In my opinion, Man O' War was the greatest race. This is my dedication to him.
Sorry for the ridiculously low quality video
It's a shame Man O' War was around when film wasn't as big of a deal as it is today. Luckily, we can relive Man O' War's racing career like we never dreamed possible. We can ride, train, bet, and watch Man O' War's races, and even create races. Go to www.freehorsera... download the game, and watch Man o' War go.

These are wonderful videos you have put together. Thanks. On another note, I know we all have our favorites and debating who was best is fun. But some of the "expert analysis" given just points out how little many know about horse racing. PLEASE, stop throwing out Secretariat's times and saying they "prove" he was the greatest or that they prove he was 20 lengths, etc. in front of MOW or Count Fleet or whoever. Anybody who knows racing knows that comparing times from 20, 30, or in the case of MOW, 53 years apart is absurd. Just allowing for improvements in tracks and equipment theoretically makes the old-timers times 3-4 seconds faster (note theoretically, since we can never test that). Man o' War, Count Fleet, Citation, and others totally demolished their opponents, and blew away the times being run on the tracks they were running on. At least in Man o' War's case, he was eased up and even held back in every race he ever ran but two (his loss and the 1920 Dwyer against John P. Grier, who was a good horse carrying only 108), so his times could have been much faster still. Incidentally, it wasn't as much to spare other horse owners feelings as much as to prevent taking more out of MOW for races down the road- that's smart training. Any records Big Red set, he did on his own, without being asked. He also carried 130 or more pounds 10 times, 7 times at age two, still setting stakes, track, American, and World marks. No numerous races that all have to be excused away, either. The bottom line is that we all have personal favorites, there have been many great horses, a hand-full of truly all-time greats, and nobody anywhere can PROVE who was best. They should all be appreciated. And the people who post these wonderful videos do so in order that we can see and appreciate things we might never be able to otherwise. Sorry for the rant, but I've seen too many of these video comments taken over by people who want to put down the horse that is featured.

People can talk about times all they want but the horse that would win is the one that had the greatest will to win and that's Man 'O War. 20 wins and only one loss because he had a lousy start and was boxed in or else he would have easily won that one too. That's shows an extraordinary will to win. Secreteriat has 16 wins out of 21 races. That's great of course but not extraordinary. So if they were to race Man 'O War would do whatever necessary to be over that finish line first. I'm sure of it

Man O'War was a true legendary race horse. In all his career he only lost once and it was the jocky's fault since he didn't turn his steed around fast enough. He was by far the greatest race horse of all time in his days. Now and days, who knows who is the next legendary and "new" man o'war will be. All I want is to have a horse with man o'war or seabiscuit's blood flowing through his/her veins, just to be the next generation.

Secretariat set records in all 3 triple crown races which still stand today.. Several of his defeats can be attributed to being severely bumped, 2 fevers, and a mouth abscess. With all that he still finished in the money. That being said, MOW was a tremendous Horse with an indisputable record. He raced after World War 1 and instilled the spirit of victory and championship into all who love horse racing. Let us not diminish the greatness of either horse by comparing them. If they raced against each other, I think I it would break my heart to see either one lose to the other. They are both eternal champions in their own time, we should just treasure that , but wow, what a thought !

Secretariat was jacked-up on anabolic steroids while setting his records. Steroids were allowed on race day until 2008, when Eight Belles broke both front legs in the Derby. Read, "They used to call him Sexy" in Sports Illustrated, 1974. Man o' War was chosen Horse of the Century by the racing experts for good reason. Secretariat raced on steroids, never carried weight and lost 4 times.
@krism2649
@krism2649 Год назад
@@AbigailMilamProductions Sadly, his heart was enlarged because of the steroids. Many TBs carry the large heart Gene. However, it is not healthy or desirable to have a super sized heart. In every other being on the planet, an oversized heart is the sign of heart disease. Unfortunately, this is a problem in many body builders as well, and often why they live abbreviated lives. Secretariat was raced on steroids. Again, it was incredibly obvious just looking at him at the time. I was astounded that some people couldn't see it When Secretariat was retired, he had temporary fertility issues, again, a common side effect of large amounts of steroids This fact was mentioned in a Sports Illustrated article in 1974. Had it not been true, Sports Illustrated would have been sued. They were not. Steroids were the norm in the seventies. They were legal, and few understood the dangers. Secretariat was raced on steroids. It is tragic and sad.

Man O' War could have won the derby from any post if he had been allowed to race. His owner felt a soft boned 3 year old shouldn't race in early May. If he had only knew. He woke up and let War Admiral run the derby and see what he did. Man O' War was the most dominant Thoroughbred in horseracing history.

My mother would pet him and then she would run as fast as she could to sneak back in line and pet him again! I often wondered if anyone knew she did that? it wasn't Louis. It was Sam. He didn't like "racing in the west" And Kentucky was pretty west, back in the 20's I have to say, it was a smart move to not run him. There weren't airplanes then. It was a train trip from Maryland to Kentucky, for a race that wasn't the big, and then take another train ride all the way back to Maryland. And many say that if Sam knew of the TC he would have run. Not true. He did NOT want to run War Admiral. he did because the Derby grew a bit in prestige.
@carlykaiser
@carlykaiser 17 лет назад
No he wasn't. That was a rumor that was built up overtime. Read any biography about it, it says he was sideways. And yes, I am aware that Sir Barton won it, but it is horribly unfair to knock MOW down because the Triple Crown wasn't considered teh triple crown. It honestly didn't exsist. Heck, the Derby wasn't even that important. Yes, it was but not like a must win race

Man o' War did hold a record until Kelso, I think. Which was about 40 or so years. And i think he still has a record that has never been broken, but tied. Granted, Secretariat hasn't been around for more than 80 years so that can't be a point, just yet

If Man O' War stopped to watch a plane fly in the middle of a race, that's funny. I will research that, but brings up something else the two horses had in common. I heard in a doc about Secretariat that he too stopped in the middle of walking around a crowd to look up at you got it, a plane. When I was a teen, I loved Sec and watched him on tv. Would of loved to of seen him and MOW. Both were so amazing. Very few ever like those two. Both were loved very much by many, I love them both.

I'm just wondering. If he beat a horse by 100 lengths...the other horse was extremely slow because the 100 length win isn't still a track record! Secretariat won by 31 lengths & it is STILL the WORLD record to this day. Sec was faster than MOW in EVERY race (Google it..no one can dispute clocks) Sir Barton was not a fast horse. MOW was superior to the horses in HIS era. Secretariat still holds ALL 3 Triple Crown records. MOW holds 0. They both broke track records. Only Sec's still holds 2day..
@cmf4321
@cmf4321 12 лет назад
Ur not big into research. Google ur comments. Secretariat weighed over 50 pounds more than MOW. MOW does NOT have ANY times faster than Secretariat. Google it. Secretariat holds all 3 TC records..the ONLY horse to SET all 3. MOW beat his competition. His times have all been broken. If all horses raced on the same day & in the same race...the horse that holds the track record is the fastest. Period. Spitz was considered the greatest swimmer until Phelps. Both broke previous records. Now what??
@gracwalk

Imo, Sec., lost to Prove Out, (human error), he should have been thrown into that race at the 11th, hour. It was not his race to run he was not prepared. Sec., was training for another race the (MOW Stakes), his first turf race an different training workouts. For example taking someone from track & field and throwing them into a race cold & unprepared of course they are going to lose.
@xxibitsuxx

So true, Secretariat was something else. He was just such a beefy thoroughbred compared to most horses of the breed, and he did have a heart that was over twice the size of normal. Probably helped maintain that super-speed of his. Ruffian might have been a horse that could've gotten to his level, if she hadn't had that very unfortunate accident so early in her career. Never got to have her big day, like Sec' did at the Belmont.
@cmf4321
@cmf4321 12 лет назад
I agree:-) MOW set the standard & all horses have been compared to him. I just think of Secretariat as the supernatural creature. The true miracle on Earth. He only raced until 3 years old...yet broke all of the TC records & the Marlboro Cup, etc. It's like retiring the greatest athlete in history when he had not even hit his peak physically. No horse can duplicate his times.We will never see it happen again. No human or horse can match this "perfect 10" of nature. God's MIRACLE was Secretariat.
@cmf4321
@cmf4321 12 лет назад
I appreciate what you're saying. I just think that MOW's competition wasn't great. By today's standards, MOW is the only one who would have been "competition" to today's horses. Unfortunately, I can't honestly say that he would not have lost to some of the great horses in history. The only way to compare horses is by their times. Given today, all things being equal, no horse can come close to Sec's records...40 years later. What he did is still the greatest achievement of any athlete in history.
@80cathryn
@80cathryn 12 лет назад
Let's get it correct. No horse has come closer than 2 seconds behind Sec! Sec still holds a world record 39 years and counting. Sec still owns the Derby record and only horse to win under 2 mins. And only horse known to finish a race at that distance running faster each 1/4 than the last. This is unprecedented. No horse ever clocked the field in the 1st turn and then went unchallenged the rest of way. In the end, it isn't margin of win, its the time that indicates margins of victory.
@80cathryn
@80cathryn 12 лет назад
agreed, what was count fleet's time? 2:28 That translates into a 20 length loss to Sec. Let's understand the reality of Sec's greatness: His heart was 21/2 x's bigger than normal. His girth was 7-10 inches broader - his saddle strap was custom made. he weighed 100+ lbs more than almost all of his challengers including MOW. He won on all types of tracks. He's the only horse known to run each 1/4 faster than the last. only horse to win Derby under 2 min's. need i go on? oh yea 31 and 2:24
@80cathryn
@80cathryn 12 лет назад
Due respect to the 2nd greatest horse. Sec however weighed over 100 lbs more, period. who cares about shoes. Also - Sec ran three most prestigious races back 2 back 2 back, winning each with a track or world record, and won them in distinctly different and astounding manner. No horse ever ran faster succeeding 1/4's throughout whole race - unprecedented. Track record still stands. No one clocks the field in the first turn & runs unchallenged rest of way. 31 & 2:24 - no horse has come close
@cmf4321
@cmf4321 12 лет назад
I used to think Man O' War was the greatest race horse. And then came Secretariat who I consider the greatest creature of all time. In all of Man O' War's times, no exception, he was 10-25 lengths behind Secretariat. You can't dispute times. Secretariat weighed 100 pounds more than MOW. So the jockey's weight had nothing to do with the speed. Secretariat always had more weight. Secretariat's records are the only ones that matter today. MOW no longer holds any records that haven't been surpassed.

@denabluechicken Lotta great horses Eddie rode...Nashua ("Nashua didn't beat Swaps..Eddie did!), Kelso, Native Dancer, Whirlaway, probably a whole lot more...but he knew Cy could have been 20 for 20 in 1948 except for a bad ride by himself...beat older horses at one miles on Wednesday, then 1-1/2 miles on Saturday...unchallenged in the Pimlico Special...Cy, who had 8-10 gears he could be eased into at any time in a race...Eddie always thought Cy the best...he was the Master..
@80cathryn
@80cathryn 13 лет назад
@lloydlorraine I know and agree a 25 length margin is special too. But let's get it right on the time: 2:24 has been untouchable - no horse but one has eclipsed 2:26 ( and only barely) and most are still 4-5 seconds off this pace. the old record used to be 2:26 3/5ths so we are talking only one horse in 28 years has bettered that old record. besides this is cheap talk anyway. Name another horse who competed in a race at distance and finished running each quarter faster than the last?
@80cathryn
@80cathryn 13 лет назад
@lloydlorraine Kudo's to Count fleet, but what was his time??? 2:28 which translates into a 20 length loss to Sec. Right? Regardless - Count Fleet's standard stood 5 years before another horse, Citation, equaled the time, and the 25 length margin stood for 30 years before Secretariat eclipsed it. Count fleet's performance has stood test of time as only a handful of horses have done better than 2:28 but none have have broken 2:26 and Sec is still untouchable 38 years after the mark was set.
@80cathryn
@80cathryn 13 лет назад
The reasons why Sec is the greatest: 1) racing pedigree - he accelerated throughout the race - meaning he was pulling away from every known and clocked horse...ever. He beat MOW in mile and a half by 4 seconds - best to best times. 2) no horse in history ran faster each 1/4 mile not once but 3 triple crown times. 3) horse of year twice. 4) racing stride - longer by 22 degrees than MOW. 5) records - still stand 38 years later and no one has come close to 31 length margin of victory at Belmont.

@schardy80 I wrote on the extremely vitriolic Man o' War vs. Secretariat page that the difference between the best horses is fractions -- and that any could have beaten each other on any given day. No one replied... People want to believe in a fantasy of unbeatable immortals rather than flesh and blood athletes who have good days and bad and sometimes have to win with heart and class. Any given day Fager beats Sec, Sec beats Fager, MOW beats CY, CY beats Kelso, Kelso beats MOW, etc etc

@rscarbro100 Cy beat Coaltown by 3.5 lengths eased up because Coaltown was a better horse than Shecky Greene...or don't you understand that? They ran on a very sloppy track, not a fast track like in 1973...finally the Derby is not conducive to great speed; too many horses...there are many more faster 1.25 milers...Cy was covered by a traveling press corps which witnessed and wrote about those bursts of speed...discouraged the other horses in the race....

@rscarbro100 Immortal means you never die...Sec's dead...he ran the fastest TC by 2 seconds and change...big wow...The TV age lets us see all of Sec's glorious wins and immortal defeats...Unfortunately, we only have Cy's TC wins, and not even full videos. There are 16 more wins in 1948 that are unable to be savored;-( (Sec had the same number of wins...in his life). If we only had those videos...THEN, you'd see a REAL thoroughbred!!!

@rscarbro100 Who the hell did Sec beat? Mediocre 3 yo colts. Even Sham had a middling record. He beat some good older horses, true, but was only 3/5 beating older horses...Eddie said different things at different times...once he said that Kelso could kick Cy's butt. I'm impressed not with Eddie's absolute estimation of him, but his description of his riding him...speed at any point in a race...like gunning a Cadillac...the sonofagun just took off with me!!

@rscarbro100 Both are legendary...However, neither did the things Cy did at 3...or even come close...that's why Eddie calls him the best 3 yo ever...FACT...19 for 20...MOW only ran 11 times and Sec 12...won 4 races in Feb., two against older horses, while Sec slept in his stable...won the Derby on 3 days rest...etc...Doing whatever was asked of him, on every kind of track, across the nation, no horse passed him, and he caught every one ahead of him...7/7 against older horses...c'mon...

@rscarbro100 That proves he has more hits, that's all....more people listen to pop music than listen to jazz or classical, much more...does that mean that Lady Gaga, Eminem, et al produce better music? Popularity means little...I saw one list that had Sec first, Barbaro second, etc...I have a feeling most of Sec's fans are of this caliber of thinking...They have no knowledge of what happened before they were born...Pity

@rscarbro100 Again, he was never pushed. Arcaro said Cy had ten gears, could move any time in a race. It is impossible to say how much a horse COULD have run...against better competition, Count Fleet would just have to run a little faster to win...MOW broke records running against mostly poor competition...different kinds of horses...you seem to assume that all horses are the same...shows how little you know...

@rscarbro100 Eddie said Sec was "fast"...he knew the difference between fast and best, which apparently you don't. Riva Ridge ran faster; lots of horses ran 10 furlongs faster; When did Sec run a 2:23.8 Belmont? Did you lower it by yourself. Nonsense. Like those fantasy races people dream up. Any horse can lose on any given day. You seem to forget that Sec lost 3 times at 3 in 1973. 75%. Arcaro said he never let Cy run full out...all indications are that we don't know how fast he could run...

@rscarbro100 You just don't get it, do you?...You have just disputed the reasoning behind handicap racing...the best horses carry more weight to make the races more even...Why Cy lost his last race in 1950 by 3 lengths, with Noor giving him a pound, has baffled horseracing experts...don't make sense, cept that perhaps Cy's ankle was really beginning to bother him...but he always tried...never spit out the bit...BTW, Eddie said Cy would beat Sec in a match race by about a neck...

@rscarbro100 He had a great year in 1950. 16th strate win, broke a record. But so did Noor. Breaking records all over the place. In most races Cy bore much more weight. At even weights, Cy would have demolished Noor. If he had his 3 yo form, he would have demolished Noor. J. Jones: "I don't mind losing to a horse carrying 120-122 lbs., but losing to a horse [like Noor] carrying 110, is pretty much a gift..." Tells the whole story. W/o Tanforan in 1948, who knows???

@rscarbro100 Cy ran down Coaltown, who was posting super fractions...Eddie thought he picked the "wrong horse" again...He still did not know Cy that well...After Cy breezed past CT, Eddie just galloped him in as always...the object is to win the race, dummy, not post the best time...the fact that Super Saver ran the KD 1 second faster is supposed to mean what? Nada, zilch...a few days earlier Cy won the 8f Derby trial, then the Derby, 1st horse to do that...

@1948BigCy My heart will alway belong to Secretariat - just perfection and brilliance in every way to me. However, all of them - Man O' War, etc., had real class. Any other year, Sham would have been the Triple Crown Winner, and I'm just sorry that he isn't mentioned more in the history books of great race horses. I was very surprised and disappointed that he wasn't chosen as one of the top 100 horses of the century. I loved him, also.

@dunsta69 Experts have already done it. Of course, a precise comparison may be difficult, but not entirely. Experts concluded, that Secretariat was selected second to ManO'War. This was only partly due to Secretariat never carrying more than 126 pounds. MOW , as a baby, broke records carrying weights at distances that were unheard of. Mature horses of today don't even carry those weights.

Man O' War is not one of the greatest racehorses. Man O' War is The Great. MOW was the only great to grace the planet with his heart, courage, blinding speed, pure raw strength and consistency. Most racehorses, including Secretariat have speed, heart and courage, but to become the greatest of all, a horse must have more. MOW had more. He truly was the only authentic 'freak of nature.'

cindylou.....you shouldn't make comments based on ignorance, the facts are that tracks now are faster, by several seconds. do your research, this is common knowledge, and man o'war carried record weight, that is why he was retired. and it is true that horses started being pulled from races, when he ran. this is well known knowledge. secretariat was a great horse, but man o' war was held in, in most of his races, and still set records.

@rscarbro100 Honestly, I have no clue where you got that from other than your posterior, but THIS is what Wikipedia says: "The Kenilworth Park Gold Cup was in actuality a "match race" between Sir Barton and Man o' War. Another champion horse, Exterminator, was invited to compete in the race, since Canada did not allow match races." And now, if you think you have some other clever comeback to post, don't even bother. You've lost, whether you know it or not. This discussion is over.

@rscarbro100 Everything so far that you claimed to know you've been wrong about. Exterminator was invited to the match race between Man O' War and Sir Barton. His owner chickened out and refused to race him. Samuel Riddle would gladly have raced against him. Also, there were plenty other good horses that Man O' War beat. Horses that would have been champions any other year. Here's a few of them to get you started: Blazes, Wildair, Upset, John P. Grier, Donnacona, On Watch, and Golden Broom.
