To think 6 months later he died, bless you Malcolm no ones perfect but ultimately you helped folk by inspiration and a lease of liberty freedom that people did not have without your encouragement & ideas, they know that deep down.

One of the best lectures I've seen. There is no youth culture movement because all the corporations have everything sown up. Individual vision has been crushed underfoot and homogeneity is allowed to thrive. We need another McLaren.

Reporting for duty. These pop culture leaders didn't go far enough they worked though corporations. The truth about the two great wars and modernity is hard to handle. The nazis made big money, and the winners from that racket run the big businesses of today. The authentic is inevitable.

"He arrived at the venue tired and short of breath, which you can hear during his talk. We thought it was just a cold. Days later we discovered he was unwell and then soon diagnosed with mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos many years earlier. Some believe this exposure occurred when creating the shop on London's Kings Road referred to during his talk." -Ted

I've read he was exposed by renovating his home shortly before he was diagnosed with mesothelioma. "A tumor of the tissue that lines the lungs, stomach, heart, and other organs. Cancerous (malignant) mesothelioma is the most common form, usually affecting the lungs."

@KRA3030 - "Why the hell does he talk so slowly?" Because he was old, giving a speech about an area outside his normal expertise, and about to die of mesothelioma. Too bad he didn't come with a cheat code, but thanks for proving his point. Your karaoke is calling you back, shoo.

@foiblebear yeah i am mixing with more people, but sadly even uni wasn't stimulating enough for me. No one wanted to question the validity of research, no one wanted to contribute or debate the knowledge they were being presented, everyone (my age) was very apathetic. I got along well with the teachers at least haha. I will try book clubs or a philosophy group sounds like something i need to do. If it wasn't for the internet, i'd feel even worse so thank Christ for it. and thanks for commenting

I'm only just learning about the sex pistols, it's an interesting story that's really changed the world we know today. What did he mean that the band was just a cynical marketing gimmick? I thought Johnny Rotten is a serious musician who writes good songs
@llengsuch3426
@llengsuch3426 3 года назад
Yeah, you've kind of missed the point. The point being: technical musicianship, expensive equipment, and experience was subordinate to youth, enthusiasm, and libido (energy plus sex). That was the magic formula that Malcolm recognised in Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, the early Beatles. That was what had become old, stale, and repetitive by 1975. Punk was about a burst of fresh, young, creative potential. It blew up, left a massive mark, and reverberated for a long time. However, the trappings of punk were quickly commodified and corporatised. For further info, I recommend you watch "bill drummond - the birth and death of punk", here on RU-vid.

I understand what he's saying, but resent the equivalence made between "karaoke" and "inauthentic"... Karaoke isn't always authentic, but people who believe karaoke is inauthentic: [1] believe in a very simply idea of authenticity (an absolute divide between authentic and inauthentic), and [2] have likely not sung karaoke enough to have the authentic experience you can have singing your guts out (and it IS a messy creative experience if you push honestly yourself)
