James wan said in an interview that when he made saw everyone called him torture porn guy then when he made conjuring everyone called him jumpscare guy so he wanted to do something different a campy 80s VHS movie with an old italian giallo mystery feel ... He along with his wife pitched the idea and twist to the writer akela cooper and she wrote the screenplay .... I really enjoyed it and the experience gets better on repeated watch ...

Oh it's definitely Giallo, for sure. I really enjoy this, it was a roller coaster for the entire ride. My favorite part so far has been getting other people to watch it, going in blind of course. And then that initial text afterwards: "WTF did I just watch?"

Me being a fan of James Wan ever since the Saw movies to Insidious and finally The Conjuring universe, this was definitely outside of the box for me! I expected a demon or malevolent possessions but this was so different and ingenious that I was hooked from the beginning. Being also a medical student I should have figured out the title Malignant from a cancerous tumor. I have always loved James Wan and he never once let me down with a good classic horror movie. I loved The 3rd Conjuring movie and that really did scare me to the bone but Malignant shook my core raw! I loved and enjoyed every single moment of it. It was different and overall clever to think of "what if" scenarios when it comes to rare medical conditions. I did end up learning about parasitic twins and how they aren't conscious of their surroundings or what is happening to them which makes sense medically and fictionally whereas here in the movie James made it turn out to be a "what if" a parasitic twin WAS concious of its surroundings and was an evil bitter being for not having independence. THAT'S what made this movie so good for me!

Malignant definitely isn't for everyone. Wan put together a film that was a culmination of 80's horror where he drew inspiration from Wes Craven(the villain and his unique weapon), David Cronenberg(body horror), John Carpenter(atmosphere and widescreen photography),Dario Argento(definite giallo style sprinkled in with the use of color), and Henenlotter(Basket Case to be exact). The tone took on the form of cheesy, bordering on camp that also reminded me of the at times oddball nature of Argento's films. Even the music is like a mixture of old school 80's with a giallo flavor. If you're not hip or fluent in any of that, then chances are you're not gonna jive with it at all. I loved Malignant and am not turned off by any of the flaws. Wan showed some balls, something severely lacking in today's cinema. He dared to "take it there", to be bizarre, and offbeat. This is gonna be a cult classic for sure. Love it or hate it, no one can say it wasn't remarkable. It's memorable. I'd rather watch a flawed movie that takes chances, than a competent movie that is safe and utterly forgettable.

The first time I saw this I was on two hits of acid and it took me about halfway through the movie to realize it was funny on purpose, they're just flawlessly delivering a straight face the entire time with the acting. James Wan's made so much money for Universal he's gonna be able to make any movie he wants to for the rest of his life, he's a legit weirdo and genuine weirdness is hard to come by at this level of budget in Hollywood. I can't wait to see what he does next.

New to your channel; I love seeing the growth of LGBTQ+ horror creators as we’re often underrepresented in the horror fandom. That aside, it’s your genuine reactions that made me subscribe. Malignant is easily my favorite film of the year! What a unique experience for modern audiences (a lot of people compare it to the cult movie Basket Case, but those movies were a loooong time ago so I think it’s safe to say this is unique for modern, mainstream audiences). James Wan never disappoints for me.

I know I commented this on a different video but you mentioned wanting to watch something actually scary and I don't know if you've seen it but The Night House starring Rebecca Hall (2020) fits that bill in my opinion. If you haven't seen it I recommend going in blind as the trailer gives away some good parts. There is a feeling of uneasiness throughout the whole film and also some epic jumpscares. I was genuinely freaked out and i watch so much horror that its hard to scare me. Also one of the only times I have not been able to predict what's going on.
