Loved the shot of Man O’War with Will Harbut on the lead! On Mr. Harbut’s obituary it states his family consisted of 3 sons, 6 daughters and Man O’War!

Citation would not be born at Calumet Farm for 7 more years, 2 before Man O' War passed away; Assault, for 5; Count Fleet, 2. Whirlaway was foaled the year that this video looked back on the old legend, and at the time War Admiral, Man O' War's greatest son, was still saddling up for races. It is hard to convey just how remarkable this footage is, looking back at a time when there were two larger-than-life American thoroughbred legends, separate from all the others: Man O' War, and Gallant Fox ... and that was it.

Great footage of Man O’ War at about 21 years of age…he looks good too. He would live another 10 years from when this film was made. He passed away shortly after Will Harbut.
Man o War was a magnificent and beautiful horse. How amazing to see him on film like this. He was a big horse although he looked bigger than 16.2 in this rare footage. What a thrilling 3 Man O War, War Admiral and Seasbiscuit were, Man O War father (sire) of War Admiral, Grandfather of Seabiscuit and War and Sea were Uncle and Nephew. That bloodline was special.
Thank you for presenting MGM's Traveltalks featurette series from 1938 with a shot of the legendary Man O'War. Beautiful in appearance, and, arguably, the greatest competitive Thoroughbred of all-time. Others will argue that Seabiscuit and Secretariat deserve the title of "greatest thoroughbred," but here's the legend from the early 20th century as those who were around many years ago remember him. I want to see if there is any newsreel footage on YT featuring Man O' War. I'm sure I'll encounter it.
This is very good footage for the late 1930s, 40s. His color can be seen and that distinctive Star with the thin white jagged snip coming about halfway down the length of his face. That’s how you know it’s him. Very nice vintage film footage.
Awesome to see this again. When I first saw this on tv one night, I couldn't believe my eyes when they showed Man O' War. What a surprise! Wonder who the foals they showed are?
He looks NOTHING like Secretariat because HE was born BEFORE Secretariat was even an idea!! He would have won against Secretariat as his record proves his ability, his stride was longer and he was never allowed to ever fully extend himself in any race, always being kept under wraps.
@@debyzimmerman6617 Well, Man o' War did have a longer stride, but Secretariat was still faster and had more endurance. The fastest woman in the world today is only 5'1" and has a shorter stride, but moves her legs more often (fast twitch muscles). Secretariat's heart being physically 2-3 times larger than any standard thoroughbred horse is a fact that could not be overcome. He ran the Belmont in 90 degree plus temperatures, in a record that still holds almost 50 years later and only sweated where his girth touched him. The horse that was chasing him actually broke down in that effort. Sham had to have a hairline fracture surgically repaired after the race. (Sham and Secretariat are first cousins, there mothers were sisters. Sham also had the larger than normal heart, but not the thick canon bones of Secretariat.) Secretariat was also never pushed. He actually strutted after the marathon win. Plus, he could go faster and faster at each quarter mile, other horses slow down as the continue through a race. The first time he was hit with a whip in a race, his first place was taken away because he veered off into another horse to get away from the whip. They learned to just let him run. He was in charge of his races. Eddie Arcaro, who is the only 2 time Triple Crown jokey on Whirlaway and Citation, was asked who would win a race between Citation and Secretariat. He stated that everyone is going to say their horse, but looking at the 1973 Belmont, no horse can do what Secretariat did. Horse simply cannot do that. Man o' War was something special, but Secretariat was Somethingroyal.
Wow. We've bred all the bone out of our horses. Most horses where I am from are real short backed and small. They'd look like ponies compared to those horses.
Look at those trunks on Man o’ War. He reportedly won a race by 100 lengths and the only race he lost he was facing backward at the start. Even coming from well behind, Upset took him barely by a nose.

He never had any leg issues, except when he threw a shoe (a quarter of a mile into a mile gallop, picture running a mile barefoot and you can see why it hurt), and two others when he was on the worst tracks in the country.
I never realized how beautiful Manowar was until I saw this video with the color. I can say one thing for sure he and secretariat both had good legs, not like the skinny ones they have today.

Secretariat had laminitas so they put him to sleep. He was always a heavy horse but probably gained some weight when he couldn't move around very well.
@@TimesUp777 / Thank you ... Yes I know he died from this disease . Laminitas is often (not always) caused by the overweight or by an equine forme of diabetes . 😕
@@edwardcicco7406 ok thanks. You probably know more about it then I do. Secretariat had a huge neck and MOW did also. Both were the same color and MOW also had the star on his head and blaze coming down his head and nose just like Secretariat. Very similar horses.

Man of war was originally owned by the grandmother of Dr Mike Castle. A native American. He is survived by his daughter. He was a friend of mine that among other things, discovered the welsbach seeding of the geoengineering. More weight was assigned to Man of War, than any other horse in the history of racing. The only race he ever lost, was against the one named upset. Although he never took the triple crown, it can equally said he never lost it either ! Had he been given the best horses to sire offspring, that bloodline would have reset an entire new level of racing performance for the world to try and beat. Instead, greed of the leaders in the industry never accepted what would ruin betting.After all, the goal was for OTHER horses to try to catch up to Man of War. The greatest on earth. He was however, caused to be placed with a poor lot of horses that had never distinguished themselves in any way. None the less, the record of his offspring is known, and many great winners came out of Man of War. His trainer and the horse, died within a week of each other. It was clear the trainer and the horse loved each other. The statement was... Awe says trulay, dis hera..., is da mostest hose ... dat eva was.
His times are still official, regardless of what you think was poor company for him to run against. A lady did some research that showed that his and Secretariat's stride length was the same, that their times over identical distances were only fractions of a second apart, and Secretariat never had to carry 130 pounds! In addition, MOW did not have the manicured tracks of today, starting gates, or digital timers. Think about that.
Man-o-War, Seabiscuit, Secretatiat and Zenyatta are my favorites. I have books about Man-o-War, Seabiscuit and Secretariat. All good reads. If one comes out about Zenyatta I’ll get it too.
Pfft, every chestnut or sorrel horse is nicknamed Red in a barn setting, and if they are tall they usually get called Big Red. No different then callin a gray, a storm or mist, and a black one night or blackie, ect.
@horselover I am more of a Secretariat person (I just don't think MOW beat anybody), but I have never really liked the name Big Red for Secretariat. It seems disrespectful of the first Big Red - and that is and will always be Man o' War.
This is more of a time capsule! I can not fault those who find this a bit color blind. This state is my family's root home. I know it is trying to be better.
I believe the black man was an excellent horseman and he was greatly appreciated for his influences on the TBs. People speak of racism and have no idea how important the black people have been to the growth of this country. Racism is an attitude that festers because of not teaching kindness in the household 🙏🙏🙏

Secretariat was not descended from Man o'War. However, Man o'War's sire Fair Play is found in the fifth generation of Secretariat's pedigree (so Secretariat's great-great-great grandsire).
Actually both are in your horse big red is secretariat's grandfather. Depending on where you are standing in this world your pony's got the ability to fetch a decent stud fee if that bloodline can be proven.

Research shows this: Secretariat was not a descendant of Man O’ War, but they were distant cousins. The sire of Man O’ War, Fair Play, was Secretariat’s great-great-great grandsire. Bold Ruler was Secretariat’s sire; Miss Disco was Bold Ruler’s dam; her sire was Discovery; his sire was Display; his sire was Fair Play.

Grooming the greatest racehorse of all time was beyond an honor, like you are winning the top award in your career path.....Grooms come in all colors on every horse farm in America so your point is ridiculous and incorrect.

Caravaggio...exactly how do you know this? Do you know everything about the people shown in the garden scene? How do you know everything about the way that that they treated other people? And what exactly is wrong with working as a handler of horses? I have had a similar job, taking care of horses and was always proud of it, and of my knowledge and skills. Most people who have a job work for someone else. All jobs are better than making a career of gang activity or shop lifting. Maybe you should start thinking for yourself, as a preference to just sounding like a programmed robot.
Excuse Me, but the man holding the reins was none other than the very famous Will Harbut. That horse adored him so much that after he died, a few weeks later so did the horse of a broken heart after decades together. ALL of America loved them both. They went together.

It was just the vocabulary of the day. This video wasn't racist at all. It's better than what black people refer to themselves as today. They throw the N word around like it's nothing and glorify gun violence and drug use/dealing in their music. Today millions of blacks hold up a serial killer as their hero(king von). Could you imagine if white people looked up to Ted Bundy as a hero and tried to emulate his behavior. That's what is going on in the black community. This innocent video was taken at a time when even black people referred to themselves as colored. Do you think the NAACP is racist? You can't call this video racist without calling the NAACP racist as well. Racism towards blacks was really bad in this country in the past and it still exists and always will on an individual level for some people.. Now the tables have turned and it's white people that are facing more racism than black people. Affirmative action was the beginning of anti white racism for the masses and it's gotten worse with critical race theory being taught in many liberal parts of the country. Racism is an awful thing but don't make this innocent film out to be a part of it.
