It was actually Stan Lee that insisted that the lost love story turn out to be made up, because even though he's playing a fictional version of himself, he thought the "I'd give it all up for one moment with her" would be an insult to his actual wife.
@@edwardthompson4600 yeah I believe clerks happened the day after mallrats. When I bought the chasing Amy DVD they had a little booklet thing you that came with it told the timeline and when was where and everything
Jason Lee absolutely carries a few of these Kevin Smith films. My hot take is that Jason Lee was supposed to have the career that Ryan Reynolds has enjoyed.
That line cracked me the f up! Another reactor said similar I regards to podcasting and it was too funny as he is one of the OG podcasters and talks a lottttttttt😂
re: the "Whoopie" question, there was a popular game show called The Newlywed Game where one spouse would answer questions while the other wasn't there, and they'd see if the answers to the same questions matched. Instead of the word sex, they would use the word Whoopie because broadcast TV. Side note: it's famous for the question "where is the strangest place you've ever made Whoopie?" and the answer the wife gave was "In the ass," though in the urban legend it's "in the butt, Bob."
Oh man it's been YEARS since I've watched The Newlywed Game that I forgot about "whoopie" to be honest. I used to watch that show back when I was probably way too young to be watching it, but I was fascinated with game shows from years before I was born LOL.
Jay and Bob running around in the background really liven up the movie, as well as the cuts to Ethan Suplee and his damned sailboat. And Stan's cameo is an amazingly heartfelt sequence, and I love the superhero emotional allegories, despite being all deception. RIP to a legend.
The thing with Kevin Smith is he can get serious across whilst being utterly absurd..and it works, not for everybody granted....but it always has a tale to tell...Chasing Amy was a masterpiece..
Willam (the sailboat guy) is the same character that Veronica calls snowball in Clerks. He's just played by Ethan Suplee here. Scott Mosier was supposed to reprise his role. I've heard the story told by Kevin Smith but I've heard him talk so much I can't remember where. It was probably that Ethan auditioned for a different role and decided the cast him as Willam because they liked him so they offered him this role.
I think my favourite part of this movie is when Brodie goes through part of his noises he'd make while "making whoopie" before stopping himself and saying it's too private.
Mallrats was made long before Stan Lee cameos became a thing, so seeing him on screen was actually kind of mind-blowing. And seeing as how 1995 was the _very_ beginning of the internet era, it's completely believable that even a superfan like Brodie wouldn't recognize Stan at first. This was actually among Ben Affleck's first roles, and *was* the first time he played an adult (by age, anyway) on screen. Kevin Smith jokes to this day that he "made" Affleck. 🐇🐇🐇
If you like hearing Kevin Smith speak, check out the "An Evening with Kevin Smith" series. He did tours where he'd do extended live-audience Q&A sessions, mostly at colleges. He tells the most amazing stories, full of humor. The story he tells about how he met his wife, and their first date, is GOLD.
Ever since you saw Captain Marvel with the Stan Lee cameo reading the script to Mallrats, I've been looking forward to your reaction. Looking forward to more of the View Askew Universe.
I actually met Stan Lee at NYCC the year before he died. He was very cool and very nice and it's nice to see him pop up and offer superhero romantic advice in one of my favorite movies
Kevin Smith advertised this movie on comic book back covers when it came out. It had a “magic eye” image. It said Mallrats, but it was pretty cool. Those images were a hit one year in the 90s. Wow. Memories of weekly runs to the comic store on Wednesdays…
"I wish he talked more, I like the sound of his voice." I'll take things Jennifer Schwalbach has never said for $1000, Alex. If you want to hear Kevin talk, he has any number of podcasts, and he's done a lot of stand up gigs where he just tells stories. It's all very funny and insightful about how he makes movies and it's highly recommended if you like his brand of humor.
Yes, I've heard he talks a lot! I am gonna avoid that kind of stuff until I'm all caught up on the universe, just cause I anticipate he probably talks a lot about all the films. But I can't wait to check them out once I am!
@@kaiielle When you do get around to watching them, I would definitely watch his stand up. He is less about telling jokes jokes and more about telling funny stories and his story telling is absolutely amazing.
@@kaiielle His story about his script treatment for Superman that he was asked to write is amazing. Watch that before you watch The Flash movie if you ever do. Just sayin.
@@godlessveteran2431The guy he talks about in that story thought it was very flattering to which Smith has said “further proof that the guy is insane…almost clincally” he also recently married Pam Anderson and it lasted like a whole five minutes
I loved this one! As an avid comic book collector this was the first film that made me feel seen. The references were all spot on and seeing the opening credits with re-imagined comic book covers that I was familiar with from the artists that I also was familiar with was a big deal for me.
Mallrats was actually my introduction to the ViewAskewniverse. I had no idea who Kevin Smith was at the time, and the only reason I knew about it was because my friends would quote it constantly. Also, since I was super introverted back then. They would call me Silent Bob 😅 Back when I still lived at home and had cable. Mallrats was on the IFC channel. So I watched it and loved it. It was also cool to finally get all the quotes my friends were saying. After that I saw Clerks and so on and so on. Today, I'd definitely call myself a Kevin Smith fan. I do hope to meet him one day. I'm glad you like Mallrats Kaiielle. Just like you I still have memories of malls way back when. To me going to the mall back then was a big deal. Now, not so much. Anyway, I can't wait for you to watch more Kevin Smith movies.
Pretty sure I started the same way. Mallrats was much more relatable humor to me in my teens, and it still stands high in my VA rankings over more fan-favorites like Clerks or Chasing Amy.
I am sure you already know this, but Silent Bob is writer/director Kevin Smith. He has tons of pod casts and stand up shows where he doesn’t shut up if you want to hear him talk more. Aside from the Askewniverse he also made 2 movies of what was supposed to be a Canadian trilogy with Johnny Depp - Tusk and Yoga Hosers.
I watched this yesterday and it was such a fun time, very cartoonish and hilarious. Also, fun fact but canonically Randal and Brodie are cousins since they have the same Cousin Walter (Who broke his neck trying to suck his own yk) And I totally see em being related, everything matches: the twisted sense of humor, being effortlessly cool and kinda hot, their geek hobbies (Randal´s movies and Brodie´s comics).
Kevin Smith's universe is great 😂 I live in Maine and a lot of stores have closed in our malls. I love the scene at the pet store "say good bye to the kitties"
This movie is pure nostalgia for me. It was the first Jay and Silent Bob movie I saw and will always be among my favorites (I kind of rotate between this, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Dogma). So glad you're doing these. Rene was played by Shannon Doherty, who also played Brenda on Beverly Hills 90210. This is why she hits Willem (the sailboat guy) and calls him a dick when he calls her Brenda. Didn't know if you caught that.
Actually, there's a bit of an in joke with every character played by the actor that plays Dante. If you look/listen to what his name is, you'll notice he says his name is Gill Hicks. Well, Dante is his brother. So the joke is for every movie with that actor, he's playing one of Dante's brothers. They even go out of their way to say his name or have it displayed somewhere as an easter egg. So while he's not always playing Dante, he is playing one of the Hicks Brothers.
Kevin Smith made an expanded Clerks universe with connected movies and character crossovers, but also used some of the same actors for different parts in other movies. Get used to seeing Jason Lee for instance.
Just to let you know that Stan Lee was reading his copy of the script for Mallrats during his final MCU cameo in Captain Marvel, so Mallrats and this whole universe is a part of the MCU.
If you love Kevin Smith's voice you need to watch any of his Evening With Q&A sessions Also outside of the vids everyone else has mentioned you need to include Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and Jay & Silent Bob Reboot
The 90's weren't weird... the 90's was AWESOME!!! I grew up as a teenager in the 90's... and it was GREAT! Kid in the 80's AMAZING and Teenager in the 90's AMAZING!! 2000's and up... SUCK!! lol
Jason Lee was unknown in film, but had a huge following and fan base because he was a legendary pro skateboarder. He was in Blind Skateboards : Video Days. Directed by Spike Jonze Everyone that skated in the 90’s watched Kevin Smith movies because we were in awe that one of our own could become famous outside of skateboarding
Love Mallrats, for me it's my favorite out of the Kevin Smith movie's. I love the Stan Lee scene I've seen Mallrats so many times, and each time that scene happens I fully believe his story. Even if it was just trying to get Bodie to believe in love, When Stan passed I had a movie blog page. I posted that Stan Lee scene as a tribute to him, for me it's my favorite cameo by Stan in any movies he has appeared in. Glad you're enjoying the series so far.
80's was definitely the Golden Age for the malls. 70's were a pretty big build up to the 80's mall universe. If you haven't seen 'Fast Times and Ridgemont High' that would be a great reaction.
They say "THE mall" after the 90s oversaturation is what truly killed malls. You get cities with multiple malls and suddenly it's hard to compete. Online shopping obviously helps but there are countries where malls still exist and do well, it's the saturation of the US malls that killed them.
"Mallrats" and "Clerks" happen on the same day. In "Clerks" Randall says that Julie Dwyer "died yesterday". Gil Hicks is Dante's cousin. He also has another cousin - Grant Hicks (he appears in "Dogma" movie).
I enjoyed your reaction to Mallrats very much. I first saw this film and Clerks when I was in college 25 or 26 years ago. I thought they were alot of fun. I can relate to the 90s mall culture very much. I worked in a mall in high school and college. I remember how much activity and events were going on in the mall all the time. There was art shows, craft fairs, comic fests. Vendors and tables in all the corridors in the mall. Oh and toy shows. It was so awesome and fun.
while I've never seen Mallrats I've of course heard of it and watching this gives me kind of the highlights and lets me know if one day whether to check it out. kinda bums ya out that well now in 2023 for those of us who grew up with malls and going to a local mall to hangout was very much a thing. Seems like a lifetime ago in ways. Great reaction!!
Bickety-Bam! FUN FACT: Trish the Dish was almost played by Jennifer Love Hewitt. Kevin Smith ultimately decided against it, as he felt she wouldn't fit in this environment and he was afraid Jay would be hitting on her all the time.
I'm a bit late to this because I wanted to watch the FL and didn't have time for a couple of days, so some of what I was going to say has already been said, but there's some stuff that still wasn't mentioned. In addition to Julie Dwyer being the person whose funeral Dante and Randal attend in Clerks, the character Ethan Suplee is playing, Willem Black, is actually the same character that Dante's girlfriend nicknamed "Snowball" in Clerks. In Clerks, he was played by Kevin Smith's longtime close friend and main producer Scott Mosier (who still acts in this one as Michael Rooker's assistant, who has to hold the vomit bag). I don't remember why Mosier didn't play Willem again (he played several roles in Clerks, but maybe on a studio movie they felt they couldn't do that), but Smith has joked about a Marvel multiverse-style explanation for the two different Willems. Also, Joey Lauren Adams, who plays Gwen, is said to have had sex in costume on a pool table with Rick Derris, a character that appears in Clerks (a dickish arrogant customer who picks up a girl to have sex on the beach with in the convenience store). The names T.S. and Brodie (and Bruce -- Brodie's full name is Brodie Bruce) are references to the names of Sheriff Brody, T.S. Quint, and Bruce, the animatronic shark, from Jaws. The name LaFours is a reference to a similar authority figure character (with the same straw hat) from the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The name "Gwen Turner" is a reference to Smith's longtime friend and fellow independent filmmaker Guinevere Turner, a queer woman who would go onto write and appear in Mary Harron's American Psycho, which I would've suggested to you on your form if you hadn't seen it. Finally, the text descriptions of what happens to everyone at the end (in particular, the font) is a reference to Fast Times at Ridgemont High, which again would've gone in your form if you hadn't marked it as watched. The tone of this one is a little different from Mallrats because Smith intentionally wanted to make something that had the energy of an '80s R-rated teen comedy like Porky's or Animal House (or Fast Times). It'll be interesting to see what you think of the next three movies, which go in all sorts of different directions from here.
You also will notice that Randall talked about his cousin Walter and so does Brodie. Randall and Brodie are cousins. So are Dante and Gill Hicks(bachelor #3).
So in Captian Marvel there is a cameo of Stan Lee reading his lines for Mallrats which means Jay and Silent Bob are part of the Marvel Universe which I love.
The Timeline placement in this film is set 2-3 days before everything that happened in Clerk's since the one who died while swimming laps in this film is the same girl's wake that Dante and Randal went to in Clerk's.
I never thought of the topless psychic looking like one of the mean girls since I have not seen it, but I do remember how she replaced Suzanne Summers on Three’s Company as Terry the Nurse. I remember being uprises when she showed up in Mallrats.
Mallrats is my ultimate comfort movie. Anytime I'm super stressed, anxious, or nervous I put on this movie and smile for an hour and a half or so. I have it pretty much memorized by this point. So happy to see you continue on through the Veiwaskewniverse. If you want to hear more from Kevin Smith (in non podcast form) you should check out a movie called Catch and Release, an indy film from 2006 that features Smith as an actor.
My fav personal fact that 3D picture he’s looking at is not a sail boat. You can do it yourself with the actual video. It’s a bunch of cones, spheres, and random shapes.
I can't wait until you get to Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back! I've seen Chasing Amy but it's been so long since I actually saw that movie. I'm talking like 20 years. 🐇🐰
Wow it's been years since I've watched this movie and it's aged like milk. Ethan Suplee is a nice guy, when he was working on "Without a Paddle", he used to go into the Blockbuster where my friends worked and rent DVDs from them all the time (it was the early 00s when Blockbuster still existed). My friend would never charge him so when he was leaving, he came by for the last time and brought him an action figure of his character from "Mallrats" and signed it with "It's a fucking sailboat!"
Fun fact, the girl that they talk about dying at the beginning is the same girl who's funeral Dante and Randal close down the store to go to. Also, I look forward to seeing your on going reactions to Kevin Smith's movies. Dogma is my personal favorite, but I love most of Kevin Smith's films.
Fun fact: Kevin Smith shot basically a completely diff opening and a lot of the movie was diff from the final cut. Not so fun fact: So even though Jason Mewes had played Jay in Clerks, cause Universal did not want Jason to play him in Mallrats so he had to audition against such actors as Seth Green & Breckin Meyer. Fun fact #2: So Joey Lauren Adams who plays Gwen in this movie and at one point dated T.S (Jeremy London) well she also dated his identical twin brother (Jason London) a few years earlier in a movie called Dazed & Confused which I’d love to see you react to someday. It has so many big time actors from nowadays (Who were no names at the time) it’s insane.
Theres another view askew movie that came out after Mallrats but before Chaing Amy. It was called "Drawing Flies" It unfortunately had a limited release and no youtubers have reacted to it. It stared Jason Lee as a guy obsesed with Bigfoot. Renee Humphrey who was also in mallrats was in it. As well as Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes playing other characters in it besides Jay and Silent Bob.
Malls weren't really a thing by the time I was old enough to be hanging around in a place like that. And it really does honestly seem weird that people would just go there and hang out. And shop? In person? Amazon is so much easier! Last century was wild.😝 I can't remember what order the View Askewniverse plays in. I know which one I hope is next, but I've decided not to look it up. I'll just be surprised when your reaction is announced. ✌🤓
I still shop in person sometimes because I've been burned too many times by shopping online and the clothes arrive and don't fit like I thought. It's a hassle to return stuff when you bought it online, so the only clothes I buy online are things like t-shirts and sweaters and underclothes (except bras). Everything else I like to still shop in store. It used to be so fun to just go waste time at the mall and window shop, it was good for exercise, a great way to kill time before social media took over our brains.
This movie was my introduction to Kevin Smith, and the next movie of his I saw was Dogma. To this day Dogma is my favorite Kevin Smith movie. As for why he doesn't talk, is because he hates his voice on film. Here's a bit of trivia about the actor who plays TS His name is Jeremy London. He has an identical twin brother, Jason, who's also an actor. Jason was one of the actors in Dazed and Confused, which I HIGHLY recommend. BTW Dazed and Confused was Matthew McConaughey's first movie.
14:15 something fun, the elevator music is the same music that plays in Blues Brothers when Jake and Elwood are riding up the elevator at the end of that one.
If you like Kevin Smiths voice, there are a few college tour Q and A videos he did a while back....and he talks.....alot. Seriously, one question would lead to a 20-30 minute contemporaneous story. The prince story is awesome.
So Smith has/had plans for a sequel to this movie dealing with Brody having a daughter with Renee. He and Shannon Doherty read a scene from the script he has written for it on her podcast, sadly now that she has passed this scene will never happen

@@ericb9252 It's only 6. She might be thinking Jersey Girl is in the universe, but it's a one off. It would be a great reaction, but not in the universe.

Michael Rooker was in Oliver Stone’s “JFK” , as many times as I’ve seen both movies I never associated them as the same actor because in “JFK” he was younger, skinner and had hair. Rene Is Shannen Doherty from “Beverly Hills 90210” who I had a crush on back in the day.And Jason Lee as Brodie , I have no idea if he is related to Stan Lee, but I liked Jason in “Almost Famous “
If it wasn't already said that is a different character than Dante from Clerks but every character he plays in the Viewaskewniverse they all have the same last name "Hicks". Also since you miss Richard Dawson you should watch The Running Man if you haven't already
