Man attacked by black bear while jogging on Whatcom County trail

A man is recovering after he was injured by a black bear while on a trail in Whatcom County Wednesday morning.
The man was jogging on a trail in a forested area north of Lake Whatcom around when he was attacked, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). Officers were notified about the attack around 8:30 a.m.
The man sustained “multiple injuries” to his hands and feet, the WDFW said. He was taken to a local hospital for medical care and released Wednesday afternoon.
“We are extremely thankful that the victim is recovering and receiving medical care from this unfortunate encounter,” said WDFW Police North Puget Sound Captain Jennifer Maurstad. “He did everything right during the incident and we wish him a speedy recovery. Wild animal encounters are unpredictable but, in most cases, they wish to avoid conflict as much as we do.”

Those tips are too generalized to be safe. While they may help in some cases, in others it may get you attacked. If the bear considers you as a threat. Don't be threatening. If the bear considers you as potential food, be as threatening as possible. You just have to learn what the difference is.

@@SusanKay- pretty steep. You have 50/50 chance of walking away unharmed. Learning about bears helps with the odds but never eliminates the chance of being attacked.

Because it had become habituated to humans instead of fearing us, and thus posed a high risk of future attacks.

@@seikibrian8641 I understand, but humans kill humans, but we don’t kill them automatically. They get a trial, they have some rights. Animals in their natural habitats should be given rights, especially since we’re encroaching on their territory more and more.

Bear spray may just piss them off more and doesn't work so well with pack hunting animals like coyotes especially when dumped dogs have joined their pack, that's a scary situation and is a very real one that is all too common in Cowlitz county. Carry a strong knife, machete, and firearm when in the woods always

I had a bear that came into our PA home when I was very young. I stopped, and looked to my left. She walked right up to me and pushed her nose into my stomach, then turned around and went back to looking inside the cabinets. She was just about 7feet tall. An adult that was visiting ran out of the home. The bear chased him and bit his arm. Another time I played dead with a brown bear. I don't recommend that. They know when something is dead or not. You can't fool them. I did get in the fetal position for a female with a cub...she didn't do anything. Never smile at wild animals...when they see your teeth, it's a threat. Carry Bear spray all the time, no matter where you are. Ever since hunters were allowed to kill bears with their cubs in their dens in alaska, bears don't feel safe in any den. Means less hibernation and more moving around looking for a safe place.

Lucky grandpa didnt become breakfast.. Bears should be avoided. If you see one, you are way too close.. Snap your pic if you can, but leave Smokey the Wild Bear alone and dont hang around.. move away from the area, warn other hikers. While hiking, be sure to look up into the trees. The bear or cougar could be up in a tree as likely as being on the ground.. they sound like a big dog woofing when they bark at you.. 🌲🌲🌲

Let me guess, someone was running through bear territory, not paying attention- wearing ear buds. 🙄 We always crank the radio pulling into dumps & transfer stations, coming home after being away. Too many narcissistic self-involved two-legged animals invading the habitat of the four-legged. Why is the law enforcement officer thinks a human instinct to survive is unusual or exceptional? If you've ever been with someone at end of life they keep fighting to live until the end. That is the saddest part of this video - of course humans fight to survive. It's built into out DNA. Otherwise it's called mental illness

Carry a .45 with at least two extra magazines and see how the bear likes it then. Also carry two knives and a can of bear mace.

Forget the bear spray which is not 100% effective, carry an appropriately sized firearm wherever you go, for both two and four-legged animals.

Get a big dog and feed it indoors. Black bears avoid dogs by instinct. Only a momma bear with cubs will stand her ground. For obvious reasons. I live around black bears. This works.
