!

Had the same problem with the blower motor on my Series. I ended up taking the motor apart, cleaned it up, lubricated it and now it's fine. I'd put a snow cowl on that air intake to help limit the ingress of water and future problems.

Perfect timing! I’ve been contemplating this exact job but have been putting it off cause it’s summer and bloody hot and it’s a fiddle around to get the heater out. However, I want a working heater before it gets cold and this is the motivation I need to pull it out. It’s right hand drive with AC so those two little bolts at the bottom are what’s holding me up. Thankfully the AC is already disconnected.

Mike I've done a few of those type of heater blowers on old Jags and they've always needed completely dismantling to free up. The armature shaft journals need rubbing down with a bit of "wet and dry" paper, lubricating with a little grease and usually run ok after that. They rarely burn out easily even though they can be stuck for years.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 3 года назад
Problem is getting the plastic fan off without destroying it - the shaft rusts and expands the plastic - there is nowhere to pry it off - and if you warm it and lucky to get it off - then refitting is a nightmare as the shaft is now sanded down to get the cover off - you just cannot win! You could buy the fans separately but not any more

Actually when they are working and not plugged up, they are not a bad heater - the thing that lets then down is the coolant is not hot enough and they pull cold, ambient air in When Jim and I were out in my 130 last weekend to pick up some furniture it was like an oven in my truck - I draw the air in from the footwell floor and the Isuzu puts out more hot coolant than the Tdi - it was too hot on the second speed!

I've got an old 'Smiths' heater in my Series II cab, it's a larger rectangle one, probably military. I've seen smaller round ones too in other series vehicles. (It's a heater core / radiator in a box with a fan, goes in the cab, hooks to flow & return pipes from coolant system) Advantage: Can be placed wherever you have room in the cab. Disadvantage: There is no room in the cab to begin with... .. :D
@nickboylen6873
@nickboylen6873 3 года назад
I did exactly that and have a very good heater as a result. But it might be just as effective to recondition your existing blower (similar size, so probably similar airflow) and replace the heater matrix with new. Then just go around filling the holes in the casings, the lower fascia (usually got rust or screw holes from some accessory or bodged repair in the past), ensure the demister vent hoses are in place, the large grommets that seal the lower fascia to the demister hoses are in place, and replace the corrugated plastic hose from blower to matrix, as they get very brittle with age and split everywhere. On the water side, remove and clean out or replace the steel pipes along the head, the valve and various connections, and check the hoses. With good airflow, good coolant flow and correct control adjustment, they work pretty well for European winter conditions, even in a 109. The Defender type’s principal difference is how the temperature control works - it has an air diverted flap that directs the fan air through the matrix for full hot, around the matrix for cold, and wherever needed in between, while the SIII type has all air go through the matrix and the temperature control restricts coolant flow through the pipes. That means the Defender type responds more quickly to control changes, has less restrictions in the coolant pipes as is lacks the coolant control valve (also less likely to leak or seize), and can blow cold air faster as it is unrestricted by the matrix. But it is a bit of a faff to retrofit, mostly because of the blower intake position (won’t connect to SIII wing intake) and because you need to reverse the wiring polarity (simple enough).
