A video to celebrate Man O' War's 100th Birthday. I own nothing. Poem is called "Big Red" by Joseph Alvie Estes. Sadly the video was not long enough to use the entire poem.
You said the video wasn't long enough for JA Estes entire poem, allow me to fill others in, because it is a masterful work. You skipped the part...after (The look of eagles in his eye And Hasting's wrath in his heart)after 2:01 "Young Equipoise had power To rouse the crowded stand, And there was magic in the name Of Greentree's Twenty Grand. And Sarazen has sprinted And Gallant Fox has stayed And Discovery has glittered In the wake of Cavalcade..." (We watch our heroes parading, We wait, our eyes are dim, But we never discover another Like him.)after 2:08 "A foal is born at midnight And in the frosty morn The horseman eyes him fondly, A secret hope is born But breath it not nor whisper, For fear of neighbors scorn: He's a chestnut colt, and he's got a star--- He may be another Man O' War. Nay, say it aloud---be shameless. Dream and hope and yearn, For there's never a man among you But waits for his return." " Nice job on this video. Thank you !!!
He has an imperious conformation. Man O’War had to stand with his neck virtually vertical. But that WAS like his daddy Fair Play. They looked imperious as if they knew they were king. Also note his front legs seem to come out at the very front of the shoulder, almost as if there is no shoulder. They had highly unusual physical qualities, which I’ve never really seen in horses, including the other greats, who still droop their heads!
Secretariat raced on anabolic steroids. This strongly affected his performances, which is why anabolic steroids were prohibited in human racing. Read, "They used to Call him Sexy",in Sports Illustrated. The article discusses the steroids, which temporarily affected Secretariat's fertility. Man o' War was rightly chosen Horse of the Century..
What separates the good from the great? Carrying 130+ lbs. Secretariat only carried a maximum of 126 lbs. If MOW raced as a 4 yr old, he would have been carrying over 140 lbs.
