Such brilliant insights. “Man should not change the environment to suit himself, but change himself to suit the environment.”

I love how the Plains Dweller regards his robotic care takers as family. Anthropomorphizing the robots, just like how Star People from All Tomorrows also thought of their robotic life support as family/their parents on the generation ships.

The plains-dweller story makes me sad. To have to raise this creature and then have no other choice but to let it go, out into the wild world that you can no longer share with him. As sad as it sounds, I hope the "family" were still human enough to feel the sadness of watching their "boy" stride away. That they let up a prayer for him. That they knew this was best, but that wouldn't make it easy, would it?

Hi Qu! Really glad you decided to start to read Man after man. This part of the story always intrigued me. I believe that the previous part stablished that the Hytek had a small population of "Andlas" leaving in their cities as servants. However, it was pretty obvious that Hytek depended much more of them than the Andlas of their masters. If I'm not mistaken there was a rebellion that cost the life of most of the Andlas population. I'm inclined to believe that Hytek didn't used their reduced population of servants as test subjects for their genetical experiments. Sure a few of the most loyals would have done anything for their masters, but most of them would have definitely abandoned the Hytek cities after the rebellion. My theory is that for several years, during the repopulation of earth with new human especies, Hytek kidnapped Andlas and used them as guinean pigs against their will. However, although primitive, Andlers knew how weak were the Hyteks without technology and they also killed or even captured some of them. To sum up, there was a war between this two human especies that took place for almost a thousand years before the cataclysm erased both of them from Earth.

As always, amazing work. As said before, I love how we get different perspectives of different people throughout this work. The normal humans see the High Techs efforts and even existence as unnatural and blasphemy. Meanwhile, the High Techs see their efforts as the only way to extend humanity’s existence, and the best way to fill ecological niches that have been left empty due to humanity pushing many species to extinction. Very fascinating to understand how each type of person thinks and feels. Pumped for part 5

I like to think that at some point after the genetically-engineered humans had been released into the wild, the Andala's have, in the first time in centuries, a rash of Bigfoot sightings. Like, "I'm telling you Jemmy, I saw a hairy wild-man at the edge of the woods! No clothes, no tools, nothing but the hair on it's body!" "Pfft, yeah, sure Gen, whatever you say, now come help me with the crops!"

This story really gives off a chilling prospect. when an ecological collapse happens it seems that humans were paying some sort of price by modifying themselves losing their intelligence and becoming the creatures they were replacing with themselves.

I wonder if the Hi Teks and the Tics didn't bother trying to use their genetic engineering to make their defective organs...no longer defective? Maybe if they did they felt like they would lose their identity or something?
@BewareCast
@BewareCast 2 года назад
That's an interesting point. They may have come to define themselves by their defects, by this point, and chose to continue on with them instead of fixing themselves.
