Great video! Personal and informative. Bought my 645 AFD some years ago but don't shoot with it as much as it deserves. Your video made me "hungry" again. Thank you!
I think this is the only Mamiya 645 I would give a go. I got burned by their terrible lens cement on the middle generations, despite loving the cameras otherwise. "It shows up, it works, and I can trust it" ... 💯 Great work!
Totally agree with you, Jamie! Sorry to hear you got burned by some of their cameras. This one has proven to be a workhorse so far and I’m excited for the years ahead with it. Thanks for watching! 😊
I can relate to all of that as well. I came from large pro body Nikon, the F4E & F5 35mm film so the Mamiya 645 SFD III was right at home w/ it's modern TTL & AF system. I didn't get around to trying the Digital back but that was what drew my attention at 1st. And 10+ yrs ago I had enough left 120 & 200 film to experiment so why not. It's somewhat fast enough for corporate events & weddings. I use on Custom Brackets Rotary Flash bracket w/ TTL flash & left handed electric AF & shutter controls. I even modded it's 2nd plug for my Nikon 10 pin on a D3S. A 210mm f4 long lens is brilliant on this.
Some really nice work there! I used to own one of those with a Trioplan 100/2.8 and I really loved it! Added bonus is that you can at some point buy a digital back for it :)
I hope you get the chance to use the updated Phase One version of this body and to some point use it with a digital back and find that this camera was designed considering many different needs and workflows that each one of them is unique to experience.
I hope so too! I’d love to get my hands on one eventually, even if just as a rental. The image quality out of those digital backs looks stunning! Thanks for watching!!
@@StevenSchultz There are budget options too, many being less than 1k. Leaf sensors for example come in pretty cheap and the older CCD Phase One sensors around that. It's just that the CCD sensors will limit you to just studio work. The plus sensors are the only sensor medium format digital sensor that can keep up with the needs of a wedding, but they are expensive. Sinar are common to be found for rental and they have the closest workflow to a film shooting. Have fun with whatever you end up getting in your hands.
Hey I love your videos, you helped convince me to buy the 645AFD that I bought last week. I shoot weddings. Do you have a recommendation on a flash system for the mamiya?
Hi Joshua! Thanks so much man, so happy to hear you picked up an AFD. You’re going to love it! As far as flash systems for the AFD, I’m actually working through that right now and plan to make a video about it soon. Stay tuned for an update! :)
I love this camera, but the one I had had film plane flatness problems, and upon reading, I found old threads from when the camera was new and this was a known known issue. Mamiya finally admitted it and supplied some new backs to customers but it mostly didn’t help. Have you noticed any images that were blurry in the center but sharp top and bottom?
Oh that's a huge bummer! Thankfully, I haven't had that issue with my camera. Was there any mention of a specific serial number or production run that experienced this problem?
Hey thanks for the great video I also watched you 250 rolls review- I have this camera and the 125 sync speed is not ideal- I wanted to ask if you've tried to mix fill flash at higher speeds and if this caused any of the black bands you'd get if it was just flash. thank you!
Hey love your content! And I have been meaning to get this camera for wedding and portrait use. Just one question I see other people are talking about how difficult it is to service this camera. Is it true with your experience? Have you had any issues or heard it’s unrepairable due to the lack of the old components? Many thanks 🙏
Hey thank you so much!! To be perfectly honest, I haven't had any issues with mine so far, so I haven't needed to consider repairs or service. But, like with all film cameras that have electronics, at some point or another, they will ultimately become unusable, so I make sure to take really good care of mine! Thank you for watching!!
Thank you so much! The only processing I did was in Negative Lab Pro. A lot of the conversions were one click, but I also tweaked highlights and shadows within NLP, and occasionally tweaked the color cast in the shadows and midtones. Thanks for watching, Ralph!!
Thank you so much for the review! One question...when pushing the DOF preview button, is it possible to alter time and aperture measurements (that would be useful for "stop down metering" with non-AF lenses)?
No link to where you may have purchased the Mamiya? Weird. Their way of doing business was so abysmal that you cannot mention them, so others may buy used equipment as well? Only links that could put some money in your pocket I see.
