Exactly. There should be a law mandating that private owners of collapsed bridges such as this must block them off. This is inexcusable.

They said private road but it was still part of the GPS. At first I thought he wasn't paying attention but the way it looks, it's like a sudden drop in a roller coaster. It's hard to notice the gap until its almost late.

The fact that it was a locally famous road nicknamed "The Road to Nowhere" for almost 10 years and no one cared enough to put up a sign until now is pretty messed up, what a crappy town full of crappy people.

I remember google maps kept telling me to make a u turn on a busy highway for 12 miles straight and wouldn’t redirect me any other way

It's never tried to kill me (yet) but the first time I drove on the FDR it told me to take a $9 U-turn on the Triboro bridge and I fell for it.

it is marked as no pass zone on google maps, apple maps is the problem here. and wym gps companies, its only an apple problem. wonder how many ppl have to die from apple before they actually do something

That's because it's a road that just happens to also be a bridge. I'm 99% sure on Google Maps it just shows up as a regular street. Someone would have to manually reach out to Google and let them know that bridge is gone. It's not done automatically.

@@DavidKen878 well, no. google maps is updated by google trucks driving around with cameras. that was 9 years ago, so a google truck or even satellite images shouldve been updated by that point. theres no reason this shouldve happened.

If you travel a lot, you'll see this type of thing happens often. Some GPS functions have where you can report discrepancies. Really have no clue who is in charge of reporting road changes but I'll just go with the Department of Transportation is a failure in the U.S. as one key factor.

Just ignore the trolls response is what they want out of you report and move on

@@Divinegamer456Alt The news mentioned that it was night time, raining heavily, and there were very few nearby sources of light other than the car headlights. Even putting traffic cone pylons and/or yellow reflective tape to block off the area would've helped. The fact that there were multiple other people who've had close calls on this bridge for a whole decade clearly points to negligence.

The town officials need to pass a new law holding private owners of these roads accountable for maintaining these roads. I don’t care if it’s private or public. An active road is an active road and anyone can be harmed. Stupid negligence.

and this looks pretty backwoods, and it's getting dark early. Where I am in Canada we have "issues" with Google maps and GPS as the satellites run East/West and most of our valleys run north/south, so we get oddball stuff. Not very much, but you can only make a mistake like that once.

@@sdqsdq6274 Could well be. Stopping distance in stormy conditions, and the way the road slopes down a bit...easy mistake to make if you didn't know there was a broken bridge. Nearly happened to me once when a bridge collapsed in Yorkshire, UK, and I was driving late at night in a storm. The storm had only just destroyed the bridge. Thankfully, I had the radio on and the broadcasters alerted everyone because a local person called it in. Probably saved my life. I feel so bad for his wife and children, all his family. This just feels like it was so preventable.

Its not technology. Back in the day you check a paper map (which has no automatic updates, in this case it was marked private so not updated). The paper map would not have shown the bridge washed out either, same as GPS. It was dark out and stormy, he didnt know the area and was probably looking straight ahead and saw nothing bc the old concrete blocks just blended right in. Lack of barracades with reflective tape prevented and warning at all. And the bridge being private probably kept it off the GPS updates.

It was not the technology- it was lack of any signage/barrier or a repair of the said bridge- 10 years is a long enough to build a new bridge
