Thank you for posting this, my power steering just went out! I couldn't find the resivour to check the fluid and I came across your video! You definitely make it look easy and I loved your step by step! I will be taking my car to the mechanic tomorrow, hopefully they won't charge me an arm and leg. Thanks again! ❤
The recall applies to early versions with a “White” steering wheel” position sensor so check online, but 09, 10, 11, 12 as 2013-16 has updated parts & software. With the upper steering column disconnected both wires & bolts, it slides off intermediate shaft / sleeve with assist components on it. The center tube captures the sensor and has a large snap ring the needle nose plies can dislodge or a set from an automatic transmission shop. After 38+ years, I have 26 different pairs of snap ring pliers. With wheels point straight, center tube off and sensor unplugged, there is a small snap ring that is in the center behind a felt noise seal. The sensor at eBay $52, Rock Auto $51 + S&H ($6-12 extra) both ACDelco parts. (Note; Some brands but from ACDelco and get latest part / if part is improved or more robust, sometimes other bands copy first design-so older type part) Just do your home work! GM dealer $99 and labor is not included nor re-zero by programming! DK, ASE master tech since 78.
I hate to say it, but replacing this electric steering was a WHOLE lot easier than replacing a power steering gearbox on a 60s-70s malibu, and easier than a power steering rack on a 90s car. This was clean and easy. But don't worry, I still love cast iron and chrome!
I bought an 08 malibu 3 months ago from a chevy dealership. On the 1st the power steering didn't work when I started the car. Dealership is charging me $550 for the diagnosis/repair. They told me the car already had the recall performed on it so I have to pay for it myself. The thing that sucks is that the recall/fix was performed in July 2015, so their fix didn't even last 3 years. If this happens again in a couple of years I'll have to try doing it myself. Really kicking myself for buying this car.
Dan,..Great how to video..I've enjoyed you're videos for a few years now and there very informative , funny at times . and I can relate to some of you're projects..I'm using some of you're tips as well...next weekend I'm going to Detroit Autorama ..should be a blast ...Tom from Michigan
thank you so much,I'll be tackling it for the wife tomorrow on her 04.I had a feeling it was pretty easy.I was a Ford a tech until a bad car accident rendered me unable to keep working but I still like doing my own repairs.
Good to see you fixing cars again! Kind of lost track of your various cars/projects. Any chance of an update?, is the Dinosaur still running? , what happened to the '63?
stupidest thing put in a vehicle ever.. and all makes and model brands have this crap. wats worst is now most new truck and nearly every car is pure shaftless steering and all electronic.. people dont realize specially for those who think this tech is cool and also having Wi-Fi.. atleast your car still has the steering shaft.. but... now most vehicles are not equiped with a shaft there simply pure wireless just like your gas pedals i wouldnt want a new car even if they gave me One hell no.. i want control over my vehicle.. not the ccompuer
Informative video. Anyone seen any videos out there that show the part being replaced? Or is it so easy that there’s no need to show the actual bad part being swapped? My wife’s car has started having these same symptoms so I fear I’ll be doing this repair in the near future
@@rogeliosegovia7427 My malibu drives like floating on ice and lots of play in the steering,, so my issue may be different, but what were your symptoms. Trying to figure it out landed me on this vid. Any insights? Thanks in advance!
That's why when there is a set of parts like wheel bearings, a smart man would just replace all four at.tje same time, then you won't have to worry about one of the other 3 breaking and the tire will go whizzin past you...seen it happen to many times
Thanks Dan. There are so many of these on the road. How does this Malibu run otherwise with all those miles on it? I've heard good and bad about these cars.
Will this fix the problem when you get messages saying POWER STEERING, SERVICE ESC, ESC OFF messages? My power steering just stops working and have to deal with manual power steering? And how much was that part? Please answer soon thank you so much for putting up a video
I bought mine on Amazon for $120.89 and free shipping. It was the lowest price I could fine and it's a GM part.GM Genuine Parts 23232310 Steering Shaft Torque Sensor.
I have a 08 Malibu and it’s got this problem I believe. Mine starts by shaking while parked very rapidly and then once I start to drive it will just stop working completely. Can you confirm on anything I said that was the same that happened to your car??
I drive an 06 model. Whenever I make slow sharp turns the steering wheel becomes stiff and hard to maneuver till I turn the car off and restart the engine. Then the steering wheel works again until I make another tight turn. Would the process be similar?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. I just changed power steering motor on 2009 malibu steering wheel turning all the way to the left . Help please
FYI... these Malibu cars have what Chevrolet calls a "special coverage" when it comes to these Malibus. On the power steering itself they have coverage of 150k miles or 10 years of warranty for the power steering and I know this because mine got replaced at no charge. I had to call corporate and complain and thats when i found out about this "special coverage"
Mine just started having steering problems I been calling to get them to fix it but they keep asking for the last 8 digits of vin# and then they say that the car is not on recall I'll keep trying maybe get corporate number n call them also
Makes me love Toyota even more. Typical GM. The last Malibu had all kinds of steering/suspension problems too, takes GM 10 years to resdesign a defective part.
I am to lazy of a mechanic to rip out the whole assembly, all these young whipper snappers have the energy to take more things apart than you need to. I leave the lower half with the sensor in the vehicle and centered the wheel before disconnecting the battery and pulling the upper steering wheel half out. Surprisingly the factory sensor from the dealer did not get any complaints from the computer and it worked fine after the install. No scanner was needed for me.
