For Maria: There is an enormous amount of symbolic imagery in the video. The opening death scene there are the velvet ropes around her (like a theater) with all the reporters gathered to the drama of her death scene. But then there is no one at the funeral, in fact all the chairs turned away. None of them actually care about her. Then you have the scene of people picking over various ephemeral things and just ignoring her offering up her heart. The repeat of the scene with everyone in hoods symbolizing the anonymity of the haters and then the pencils are all the attacks she receives. Then of course the crown of nails, you'll note that when she picks it up her fingers are ink stained. It's representing that to create her art she has to take on both the glory and pain. And of course the end where her members help bring her up out of depression. They are stronger together than individually. There is also a whole theme of red hair being her more emotional internal self and the black hair being the strong armor she puts on to face the world.

That true beauty scene caught me off guard that I screamed when I heard Maria! That scene was so funny I died of second hand embarrassment 😂 The fact that the song is about how Hwasa was hated on for not fitting the beauty standards and is a message to herself that she shouldn't suffer she's still beautiful, was perfect for the kdrama tbh

Ha, "eclipse" was not only the dark concept/style you expected but also pretty firmly entrenched in what many kpop fans consider boy group territory. Which, of course, was on purpose In a great interview with jaejae, byul talked about one of her personal feminist battles (every member of mamamoo has several), the removal of gender stereotypes, here she specifically made it about music 'there should be no boy group music, no girl group music. Just music'. The choreo is also firmly in 'boy group' territory (which byul prefers more than 'girl group' stuff) and she even got kasper (noted boy group choreographer, esp for exo) to create the choreo. She was the first female artist he worked with and he sang nothing but praises for her and her dancers, both male and female (they have a female only performance video). He even returned about a month later to choreograph for a completely different style of music, "absence" (which showcases her vocals) "Eclipse" itself is basically about the various aspects of a person's persona and sort of shows how they struggle within each of us. The lyrics specifically name two of byul's personas: the version if her in all white is 'moonstar the defender', who wants to save/protect everyone (note: protecting is usually associated with men), the creepy all black is 'monster, the devourer'... the wicked, destructive part in all of us (thst isn't always all bad. It can often be associated with pranks/mischief, too. One of byul's favorite things). In one of her fansigns, while signing a poster of the little seen version of her wearing both black and white and pulling (or being pulled by) ropes, she explained that this is an important aspect. It's the one trying to keep balance between moonstar and monster, make sure neither one gets complete control The brown leather outfit is to symbolize 'neutral' or 'normal' her, the one everyone sees from the outside As for the paramilitary look? No clue. She's either never explained it or whoever she explained it to never shared. (The 'balance' one was only ever directly told to the one fan, we wouldn't know if they hadn't shared)
@SapiaNt0mata
@SapiaNt0mata Год назад
the personal feminist battle of Moonbyul is utterly pointless. why? there is no need to remove the gender stereotype of something that doesn't exist in reality. there is no boy group music neither boy group dance. that's your and others like you projection. reality isn't like that. look at CL for example. she is doing aggressive rap with explicit lyrics. this means that even females can do aggressive rap and it's not exclusive to males, so there's no gender stereotype in music. the thing is, that just how CL does aggressive rap cause it's her choice, girl groups do different concepts than boy groups. that's it. there is no gender streotype. it's simply different concept. if girl groups want to do more aggressive concept like boy groups they can, but they don't want too. do you think that Hwasa wants to do aggressive rap to shatter the gender stereotypes? nope. she wants to do more feminine concept. not every female in Kpop will be aggressive like CL to do what she does. does Twice for example look like aggressive rappers like CL to you? no. then you can't go to Twice that do cute concept and tell them to do more masculine concept to remove the gender stereotypes in music same applies to choreography. can Twice do concept like Stray Kids? yes. but Twice are doing cute concept so they will do choreography that matches their concept
@I-Roy
@I-Roy Год назад
@@SapiaNt0mata "There is no gender stereotypes" also "boy groups do different types of concepts than girls" "they just don't want to" (just stop before asking why and then make up a baseless conclusion and scream at people cuz "*wryyy!* feminism") Boys and girls in Kpop sound (you mentioned CL great example)and dance (see comments from both Moon and the choreographer for eclipse) completely differently and they sing about subjects differently too(like the protector trope that moonbyul uses here which is entirely a boygroup thing). On top of all that ill remind you that they DONT get to chose most of the time and they're forced to do concepts that are expected of them based on gender and only gender. Gender is massive factor in what they get to do and it's forced on them directly and indirectly by society, their superiors, the industry and even fans.

@SapiaNt0mata Год назад
@@I-Roy just cause they do different type of concept it doesn't mean that girl groups cannot do a concept that boy groups do. people like you automatically assume that a girl cannot do hip-hop dance for example cause it's a boy dance. you project the gender stereotypes by yourself and then say "gender stereotypes need to get removed" just to virtue signal 👍 look at Wheein. do you think Wheein will write lyrics about doing drugs, curse, etc for her solo? no. but CL writes lyrics like these. can Wheein also do it? yes, but she don't want too. this is not gender stereotype. it's personal choice. when you go to a job you do what you want to do? nope. you do what the boss says. they know very well that when they'll join they will have to do a concept, and they accept it. but they are not forced to do the concept. and if they join, they have the option to quit. Mamammoo was supposed to have 5 members but 1 member quit. as you can see they have the freedom to quit. look females at clubs, parties, etc. do they do breakdance? no. what they do? twerking, etc etc. what do you see when you look at twerk? women, women, women, and more women. women everywhere. now look at breakdnce. what do you see? men, men, men, men, and more men. can men do twerk and women breakdance? yes, but they don't want too cause breakdance is more manly dance and twerk more feminine dance. you can't force women to do breakdance and men do twerk just cause you want to remove the gender stereotypes. that's not how things work. gender is also massive factor to jobs. do you see women miners, construction workers, road builders, house painters, electricians, etc? nope. who does these jobs? men.

That scene is one of many references to the italian movie 'malena' scattered throughout this mv (the intro with the lighter is directly a scene from it) That movie resonated so much with hwasa as she can see many parallels with her own life, so she prob'ly felt she should do an homage to it here, likely with scenes that spoke to her the most

Seoho (Oneus)and Yonghoon (Onewe) did that chorus vocals in Moonbyul’s Eclipse. But Moonbyul’s solos are so diverse. She has everything for every genre. She put so much thought into the album concept too. Like in 6equence the setlist were made that way to fit the narrative of love sequence which unfortunately a sad ending. So when she held her concert ealier this year she named it Director’s cut, where the ending change. She ends her concert with her first solo song Selfish which i conclude she selfishly choose to be free and happy, this is from my pov only though the intepretation might be different but that’s how it feels like watching the whole concert till the end. Her discography is my fav. I wish i could dive into her music mind because it’s interesting.

"Easy" was wheein's solo debut (and she was the firrst of the four to officially debut as a soloist, despite the fact they had all released solo songs previously, either on albums or just random uploads. And despite the fact she never promoted it. Just dropped the single album and left it at that As i mentioned at "water color", both those backup dancers were members of the just jerk dance crew and wheein was the first idol either worked with. Both are now big name, sought after choreographers and one has been choreographing all wheein's songs from "water color" on, so far I do kinda wish you'd done hwasa's "twit" alongside this instead of "maria" just because "easy" and "twit" are pretty much two sides of the same coin. Each was the debut solo for wheein and hwasa, each had the other appear in it (to keep a promise they had made prior, to guest in each other's solo mv). And each seems to talk about the same relationship from different perspectives. "Easy" is all about making your partner the center of your universe and regretting it as you get ignored, tsken for granted until you've finally had enough and just end things. While "twit" is about your partner making you the center of their exietence, you making fun of them for doing that until you realize you made them that way and want to start over on equal footing. But by that time they had gotten fed up and broke things off It's been said countless times, and will be said countless more, but r&b is pretty much wheein's home; she shines so well in it and obviously loves both listening to and singing it (quite a few of her song or artist suggestions tend to be r&b, though she definitely has eclectic tastes) Sik-k was with h1gher music until just last montu, and wheein and hwasa are friends with a lot of h1gher and aomg artists. Wheein was a fan of his and asked him to collab with her despite being super shy. There are adorably awkward behind the scenes on mmmtv, but i'm glad the two have become close since He was one of the few people who had her instagram account before she went public with it and they tend to promote each others work there, or just congratulate each other

"Spit it out" was solar's official debut as a soloist, years after the other three debuted, despite her being the first member (and first 3rd gen female idol) to host a solo concert (back in 2018. Moonbyul was second for both group/3rd gen with her online concert in 2020) and the 'solar gamsung' (solar's emotions) series of covers she's released over the years. Various songs that have special meaning to her. All definitely worth checking out, esp as she doeen't have terribly much more official solo music released (that said, "hello" and "big booty" definitely need to be on the list) She did a great interview on jessi's showterview explaining the song (she later returned to it when released "honey") but itbis basically about her doing what she wants despite others trying to stop her. That's something all of mamamoo is good at, but solar is by far the most vocal about it With the bright short cut shirts, she actually asked the dancers and staff what color she should wear... and promptly wore what she wanted instead of what they settled on As for the bald moment, she wanted to show her raw, naked self and originally intended to actually shave her hair for it. All the staff but their field ceo, kdh, tried to stop her, but his responde was the same for any of their creative ideas: "if that's what you want to do, go for it" (a rarity when it comes to female artists, who typically aren't allowed to have much creative freedom of any kind). Some of the staff showed her how bald caps work at basically the last minute and she agreed to do that instead. (She looks absolutely amazing short hsir, btw. Let us see it exactly one day a few years ago before went back to using extensions. All of mamamoo's hair is shorter thsn you probably expect, with wheein saying a while back that she had the longest natural hair in the group, when it was just past shoulder length)

Moonbyul's solos really are quite diverse. She followed up Eclipse with the heartbreaking rnb pop ballad, "Absence." It's my personal favorite among her solo title track releases. It's based on a kdrama and has the unique perspective of a mistress in a relationship. (As in, the woman that a married man is seeing. She's in love with a married man that won't commit to her and makes empty promises.) Moonbyul's voice is deep and very emotive in my opinion, so I hope you get to experience those songs of hers too. :)

Others have said a lot on "maria", like it being her baptismal name and the definite need to check out the dkdk tv explanation to get a lot of the wordplay she uses in the song, esp with 'maria' and korean words thst sound similar, so i won't rehash that (much) but heartily second, third, or 84th the dkdk video on the song. It'll likely make you fall for her even more Hyejin (hwasa) actually got baptized catholic to go to a catholic high school and she tricked wheein into joining her for it (both so they could continue going to the same school and so they could be together in the afterlife). Hwasa identifies as catholic, but really, she's just extremely spiritual and takes aspects from various sources that just make sense or feel right to her (like she used a... i think buddhist?... ritual to concecrate her new car when she got it). She also has maria tattooed on the back of her neck. And uses the name as her english name (as an aside, wheein was baptized as gabriella, but feels nowhere the same connection to that name, using shelby as her english name) The song really is about all the crap she's endured since even before debut... colorism (she was often called 'too dark' to be an idol), weight issues ('too fat', despite being nowhere near that, even as a teen when, yes, she was a little chubby. But nowhere near she has been made out to be), issues with what she wears, how she carries herself snd so much more... all of mamamoo are shit magnets... so many love to hate them precisely because they refuse to conform to what is expected of female idols (and koreans in general), but even then, hwasa gets the majority of that (with moonbyul frequently being second for being 'too boyish'). That said, they also get a lot of praise and support for this and have been helping change perceptions in that country, especially hwasa On the video itself... there really is a lot to take in, and some of it is visual wordplay or based on lyrics at that moment. But i do want to point out one aspect often missed... there are two hwasas in the video and each got their own teaser prior to the song's release. Black haired hwasa is 'morte' or 'death', red haired hwasa is 'vita' or 'life'. Morte is the one who dies, who has no one show to her wake (with chairs even turned away from body) while vita looks on. Rewatch and pay attention to the scenes for each version of her, they say a lot with no words. Also, when morte looks into the tub, the reflection is vita looking back at her Also, as mentioned in a reply to another comment, there are a lot of references to the italian movie 'malena' that really spoke to hwasa when she watched it. The movie is about a beautiful young woman in a smallish town who all the men lust after for her appearance and all the women hate because of how the men act and think. Things come to a head, she goea a bit crazy and chops her hair off (note scissors in mv) and dyes it red before moving to the big city at the end This kind of dual lust-hate is something hwasa is quite familiar with, so i see why the movie resonates so much with her

They had different style and genre for their solos and all of that were so good. I listen to their solo songs playlist based on what kind of music I want to listen to that day. It's weird that I don't even skip any song from their discography, all of it were good (because I usually never skip discography just for my ultimate favorite western artists, and now mamamoo part of my top 5 favorite artists and the only kpop that I keep listening to) And also, the way they cover other people songs are really good, and lots of time I prefer mamamoo's version. MAMA MAMA MAMAMOO!!!! So talented individually and collectively. I love'em all, ot4. Please react to Byulie's ABSENCE, Hwasa's LMM, and Wheein's WATERCOLOR. When you react to 4 videos at a time quality is always lost, in my opinion. Always enjoy your reactions and comments, especially to Mamamoo.

Everyone has gone into a lot of detail about Maria, but to simplify: the song and mv are both easier to understand if you think of "Maria" as Hwasa's more innocent alter-ego. The song is written to her younger self, telling her to be strong in the face of constant hate and criticism, something Hwasa faced in real life. Though, I have seen other subtitles/translations on other channels that seem to capture the wordplay better and make the imagery in the mv a bit easier to understand.

The next song from Hwasa you should check out is Lmm or Lose My Mind. It's a very emotional ballad that also deals with how she handles criticism and hate, and the mv is a masterpiece, like a short film.

There are 3 backup singers credited on Eclipse. I'm pretty sure the demonic male voice is by Yonghoon of Onewe. Seoho of Oneus is one of the others. I forgot the 3rd singer but a moomoo will probably fill in the blank. Easy is one of my favorite Wheein songs and is high on my list of neglected gems from 2018. Watch the MV again and look for all the sight gags and visual puns on common expressions like We're headed in opposite directions, There's a wall between us, I see right through you, and of course Do you need glasses? He doesn't appreciate her charms and takes her for granted so for example he looks at her blankly as he reads the newspaper and doesn't see her as the red hot chic chick she really is - the scene of her in red with bling and backup dancers represents her inner self but he's too blind to notice and too dumb to look under the surface, unlike Wheein, who investigates their relationship in the MV and literally looks under the surface of things when she looks under the table. Maria is the name Hwasa took when she was baptized as a Catholic and in the song she's singing to herself. There are several Korean puns in the lyrics and it really helps to watch the explanation video by David Kim of DKDK-TV. The people eating at the table are some of MMM's usual dancers including the blond guy who got your attention. As you probably know, Hwasa receives a ton of hate for how she looks, dresses and behaves. Maria is about the pain of receiving so many malicious comments while also affirming her inner strength and beauty. Maria was an enormous hit and was one of the most impactful songs of 2020. There's a bookend song on the Maria EP called LMM (Lost My Mind) which also deals with the topic of being targeted by internet bullies. LMM is a gorgeous song with an equally gorgeous MV and was my pick for 2020 SOTY. Solar isn't big on subtlety and Spit It Out is about doing what she wants, letting it all hang out and spitting out her passion in her music and everything she does. She's always max effort, always takes everything to extremes and has a wild imagination that often produces startling, unexpected combinations of images and ideas. We see the bright, bold, fiery side of her in Spit It Out and Honey but the thing about Solar is that she has a kaleidoscopic personality with so many apparently contradictory facets that the other members have accused her of having a multiple personality disorder. For a look at her poetic, soulful side watch Nada Sou Sour or some of the other MVs in her Solar Emotion project, a series of 9 or 10 covers she released between 2015-18, or the double pole dance video set to her self-composed solo song Hello on her yt channel Solarsido.

And all the other girls out there in this world should love themselves the way they r right now... That's it for this song... ☺

4:17 From what I heard, Oneus' Seoho and Onewe Yonghoon were the male voices hitting those high notes and Oneus' Leedo was the deep voice basically narrating. Oneus is Mamamoo's younger brother group together with Onewe so I hope someday you dive deeper in their discography! Oneus is an idol group that has darker concepts and a storyline, while Onewe is an instrument-playing band that usually does alternative rock, but both groups have fun and light songs as well, and they even have 2 songs with each other, so I hope many people become fans of them!

@@MooYT_ Look how long ago the date of Eclipse was. And then there is that short little video where Moon Byul re-created a certain conversation with some boss...the company management FORCED her into being the rapper, otherwise she would never have been able to debut with Mamamoo. Obviously she is great at rapping and even writes her own stuff (which of course is awesome all the way around) but being forced was not fair. She auditioned as a vocalist for a reason, not a rapper. Other people outside of the company don't seem to get it, she's ONLY a rapper to them. But she can sing, she always has been able to. So the rumor about her vocal confidence is just that, a rumor set forth by the management. Fans and haters took that to heart when they should not have. Get it?
@MooYT_
@MooYT_ Год назад
@@jamescurfman3284 the reason her confidence went down was because she was forced to be a rapper. she was told she wasn't good enough to be a vocalist alongside the others. I don't need you to explain any of this to me, if anyone knows all about moonbyul's vocal journey it's me. also eclipse was only in february 2020, I know this because I remember when it came out. you're aware that mamamoo debuted in 2014 right? moonbyul only started showing her vocals more around 2018, yellow flower era. that's when she sang in paint me. and I'm talking more about career wise rather than little covers that she did for the fans.
@MooYT_
@MooYT_ Год назад
and present day, often when she gets complimented on her vocals she replies something along the lines of, "there's so many people who sing better than me" (source VLIVE, July this year I think it was) even now she has a long way to go with her confidence - due to her constantly STILL being told she's not good enough alongside mamamoo, for example when she revealed (on VLIVE) that she tried to sing the chorus in Another Day but didn't get to because the other members "did it better" can't you just acknowledge her journey? she's come a long way and it's been tough for her.
@jamescurfman3284
@jamescurfman3284 Год назад
@@MooYT_ "can't you just acknowledge...?" You really are not paying any attention to what I am saying. OBVIOUSLY being in Mamamoo of all K-Pop groups, the one that is CONSTANTLY called 'the Vocal Queens of K-Pop', Byul-yi would need to be able to do SOMETHING with vocals (even getting stuck as backup for the other three). That takes REAL WORK. So YES, OBVIOUSLY, she has had it just as rough as the other members. Good god, why would you ever think I am trying to cheapen her journey? Are you STUPID? OF COURSE Byul-yi would admit that there are better vocalists, she is a down-to-Earth humble sweetheart. She knows there are better, like the saying goes 'There is always somebody better'. She also knows that very intimately because she is in a group with three of the best vocalists in all of K-Pop. They all can help her with her vocals so she can try to get up to their levels (and I have no doubts that she could because of all of their work ethics). So, my entire point with my original post was that people ended up under-estimating her all the time when they say she can't sing and think she is only a rapper. This solo (and most of the others) proves all of them wrong. She has always been better than people knew, because her company kept her abilities secret. They are jerks. That doesn't mean she didn't work for those vocals in the first place.
