Stunning. He has no hesitation in answering these questions, and so eloquently. It's not about whether the sex pistols were "right" or "wrong". It's about freedom of choice or no freedom of choice.
Malcolm was using his Brit snotty voice which was simply perfect for the swindle...polite yet snotty. Now he may have actually been annoyed but sure as heck raked in the filthy lucre...just dead on. Amazing presence...true chemistry
Malcolm McLaren was a very shrewd guy. Apart from making punk a mainstream sensation, he had a huge part to play in getting hip hop recognised in the UK, a fact that has been almost totally forgotten. After visiting New York and seeing DJ's, rappers and breakers in the Bronx park, McLaren hired some of them and made 'Buffalo Gals' which got to number 2 on the UK chart in 1982. He knew how to sniff out alternative music that kids would enjoy because they knew their parents would hate it - if you know what I mean. Malcolm knew exactly how to tap in to the 'angry teenager' mentality.
He went to NY, learned about punk (going for three years at least), lifted it, went back to London and started the Sex Pistols, those 1 album wonders who couldn't play or sing. What a great contribution. Watch Pistol on Disney +. A true cultural vampire.
@@richardblock2458 Not interested in punk, it was shite, he kick-started hip hop in the UK. That wasn't his intention - he just wanted to make money, but such was the result.
Thomas brody sangster fucking nailed malcom mcclaren in the pistol series on disney+ its well worth a watch. The whole cast are phenomenal. Not a fan of the pistols music but I appreciate their story, the impact they made and the fuck you to the British establishment of shitty governments and shitty rich monarchs. Ive also come to like John lydon over the years the guy is a genius with great retorts👍
Yeah Pistol was really good, but the only thing that was bullshit was Steve Jones banging Chrissie Hynde. None of that happened! Sydney Chandler who played Chrissie is hotter than hell 🔥😍
@@camlee2341 It's based on his memoir and it's not a documentary. Chrissie was seeing & living with rock critic Nick Kent for over a year or so and never cheated on him,but he cheated on her apparently. Steve did have a very short relationship with Chrissie well before the Sex Pistols were formed and they still remain good friends. Steve has even been a temp-member of the Pretenders. Steve Jones has admitted that the scenes with Chrissie in Pistol have been sexed up for showbiz!!! Chrissie almost got married to Sid & Johnny(Not Steve.) for a visa, but called it off with Sid because he was in court for poking a guys eye out & I think Johnny called it off because feelings maybe involved...lol
You can debate the logic and morality of some of Malcolm’s points / arguments but what you can’t debate is that he was in fact very articulate and quite the provocateur. Very entertaining.
The managers made more then the bands - ripping them off beyond belief - the bands signed any contract put in front of them - on the other hand Robby Krieger from The Doors - his dad was a very successful engineer and had a best friend who was a skilled attorney and Robby's dad made sure his son and the other band members were not robbed blind - made a huge difference in their earnings and ownership of their work.
Malcolm McLaren has Become one of my hero's, when The Sex Pistols launched themselves in the mainstream media back in 1976 , I was only 14yrs, and to be honest, for a homely shy kid from Hackney Wick, East London, It was just to much for me to take in, it went Over my head. Years later I've learned to admire this pivotal period in British music and popular culture, and Mr McLaren was at the centre of it, he was a smart, inspired and could sniff out original, socially challenging art from a mile away. RIP Malcolm, your a true trailblazer!
In retrospect Malcolm McLaren was the only person talking sense to “The Establishment” at that time. The “revolting” image of the Sex Pistols was a media creation that backfired and Malcolm was smart enough to ride it for his own benefit!
In fact quite a good manger, articulated, smart, and clever..after all it was never to be like the rolling stones,40years latter.. after all one record and still relevant and listen to today ,from 1977
He was a rip off artist all he was interested in was money he started punk to sell the garbage him and Viv were selling in the shop didn't give a stuff about the music just exploit everything and get the most you can then when it's bleed dry move on he did nothing for the pistols John and Glenn wrote the songs the band played Malcolm did nothing but got lots of the credit he lost a lawsuit against the pistols to the tune of £250k each that was for royalties etc he stole the whole buffalo girls thing and then claimed it was all his idea he was a con man
@@markbarker6739 Actually he was the manager of the New York Dolls in the U.S. and they were probably one of the first punk bands as well as the Ramones & the Stoogies at that time, well before the Sex Pistols!! The garbage that him and Viv were selling in the shop is worth a small fortune now!
@@davejackson5741 he was ripping off the usa bands he wanted them as models to sell the shite viv was producing for the us market by managing the groups he could use them for cheap advertising he was a complete joke
The Pistols were as much of a manufactured boy band as Take That and One Direction. McLaren was the archetypal posh boy manager in the mould of Brian Epstein. Punk Rock was rubbish.
instead of the denying the claims that the band ever threw up on stage or spit at anyone, he comes up with a reason but both were urban myths and he knew it
Thats why you are here now TELLING us about it....or we could talk about how new kids on the block or bros rocked the WORLD of music,,,,"yes,,,,I heard mister motivater is gonna do a revamp of who KILLED BAMBI 🤣👌🏿💨💥💣🌋🌟💙👍🏾
That is too simple. Freedom of choice is a privilege that comes with responsibility. You would not hand a two year old a loaded gun because they are not mature enough to know how to safely handle one. You do not allow an immature preteen to go to a concert with entertainers who encourage immoral, depraved or even simply bad manners. Parents are given the supreme responsibility to raise and nurture a human being to face the world as strong, moral and mature as possible.
@@realsinisterminister And what has that to do with anything. Typical person whom does not listen and misses the whole point of the comment. Try to read exactly what I commented and stay on the subject at hand. If you want to talk morality as a subject, that is another matter. Your typical liberal answer is always to deflect, and then attack the person, usually with the usual tired old isms or ists instead of a meaningful discussion with agreeing or disagreeing points of view. In the end both adding to their knowledge, maturity, problem solving and resolving matters of importance or reinforcing, compromising even changing opinions. You know, the way intelligent, truth seeking individuals seek out and discover real answers to real or frivolous problems.
@@mvies77 I'm attacking your rambling moralistic bullshit that has nothing to do with the stance and attitude that made the stones the beatles and the pistols so important....
@@realsinisterminister The ONLY thing that made the Beatles, the Stones and all other great musicians is The MUSIC. Everything else they said in their life does not matter. They were great in their music prowess and even then, they sometimes messed with the lyrics to play with their listeners heads. They were just people whom have a trained or natural gift of playing an instrument, singing or writing songs. Beyond that they were simply people.
@This is 86 calling Control. Come in, Control... That’s not how it works for every punk. Ian MacKaye isn’t punk in the same way Sid Vicious was. There is no hard and fast rule for what is and isn’t punk. There’s grey area. You’re oversimplifying things. At its core, Punk is about the individual doing what they want.
@This is 86 calling Control. Come in, Control... You can believe what you like but you’re not convincing me the criteria is that rigid. Also you just made my point for me. You mention the early tenets and values of punk rock, but punk rock has evolved over the years; there are different factions of the genre with their own values/beliefs. Things aren’t the same as they were in 1977.lol
Where do you get your info? The Rolling Stones were cancelled because at their last concert someone was murdered. I know because I was there at Altamont. The Beatles were turned on when John said they were more famous than Jesus. All the drugs, sex and wildness was going bad. Rock stars were dying from overdoses left and right. And you are twisting my words so go spin on someone else. Who was? They were. So lay off.
Actually the Beatles WERE more famous than jesus at that time and like the Sex Pistols and the stones were turned on because of the truth 1 person died at a Stones concert as how many kids were being killed in Vietnam fighting a war that shouldn't of happened and could never be won? your "morals" have no balance or integrity these bands were banned because the truth hurts the fogeys who want to keep control.........your not intelligent you're a moron!
@@realsinisterminister OK, here we go. The Beatles were NOT more famous than Jesus and that was not what John meant. It was a lot deeper with a philosophical point as to their popularity as youth movement figureheads and the s whole social upheaval at the time, connected to the changing attitudes toward religion. Not necessarily against but actual change of views from church, pew, every Sun institutions, etc to personal seeking for the meaning of spirituality to religiosity. The first point which violently turned everyone against the war in Vietnam was the length. It was 15 years in when it could not be stomached anymore. The troop levels were also increased at that same time. No One could watch TV night after night seeing the increasing amount of body bags loaded on the planes for home. The Gen played at war with our youth. Instead of going in with everything, they played politics instead. The rock groups were always turned on when their carousing and drug use became too front page and in your face. Also, just a part of human nature, everyone whom becomes famous and well liked gets knocked down by the public whom becomes sick of them eventually. Then they climb back up.
@@mvies77 To teenagers they WERE more famous than jesus in the 60's so fuck off...you use so many words to say so little..........you're not intellectual your a blow hard and why the fuck are you even watching the Pistols?
@@mvies77 The Beatles were bigger than Cheeses, or any dairy product or whatever you want to call it, at that time. John Lennon’s mistake was speaking to a slightly deaf journalist.
