Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita said on Tuesday he was resigning and dissolving parliament, hours after mutinying soldiers detained him and top officials from his government. "I want no blood to be spilled to keep me in power," he said in a brief address broadcast on state television.
President Keita, Prime Minister Boubou Cisse and other top government officials were earlier detained by mutinying soldiers, worsening a national crisis in a country already grappling with a jihadist insurgency and mass protests. It was not immediately clear who was leading the revolt, who would govern in Keita's absence or what the mutineers wanted.
The mutiny came after months of political crisis following the fallout from Mali's parliamentary elections. In March, opposition leader Soumaila Cisse was kidnapped three days ahead of the first round of votes. On election day, the abduction of officials, trashing of polling stations and a deadly mine explosion marred the votes. The second round of votes, in April, was disrupted in the country's volatile north and central areas. Later, Mali's constitutional court overturned the results of some 30 seats, a move that was advantageous for 10 candidates in President Keita's party. In June, public anger at the government's handling of the elections spilled onto the streets in the capital Bamako. The June 5 Movement - Rally of Patriotic Forces, known as M5-RFP, have held further anti-government protests, with many demanding Keita resign. Fourteen people were killed during protests in July. Kati saw a mutiny in 2012 that led to a coup d'etat that ousted then-President Amadou Toumani Toure and contributed to the fall of northern Mali into the hands of jihadi militants.

Back in March 2012 I witnessed a military coup led by Captain Sanogo. People were happy. People were hopeful. People thought their time had come. The military preached for change. After the transition, IBK the now former president was elected. He promised to tackle among other things the security issues in the north of the country. He also stated that he was going to make our education his priority. He repeated again and again that he would fight corruption and unemployment with all his energy. The list goes on and on. That was in 2013. After this term he was reelected in 2018 for a second term even though it was obvious that he failed to deliver his promises. Yet, they elected him. It's worth pointing out here that there were protests after the results were made public. The leader of the opposition Soumaïla Cissé supported that the election was unfair. But when those protests died, IBK had a chance to rule again. Nothing has really changed. People are living in precarious conditions. There are many armed groups in the North and center of the country. Villages are burnt. Foreign militaries helping us and our own soldiers are killed almost at a daily basis. Unemployment is getting worst and worst due to a corrupt system. Education is quasi non-existent. The dissatisfactions among the people led to yesterday's coup. I'm not saying I'm against the coup, but for change to reallly happen my people should change their own selves. Unless we stop paying to get our degrees, unless we stop giving money to the police when we get stopped, unless we stop bribing our judges, unless we start working really hard to make our living, etc.this coup like the previous ones will not yield the expected outcome. My fellow Malians, let's change. Let's remember that we have the obligation to leave a better Mali to our children. God bless Mali 🇲🇱🇲🇱🇲🇱

Mali is not a country, like all African states, is a failed prison for many ethnicities, who are fighting for power or independence. Mali can be split at least in two countries to solve some issues(a berber Mali and a Mande Mali with minorities. You can't have normal administration, government or democracy in this conditions.

@Gulaid M Second-wave colonialism happened in the context of Britain and France during Imperiums; it did not occur to, say, Queen Victoria that Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England, & the channel islands should all be separate countries for long term stability, as ethnonationalism really wasn't a dominant thing yet. That caught fire _after_ the administrative lines were drawn, and it was not originally intended for these to be 'nation-states' in the Weberian sense. I submit that it is an error to assume that Western elites always know what they're doing.

I'm tired of France being blamed when anything bad happens in an african country. It is always France's fault if those countries are not developping, the french soldiers are here to loot the country ... But who really think it would be worth it for France to send 5000 men abroad to loot what ? what is there to loot in Mali ? The country does not even produce enough food for its own population, Mali is not even capable of exploiting their own natural ressource, the state is not even capable of controling its own territory... 5000 men cost France each year almost 1 billion euros which is almost 5% of Mali gdp. It is time for africans to look at themselves and stop blaming France to avoid being responsible for their own country situation.

I just had this thought, how Africa is a continent of superlatives: the fastest, the largest, the widest, the strongest, the most, etc., even in coups, but it doesn't seem able to exploit any of that to become the most successful, the healthiest or the most peaceful. What has independence done for the countries of Africa? They've gone from bad regime to bad regime, killer to killer. 😔
