First- it’s never a good idea to pet a police dog because they’re trained to only get rewards when they earn it, so petting them or giving them attention could mess up their training a little. Also then again, like he said there are exceptions. We have a retired police k9 Belgian Malinois. My dad trained him, more like fixed his previous training from his previous owner, and made him a FANTASTIC drug dog. He worked excellent in the field and was still not unfriendly- just didn’t really like little kids. When it came time to retire (he became blind in one eye) he transitioned WONDERFULLY into the more pet dog environment. He was my dog at that point haha. Super friendly, loves his ball, will do anything for it, but also loves us. But the dog he had before that was more aggressive. Worked super well in the field but wasn’t as friendly, loved me though- guess I have the touch
Oh yeah, we also have a female who we rescued, also trained up from the beginning as she was incredibly stubborn and had no former training. She’s super energetic. Never stops wanting to play even thought she’s like 9 now. They’re great even together though. Each dog is going to be different depending on how they were bread and how they’re trained and treated.

They go home with the police at the end of the day and get lots of affection and treats from the kids and the wife. just like any dog you give them extra praise and rewards when they do what you wanted them to, but if you think you should never pet a dog unless they did a trick, then I don't know what to say
My german shepherd is a retired K-9 unit officer. He’s still alive and doing well. When I first got him he was really crazy and I didn’t think I could get along with him, but after realizing that he had a lot of anxiety. Just like I do, I learned to accept him, and love him, and now, he’s just like me. We both have anxiety and we cope together. I couldn’t imagine life without him now, and German shepherds are now my favorite dog. Love em to death❤
I’ve got one and I’m thinking of getting another one, Belgian malionois have the highest drive but if you can control that you can keep them as a family dog, for example my dog is at his best round the kids
IDK man I have 2 and they're both incredible dogs. Yes they're active but they are also very protective over my family. Both incredibly smart and very gentle with kids. Now rough housing with me is another story, they think I can take the beating which I can but you need to inbed an off switch through training. They're very responsive to you if they are trained right.
I've had both . I prefer German shepherd because they're 100% all around all purpose dog. They're high energy when it's needed and big cuddle bug's also. And everything in between.
I've had German Shepherds all my life, and currently have 4. I'd rather deal with 20 Shepherds at once than one Malinois. Not that they're a bad breed......I'm just not the right person for them. My shepherds are high energy, but after their morning run, they're calm. The Malinois doesn't seem to have an off button......ever. I'd need zanax if I had to live with them. 😂
Dude, you’re beyond right. We rescued ours as a BABY not knowing what he was. The first 7 years of life were really hard. He’s 11 now ans has chilled out more. Finally. 😂😂😂. Energy for DAYS
@@LoVE.B. he was a rescue. He was left in a dumpster behind pet smart. In August. It was 115 degrees where we live. He was only a couple weeks old. We got him a couple weeks after he had been rescued from the family that was fostering him.
Mine is reaching a year old, she goes on a mile run every morning i swear when were going home she seems tired and then we walk inside and shes ready to go again.
Was on the fence regarding both these breeds but after seeing this, I went with another GSD female pup. Obedience training, crating and house breaking have all gone well. She's smart, fun, lovable, playful, goofy at times and has that off switch most GSD owners talk about. Love her to pieces!
We got a baby malinois - he was a rescue. Had no idea what he was till he grew up. He was literally a week or two old. They told us he would be like 15lbs 😂 he was found in a trash bin behind a PET HOSPITAL! Anyway, he terrified me as he grew up. I was scared of my own dog for a time. We had to her a police trainer in. He ran out the door every time someone came over, DESTROYED my brand new home ate walls, baseboards, tables, carpet... I was so done. He would bring me dead triantulas as peace offerings when he was bad as a puppy 😂😭 One day, my 6month old baby was crawling out of my bathroom as he was laying near the door. (He was 1 year old at this time. The dog) I was a new mom and trying desperately to shower. I had soap in my hair running down my eyes, was about to jump out to get her and just before I did, our dog stood up, calmly laid down across the threshold of the bathroom to block her in. He always laid under her swing and crib, anywhere she was he was. That moment I knew he was our dog. We trained him and realized the exercise he needed every day to not destroy our house and we did it. That little girl is 10 years old now and that dog is quite literally the best dog I have EVER met in my LIFE! He has been the best family dog for us. He has been an incredible guard dog, he is a fantastic judge of character, he is 11 now and still runs like a freaking puppy. He saved our boxer from a pit bull attacking her at the dog park years ago. Ran full speed from across the park the moment he realized she was in trouble. He jumped on that dog and got him off our boxer girl in the blink of an eye. I’ve never seen him so focused. His agility and athletic ability are incredible. I almost feel bad that he never got to be a military dog bc he’s just so amazing. Nothing spooks him. You can slap a whip 3” from his face and he doesn’t flinch. He’s been the best to our family and we love him so much. I’m so grateful we found him and rescued him. Best family dog I could have ever dreamed of. After training, of course. Lol
Oh my gosh, I had tears in my eyes reading your story, it’s so incredible and I can relate. The part about being thrown in the trash behind a vet hospital is just appalling. Thank you for sharing it, it brought back memories. We had a huge, male German Shepherd that scared me half to death when I first met him but he immediately took over babysitting my young daughter. He did it so well she wasn’t allowed to go outside to play unless Max was with her because we lived on a fairly busy road and she was so tiny and pretty I was afraid someone would try to steal her. That dog would let babies crawl all over him one minute then scare the living daylights out of anyone who knocked on the door. Still miss that boy but now I have the best rescue GSD girl with so much drive we play and train all the time. I would love to learn beginner French Ring but between me getting to be an old lady and her having been in 4 homes by 18mos old, I doubt we’ll get that far but we’ll have fun trying 😂
Huge amounts of respect for the control you have with these dogs... Love that you allow them to interact/play but also have the ability to stop anything further, even without physically separating. Enjoy these videos and watching you interact with dogs. Fantastic job

I can tell from the look in my mali's eye when she is at full nut level and needs to go outside and run. God, we love this dog. She is the craziest, funniest, most loving dog we've ever had.
Hahaha That's how ours is as well. We need to get rid of all his chewing toys when he's inside otherwise he will keep pushing it against you and the moment you engage slightly to "rough" in his play he will go from zero to 100 within seconds and there's just no stopping. Usually when we finally throw it outside he will drag his blanket out of his crate (he still sleeps in it even though he's almost three years old now, he loves it) and starts to either wrestle with it by himself or push that against us😂. When we walk him he keeps pushing our scotties to get start playing with him, luckily our 8 year old male really likes to do so albeit for a couple of minutes before he gets too tired, he's not quite on the same energy level as our Malinois😂 The moment I put on my specific leather jacket to start fighting with him he will get that "crazy Micheal myers" look in his eyes and thing can get really rough😂 I've got scars on my arm because he chew straight through the leather right into my arm. He does listen when I firmly tell him to back off. Our house would be so much more boring without our beloved 4 legged friend.
I am from Belgium and always have 2 mâles working dogs and it is the first time i hear sommebody how knows what he is talking about.Also the working Malinois if you want to buy him you need a very good breader and he will never sell a working dog when you are not known and proves that you can handle these dogs .The problem is the bad owners who think they can handle this dog.You also never go on holiday whithout your dogs they always stay with the handler so me and my son was only allowed to walk with the dogs alone when he was 18 years and trained since he was born.Yes my son was trained to handle these dogsso he could react in the good way.When the malinois is not dooing what i ask my reaction what did i do wrong not the dog is wrong.Just one thing we have the show malinois and the working malinois.The show malinois is much softer becouse the judge must be able to touch the dog and they can be good family dogs with the right owner and they are not so heavy duy to the standard.Most working malinois are heavier and stronger and do not match the standard weight and maximum higt.Best regards from Belgium
I almost acquired one Malinois but I opted for two German Shepards instead. These dogs most definitely keep me in top shape and I’m glad I have them to keep me safe in the forest.
Mine both keep me safe on off leash ...not a protection dogs ...but don't tell them that they both have protected me and family and act that way normally...they both aren't a goof they are with me ..but when I load them up ..on duty
Being a first-time Malinois owner I don’t think I could ever own a different breed of dog… Maybe I’m neurotic LOL but I love the high energy; my client who is a disabled Air Force veteran has two German Shepherd‘s and part of my caregiving is to play with his dogs… I get bored. They play and then they’re done whereas with my male, he doesn’t stop until it’s bedtime. That’s just my preference tho.
Just for your information, there are German Shepherds specifically bred for medium or lower drive to be service dogs. That is an entirely different animal from a true working line High Drive German Shepherd. Indeed, the Malinois still has a higher intensity in terms of drive then even the high drive working German Shepherds generally speaking, exceptions to every rule of course. But trust and believe that a real working line German Shepherd, not these mutant show Shepherds or service dogs, will have all the drive you need and plenty of energy. Only difference is they are generally more serious dogs, and obviously they are slightly larger with larger heads. Unfortunately the German Shepherd is so popular that there is a huge variation in the breed. I would only ever get a high drive working line German Shepherd. Intense powerful and serious dogs

@@luxyvip yes. German Shepherds are so popular unfortunately there are so many different lines and types. Pet lines, show lines, working lines. And then within each line there are variations. If the Mal continues in popularity it may suffer the same fate as the shepherd. I personally prefer the high drive working line Shepherds from Czech or Slovak lines. They are just as high drive as a Malinois only they are less neurotic. This is not an insult to the Malinois. The Malinois actually has a genetic propensity for neuroses in their genome. In general, and I'm only talking about working lines, not pet or show lines, German Shepherds tend to be a little more serious of a dog but a well-bred working German Shepherd has all the drives, stamina, and endurance. The primary reason the Malinois is used for military application more and more is because of their shorter coat which is better for a desert War environment. Incidentally, most of the military line or police line Malinois are usually Dutch and Mal mixed with a little bit of Shepherd somewhere back in the lines to add more size and strength. Also Mals/Dutch tend to be slightly smaller and lighter, which lends to better agility but also is better when having to carry a dog in a military application. Also, because they have not been over bred like the shepherd (due to their popularity) they tend to be healthier in general. This is not to say there are not extremely healthy working German Shepherd. It's simply a numbers game. There are fewer Malinois in the world and because of the lack of over-breeding and inbreeding, there is more genetic diversity and health which equals fewer vet bills for government contracts. Working German Shepherds are still much preferred for personal protection. If you go buy a real personal protection dog, they will almost always recommend a working German Shepherd. Better for close-quarter combat and have the off switch needed to live and guard a person and home. Shepherd are still used in the services and the police force. But as for PTSD or other service dog, there is a specific type of working Shepherd for this and that is much different than a high drive working Shepherd. They are purposefully bred to be less dominant, less territorial, & with lower drives.
I understand that there are genetic variations naturally within a breed... but not to the point where it nearly makes them a wholly different dog altogether - such as "designer breedings"! Most natural breedings will have a combination of a pet quality - with some more/less aggression - but not as much as a "protection" oriented pup would present. But even protection pups can be excellent "pets" as well. What's concerning to me is that show breeders specifically breed out natural traits to 'create' a "show quality" dog. Then they show them - not as they typically (with healthy/diverse genetics) are, but an altered (docile, "dumbed down") version. Then uneducated people watch these show dogs in action and then go out and buy them with a total wrong representation in their mind of what the breed actually is supposed to be! Especially protection and guardian breeds!! Or heck, even the small breeds that normally hunt vermin, don't act the same in a "show line" of breeding as they do with their breed's natural/diverse genetic makeup. All these "mutant" variations (or to be politically correct: "designer breeds") are confusing to a lot of new dog owners, because what one genetic line represents may be completely different in most cases than what they actually go out and purchase. Then they wonder why "their dog" is a mutant and doesn't fit the "show bill". lol On the other hand not all "natural breeders" take the time to evaluate their breed stock and classify them as "pet" vs "working" vs "show" 'quality'.... And even breeders that do so, it's very hard to see any of that actually manifest until the pups reach a certain age (keeping in mind, popular breeders have their litters spoken for before the pups are even BORN). Some breeds, however, take longer to mature - and thus longer than 8 weeks (standard/minimum adoption age) to manifest such behaviors that would clue the breeder into what classification they will 'fit best.' Dog breeding in general has gone far beyond the natural breed genetics... And I think that's where the "pure breds" come under fire. That's a whole other topic of discussion, tho. lol I don't like designer breeds, because there's always genetically something missing from their natural DNA that keeps them ALL-AROUND healthy. Some of what may be considered "undesirable traits" may also be linked to key genetics that keeps the breed HEALTHY. Science... Greatest achievement or worst disaster? lol
Show lines doesn't even look that pretty. They look oddly shaped, and i can't help but feel disturbed at how strange they look. I have a working line dark sable German Shepherd, and i love him. He's my whole world. I'd NEVER, and i mean NEVER ever get a show line. I don't want to support that at all.
@@bbsweeper I keep and breed African Cichlids and unfortunately humans are destroying all types of animals with bad breeding and what we in the fish hobby call "line bred" Instead of bringing in wild caught to add to the gene pool, they stick with the same group, breeding and culling just for certain traits and we in the fish hobby,as you just explained, many no longer resemble their wild cousins, yet some think just because they are not "hybrids" per se, that there is nothing wrong with it and yes as crazy as it sounds, it also creates a huge health problem.
A lot(not all) of breeds have been destroyed via the American show lines, but I do own German Shepherds from West Germany show lines. The temperament on them has been amazing!

I am the proud owner of a Malinois I am truly amazed daily an we r in love with Deniro she is female an gorgeous! She learns so damn fast! Faster than any human in every way fast becoming my best friend from the moment I saw her! Gentle, intelligent, listens, never violent very gentle with small dogs. I love her so much.

We just got a 1.5 yr old male Mali as a rescue/hand-me-down. We are were his 7th "home" in 5 months, after he was found tied out in a filed and taken to a shelter. He is high energy, neurotic, and very smart. We still have some challenges, but Max found his forever home.

I have same and he's the best and smartest dog Ive ever owned. At 8 1/2 mos. old he knows 20 commands and can learn something new in like 5 minutes. I watched a video of a mal jumping up a wall off a guys back. ya 5 minutes mine was doing it on command. amazing dogs. I do not recommend with children under about 10. My daughter is 8 and it can be hard at times. Its a love hate relationship. He has never bit her but his play grab is HARD and she cries when he goes for a sock or her shirt sleve.
Thanks. Good explanation of the breed. I have had many dog breeds growing up from childhood. Small and larger breeds. When I was in my late teens and first out on my own I had the chance to acquire an almost one-year-old German Shepherd. She was a rescued dog. Quite abused. Even though that had its own issues by the time she was three I don't believe she retained any memories from that time. She got lots of love and attention sometimes I would have to as you say correct her. But never long-lasting and always back to love acceptance and exercise( playtime) I had two friends that trained Labrador bird great dogs. They used many hand signals etc. When they were just messing around they would allow me and my dog to join them. After a while, they told me I should put her in for some competitions. I never did but she sure could hold her own against my friends labs and it was great fun. She was a great family friend when I got married and started to have children. But that was short-lived she passed as a great friend and family member and protector at, 13. My next Shepherd was when my youngest was 5 years old. She was also a Cherished member of the family. However there was only two people that she would take commands/ requests from without hesitation, me or the oldest child my daughter. Those two were the best of friends. I think they both looked out for each other. I never had to worry about either of them when they were together. Agan with the fondest memories after 14 years. I have never had another dog of my own since. I find it too emotional when they pass. Silly right.

One of the best videos regarding both breeds! Couldn't agree more, I also do hate that people focus so much on the general traits of these dogs and glad you clarified it! I have 2 GSDs knowing it wouldn't be fair for a mal as I am no way in shape or form as neurotic or active for em haha. 1 GSD has a VERY intense neurotic drive for EVERYTHING whereas the other one just wants to chill on the bed and steal the other ones toys only after she plays with em and ask for chest scratches lol.
I have a Malinois Akita X. She is the most chilled pup I’ve ever come across. Really friendly and loves to play but happy just to lay around the house as long as I’m around. The thing I got from your video is how sensitive Malinois are, even a X breed, she doesn’t like being told off and will huff after, kinda cute at this stage.

Dutch shepherd has a lot of similarities with malinois, because of WWII they almost gone instinct so they used Belgian Malinois to diversify their gene pool

great video. I never heard about the neurotic gene, but it explains a lot. after a life-time of GSD's and heath heat-breaks, I got my first Mal almost 12years ago. She is also my first female. - just a spectacular dog: presented a lot like yours in the video, but the breaded told me: "do NOT worry about drive: it's in there, just waiting. instead, worry about balance and confidence and control. if you stoke the drive on a young Mal, you're gonna end up with a race car that s all engine and no brakes and no "off" switch." She's got more drive and endurance than I could even fully use and is also the most solid, predictable, reliable dog I've ever met. I feel like I got lucky, but I also don't see myself owning a different breed after this one. anyway, thanks for the video and puppy play - 2 really nice looking dogs you have there...
LOL. This video had my 2 year old DDR GSD paying attention, with the “HEY” and “ENOUGHs.” Those are two key commands I use! 😂 She would look at me, as if to say “WHAT?”

Other breeds are better than the GSD in some categories but the GSD is better overall because they are good in EVERY category. (Except shedding) just my opinion but the GSD is the #1 breed
@@jesuisunepommedeterre4662 my current GDD dosnt seem to shed nearly as much as some others but then again he is only 9 months old. I have looked into the raw diet a little bit but it just seems like it's really easy to mess it up.
Just stumbled on your video and I have had GSD all my life and have just taken in a half GSD half Mal … she is just turning 3 months and already sitting for food etc and we are about to start leash training etc and I am excited to see what’s she is capable of .. wish me luck 😂

@@diggikeyzmemphis2988 Check out the most recent DNA evidence for dog breed relatedness. They are not closely related at all. GSDs are split off with a small handful of breeds including the Berger Picard, while the Belgian shepherds sit in with the bulk of European breeds.
Do on you believe a highly suspect DNA "project" with 65 total animals & I believe only 4 gsds from lord knows where because that has not been identified or do you believe more than 100 years of written records kept by the Germans, Belgians and the Dutch. As a owner of GSDs for more than 55 years, I know which one I believe. The "continental" herding breeds are Gsds, all 4 varieties of Belgians and the Dutch Shepherds and they came out of the same root stock.
Just found this channel. Couple of things. Thank god someone is teaching me how to walk my dog on a loose leash (another video I just watched). She's a German Shepherd mix that is allegedly terrier and walking her is a nightmare. I've got the electric buzz collar but the video on how to use it is hopefully going to be helpful. I will be getting a prong collar as well, she's four and for the first six months of life before we adopted her she spent her time in a cage at home while everyone was at work and was never once put on a leash. That coupled with me not really knowing what to do, we now have a lovely dog inside that's a nightmare outside. Second thing that's just a silly thing, listening to you talk I could immediately tell you were Canadian, we can spot each other in a crowd apparently. The snow helped as a hint for confirmation.
I have a GSD/Belgium Malinois & he is interesting. I love my GSDs, new with the Maligators. So far so good. Definitely different personality between them. My Jaeger is very energetic and "on" all the time. He's only half Maligator, dad is a K9 officer. Mom is GSD working dog. The biggest difference is his energy. He doesn't stop. So we do lots of work. He's almost 10 months old & to be fair still a puppy. I think he inherited the Malinois personality & color with the GSD obedience. He's pretty forgiving. I can't say how the rest of his siblings turned out, but he's definitely a good boy. Loves riding in my Semi truck & being engaged with whatever we're doing.
Great information. Thanks for another great video, Haz. Very consistent with what I've heard other experts say. I'm obsessed with both these breeds having a working line GSD myself as my first dog but I'm sure a Mal is too much dog for me.
Where would you put the Dutch Shepherd into this mix? I used to have one many years ago in the 90's that I got from a pound sold to me as a GSD x Bully. Only around a year ago I found out that I had a pure Dutchy. Brilliant dog, wish I had RU-vid in those days so I could have done him better justice, but he made up for my lack of knowledge. Big drive and intensity, but also gentle as a lamb with people. He wasn't trained as a working dog, just my companion and guard dog. Did both jobs very well. I can see a bit of both, GSD and Malinois in his temperament. Hope to get another one one day, when the time is right.
I think it would depend on what line the dutchie is from. A herding line dutchie is calmer and less neurotic than a mal, but is more high strung then a GSD. A police/military line dutchie is basically a brindle colored mal.
You finally said it... I've been sayin it for a while now: Malinois is like a Dodge Viper - You either have a handle on it and know how to manage the HP and torque to prevent tail whip - or you're gonna wreck it - and regret it - hard. LOL That's funny to hear someone else reference that. I have a sable GSD female, 20 mo old. She has foundational protection training - in CZECH language... I, however did not know the language well, even though I studied before I decided to purchase her. I knew fundamentals of "universal training language" - but we weren't at the same level with each other I figured out.. She is fairly forgiving with me - has much patience, however, she also has tendencies to "Act out" if I slip and get frustrated (that's totally on me). When trainers and/or breeders tell you - "you need to be experienced with these dogs" - they are NOT JOKING! (Mal's AND GSD's). I don't regret my decision to purchase a GSD at all - I only regret the timing, and not going through proper training for MYSELF before purchasing. I THOUGHT I had enough experience - I was wrong. However, the breeder I bought her from recommended, based on my level of experience that I work with this particular female WITH a professional (competent) trainer. The breeder explained the same thing as you - pertaining to Malinois vs GSD. I concluded I was nowhere near being ready to handle a "VIPER".... I had training setup and had a few sessions - then CVD19 hit and everything got shutdown. So, I've been watching RU-vidrs like YOU to get some good insight and advice - a "second opinion" if you will than just relying on one breeder/trainer. I've learned a lot that I didn't realize I needed to know - I've received confirmation in many things I had an instinctive feeling about - and I've enjoyed watching your videos in general. Thank you! You have a pragmatic approach to training - as well as general dog behavior - and it has helped me frame my approach to handling and training that has made it MUCH smoother! We had a Female Malimois dog that was very smart, alert, courageous and friendly. I am so sorry for not learning about professional dog breeding principles. She had ten puppies twice a year with the neighborhood stray dogs. We should teach dog breeding in all public schools to prevent such mistakes. Nobody told me about "Dog Breeding" books.

I've got a husky who comes from working lines instead of show lines. One of the differences that I have seen (other than the coat length) is her extreme loyalty. I can off leash her easily while other husky owners who have huskies from the show lines have more of a difficult time
I just bought a 11 month Belgian Malinois , on its 2nd week with me it is showing territorial instinct already. I used to breed GSDs. Malinois are more agile and have more energy but they are destructive if you leave them alone.
At a recent dog show, I once talked to a breeder about getting a Malinois. He told me that in order to be happy, these dogs need a job. I told him that’s exactly why I didn’t want a Border Collie, because it just didn’t seem fair. We have had a series of rescued German Shepherds ever since and they have been wonderful.
The first time I saw a Belgian Malinois, I was about 2005, driving through a border check point about thirty miles outside of McAllen Texas. They asked a few questions, checking us out. Enthused, I asked what kind of dog is that? He did answer my question. Then he stated sternly that he was asking the questions.

Yes! My thoughts exactly! It has happened with all popularized breeds like pits and rotties... if the demand gets high bad breeding starts and then bad behaviors mark the breed as bad forever
A friend of mine was considering getting a Dutch Shepard, I warned him to reconsider because he's hardly got any experience with dogs and lives alone with heavy work commitments! Needless to say, it's not working out great for him! A lot of issues with it trying to attack other animals and property destruction! I recommend at the time he should of got a cat!!
i got a half pit, half Australian shepherd. and i love her goofy ass. shes really smart, just having a hard time breaking her of jumping on everyone she sees. she learns things on her own all the time. ive always wanted a 'protector' dog to some degree and ive observed her (on her own learning) while we sleep she stays up and guards the door to the bedroom while playing with her favorite ducky squeek toy quietly. and while we are up she will get her rest then. I absolutely love this about her. she learned to shake, high five, low five, and fist bump after just a couple of attempts.
I’ve had GSDs, and my family has, my whole life. I now have two and my first Border Collie. The Malinois sounds a lot like what people say about BCs. I would call myself very knowledgeable on GSDs but only have experience with one BC. However, my experience with my own BC, as long as you understand the dog and respect their intelligence and need for stimulation then you won’t have any problems. I don’t even have to do much with my BC, it’s little things like he has a boomer ball that he gets aggressive energy out on in the backyard. He and my GSDs get a nice long walk of 60-90 minutes daily where they run off leash, chase each other, explore. And the have each other for company. They are NEVER CAGED. And in my case they aren’t home alone very often. Which I know isn’t doable for everyone as people work but people should not have any of these breeds in a home where nobody is home all day every day. It needs to be a situation where they aren’t home alone daily more than maybe 6 hours. It helps to give them a companion. If you exercise them and give them lots of natural dog chews in different textures then they won’t be destructive and you won’t need to cage them. IMO caging causes MORE behavioral problems and anxiety.
Ive noticed some more differences when encountering wild hogs my malinois already knew way more fast something was going on and went into attack modus while my german shepherd was just doing his thing and sniffing intull the wild hog planned to come after us and than he also went into attack modus and the wild hog backef off but was still waiting behind a three to attack us and my malinois was still alert and ready to attack when my gsd already lost interest and went back sniffing.... in my opinion with my dogs i find the malinois to be more alert and sharp while my gsd also will stand there to protect but he kinds of like to wait and see what is gonna happen before he jumps in . But when we are on hikes with my gsd alone than he tends to be more alert and sharp i dont know if this has to do because both are males and the malinois is the dominant one
I have a GSD and Malinois mix. I adopted her from my local animal control I was volunteering at, at the time. She was very stand offish to anyone but me, and was at risk of being put down to make room for another dog. Her and I clicked right away. I had no idea she had Malinois in her. But, made sense it could happen living in a military town for SFO. She had to chase her ball hours everyday and would not take no for an answer. Thankfully, she has more of a GSD personality than Malinois. She is the most loyal and protective dog I ever had. She is so protective, she has to be locked up in a room when people come over. Which is sad, but safe for everyone. I sleep well at night, as a woman who lives alone, knowing she is there.
I enjoyed this video a lot. Could you do a video where you review this video or this same situation of the dogs playing and comment on how you are reading their behaviors? When is the growling/mouthing play, and when is it turning into NOT playing. Thanks! 😅😊
Love my Mal. First time owner of the breed. 2yrs old now. Just something about the way he looks at me and others. I’ve never had a breed that looks at me like that. Dallas is a house dog. He is great. And I know he’s an exception. That’s why o told my kids it’s roulette in getting another. He does have a switch though. His lineage is back to Cooper BRN 9900. He is no where in that level but he could. He learns so fast. But he just a good boy in a family house with tons of visitors. He does get put up when little ones come over. He’s not yo good with little kids.
A poodle is a great dog for the right person, both GSD and Mal are great dogs too. Love dogs and all of them have been great in my life, rottweiler, doberman, Pitbull, Labs, Mixed, and lately a GSD (working line). What really outstand the GSD in my case beside super intelligence, it is the emotional connection. It's amazing and scaring at the same time, the dog just cannot talk at all but super responsive to all my feeling and emotion states. Really impressive.
I'm a GSD owner my whole life still have them my life work has changed me but I still have the DOGGO...I was a ironworker now a truckdriver ..my female loves being with me and traveling she has her seat windshield is her office ..or this truck is her truck she's very protective of it . . I'm from Texas ...so we go to Wyoming .Colorado. New Mexico,,back to TX on our loop I usually park at rest areas ..more freedom to let a dog out ect..she's fine and happy our training moments I'm all about training ..she is awesome in our world she adapts ...Mal? Can they accept truck life? I do campgrounds ect to park to let my girl explore ...walk rivers ...but I been thinking Mal I'd love to have one ...but on a truck . Tight environment lots of learning just slower pace .. my GSD Handel's it fine ..a few days here n there she is ...daddy imma gonna run around ...I'm good cabin fever and wants to stretch herself out for 20 min of ball Frisbee..or just pacing...but get to close to the truck ..she's all GSD mode...talk to me without her permission GSD MODE ...when I sleep she's awake waiting lol idk but she's always alert to alert me were a team. She will bite I worked her on that while she was a pup as well as sit wait .release.to her it's all the same food or someone or something...but I'd love to have a Mal after all my yrs of growing up with a GSD to feel that pressure of it
If you assert constant authority with any working dog, it can be a great family dog and this comes from 38 years experience with German Shepherds and Malinois.
Me and the shepherd I just picked up for training are sitting watching this and she wasn't well socialized every time she hears the dogs bark she perks up
My uncle is an expert trainer of Belgian shepherds and I grew up with Malinois and we have 8 of them in the family. If you want a family dog, get a Groenendael or Tervuren, but surely not a Malinois or German Shepherd. Groenendaels are beautiful black shepherds and known for being real family dogs. They get along really well with children and other pets, same with the Tervuren who looks like a copy paste of the German shepherd but is way more kids friendly. Malinois and Germans can easily become very dangerous dogs with the wrong owners, if they can't get ride of their high energy and don't have the mental stimulation they need. The Malinois is my favorite breed and even if I am still very young, i perfectly understand their needs. I am work with them during my school holidays and totally loving them. We recently had a 1 year old Mal who has bitten his owner badly. They wanted to put him down, but we were able to safe him. He didn't stop licking me and we adopted him. He's such a sweetheart and follows me everywhere.
I've had a purebred male Malinois. Good dog but the wrong dog for me and probably 99% of people. Crackhead is an understatement. Impressive how athletic and intense they are but it never stopped. 24/7 he needed a task and strong discipline that I was not prepared for. They become destructive and have no respect if you're not a strong handler who knows what their doing, which I was not. GSD is a much better option for an average dog owner
aw I like that you left in the start of the dog fight, it makes me feel better knowing that even professional dog trainers have dogs that get a bit naughty lol. They're both gorgeous dogs, I love the look of Belgian shep a lot but I'm more familiar with GSDs. I did want a Belgian shep for a while but when I did some research on the breed they're way too much work. GSDs are more my speed

Love your content! I recently acquired a GSD and he's 11 weeks old, I'd love to get professional obedience training for him but I'm not sure where to take him that's reliable. Do you know anyone in the NYC area that I should go to? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have done the basic sit, come, down...etc.
Can't help with the professional training aspect, but, watch this channel, Robert Cabral, and Leerburg (off the top of my head, I'm sure there's other good RU-vid channels) if you aren't already. Figure out something you can start trying to work on every day, at least something simple like sitting to go through doors or making eye contact, etc.
I have Malino 8 months he is very defensive, stubborn and very smart. Although I had to play his way to get along with myself superior to him and now he has calmed down. He is very good with my children, and now you can do whatever you want with him, he will not oppose you. But he is still very defensive with strangers :)
