Knowing Pekora the features she asked for were probably pretty ambitious. She isn't really the type of person to half-ass things so in a way it makes sense for the estimate for a game with all the features she wants could get quite expensive.

2 million is insanely cheap for a video game so I would assume this was actually a very simple project. I know it sounds like a lot but think of this Like 60k per developer (low end of the scale there). 20 developers times 2 years is 2.4 million. So this project would be made by like 15 developers I guess. Probably some kind of mobile game, I don't even think they could make a JRPG for that much.

@@bobpotato1231 A short jrpg in rpg maker would be easy, even with 25k... but like, the last of us cost 250mil, also an rpg. Palworld, a buggy mess of a game made on a shoestring budget by crazy people still cost $7mil. You should probably just budget 100k per dev, and keep in mind that other costs (management, org, planning, ads/pr will eat about half of the budget, maybe only 1/4 for pekora since she's the ad)... 1m is probably a 2-4 dev team. I guess holocure would be the comparison? That might cost $750k or so if a paid studio made it.

Solodev here, even if it's a pixel game, if she wants every single asset to be made from scratch, then sure.. a really good pixel art game can cost that or even more. It can obviously cost a lot less too, in this case management wanted her to think it a bit more probably.

@@kos2919 There would have been a lot of odd costs for that game due to the wild style and ancient system choice. They wouldn't have had the tooling or education that original genesis devs would have had, so they likely had to roll a lot of tools themselves. And they probably heavily leveraged the open source community which would have lowered costs a ... chaotic amount. I don't think it is a good game to make comparisons from.

a 2 million dollar is a game where everything is created from scratch from the assets, to the game engine. like all the asset flip horror hololive games combined probably dont cost as much as the game pekora would want with all new assets and other features

Also, 2 million is on the low end, depending on the timeframe we're looking at. Darkest Dungeon (1) is a relatively simple game (in concept. The final release ended up being an instant cult classic with incredible polish), and yet it gobbled up 300k USD from their kickstarter + 9 months of unpaid work by the main team + an unknown amount of money after first release.

She probably can try to reduce the cost by outsourcing it to Indonesian game devs. But the amount of quality game devs in Indonesia. It's easier to find high quality artists and musicians than game devs in Indonesia.

When you're talking millions it's not so simple. Selling at 10 dollars per sale making 2 million would take 200k sales. That's not a small amount and you cant guarantee that much just from "being pekora"

Pixel art animation requires skill and a great deal of time. Most of the cost of game development is labor, but for some works, pixel art can be more expensive than 3D. Especially in Japan, the number of pixel art craftsmen is decreasing, and it is not easy to recruit the right people. Of course, some people paint pixels as a hobby, but it can be difficult when it comes to work.

That number sounds about right for a small full-featured game in today's market. The only way to lower that cost is to do the work yourself. Obviously people make games and give them away for free BUT if they were being paid for all the time, energy, and resources they put into it then you'd find this number to be pretty reasonable. Also, if Pekora DID make a game then you KNOW that Hololive is going to sell it as opposed to giving it away for free so it becomes imperative to properly pay those who work on it. This is why Holo Indie is a thing now as Cover has found a way to get these devs who are fans of their IP to basically make games for them which they will both make money from while also pushing their characters out to an even larger audience. This has also allowed these devs direct access to the talents for direct VO work thus improving the overall quality of the games.

They aren’t cheap at all. The price tag is low because most of them need updating, and even when you do update them they cost a fortune to heat power and maintain. The only way to afford the upkeep is to use it for a business. My cousin owns one and my friend’s family inherited one both could never be used as actual residences because they’d be literal money pits without the income they generate

i tried making pekora third person shooter shooting a police, but those bugs are not easy to fix. i still have the project, it has so many hololive characters, maybe i just focus on pekora and shorten the map to minimize the glitch.

Elden Ring is estimated to have cost around 100 million USD. Keep in mind that From Soft has been making games on the Dark Souls engine/style for a while, meaning their costs are significantly LOWER than you'd expect.

@@Gabu_The engine is old, but not that old. Also because it’s an in house engine they aren’t paying a licensing fee. Elden Ring’s world building was all done by Martin who was given total freedom. So the game’s storyline and everything in it was created based on the feedback they got from him, meaning they were severely limited when it came to reusable resources. The game was also in development for 10 years so those are the things that increased the cost By comparison Unreal charges a licensing fee, but they also have the largest library of free and licensable 3D assets as well as bunch of pre generated stuff that’s built in like basic walk cycles and character models. Using their stuff can save you a lot of time and money instead of doing everything from scratch

Pixel games can also exceed high budgets. Sea of Stars had a crowd funded budget of 1.17 million USD, and they received further funding after that. If Kay Yu wasn't such a talented guy making games out of passion with other passionate contributors, HoloCure would definitely in the budget of a few hundred thousand to make, there's so many characters, enemies and animations to make in that game. You're conflating all pixel games together, not every pixel game is an RPGMaker game.

You can calculate the approximate cost based on the dev time for that game multiplied by the wage an employer would pay for that many work hours. It is hard to say exactly how much time went into it, but say the employer pays 150$'s for each work hour (Which is way more than the average game dev would cost to employ, like 5-10 times more), to have Holocure cost even 100.000$'s, it would require 666 work hours (Funny number) at that exorbitant price. I don't know if Holocure would take more or less work hours, but it is fairly reasonable to say that it can be made in less work hours by a few experienced developers and artists working on it consistently, and realistically it would cost more like 50$'s per work hour for the employer, so it really shouldn't be that expensive to make this. The character designs and animations can also be outsourced to some artists, and even a competent artist can do that level of work for no more than a few thousand dollars, heck, artists wouldn't dare ask that much even for a few sprites and sprite animations for 40 ish characters. So, the art development can be completed for no more than 10k, then the programming is not particularly difficult to do for any decent programmer, so Holocure should really not cost more than 20-30k to make realistically. Even if we want to pay very generously (Which I am already doing with this calculation), getting to 100k is quite hard for Holocure.

Pekora could definitely fund the game herself. That 2 million is stretched across 2 years of development. She can definitely pay with her own income. She has to forgo some luxuries, but she makes enough to comfortably fund the entire development herself through a monthly spending schedule.

Game development is expensive, however a pixel art game shouldn't cost this much, otherwise no indie games on steam would ever be made :) Though if the game you want to make is very big, makes everything from scratch and you employ a semi large team for this, yeah, it is very expensive (Employing people the employer roughly pays double the wage the employees receive, due to how tax is calculated, so it is expensive to employ a team of people). 1.9 mil USD still sounds like a lot though, more than it should cost.

Majority of games on Steam released by indie developers don't break even. They are made by developers that use their own savings to make a game. 2 millions is enough to hire a team of like 15 reasonably experienced developers to make a game for 12 months.

@@kaminekoch.7465 Many of these developers do everything themselves, and they get by either from other sources of income or savings, and the game when it sells a decent amount of copies, actually does make them money because they don't pay a lot of development costs, just time investment, since they usually do it all themselves. Almost none will be the next Vampire Survivors, but those who do fine get money out of it while being able to do what they like, enough to work on it full time and live from the money, it is not that bad.

Undertale RAISED 50k, the development took 32 months which is like 160k in development costs at a conservative 5k a month for a single person.

@@kaminekoch.7465 You have to be realistic here and realize that those weren't 32 months of full time work. More like, the singular dev spend time doing work semi consistently some days certainly he'd be doing more work, other days he'd be doing almost nothing. I'm fairly certain the total development time would be more in line with a years worth of full time work, and game devs are lucky if they get paid enough to cost their employer 5k a month for full time work (Literally, which game studio pays a 3k+ wage to their employees?), so that 50k would basically get there just fine for a game like Undertale.

Most programmers and game designers aren't the Undertale guy. That's like saying (insert olympic athlete here) can run a marathon in world record time. Sure, they can, but that doesn't mean everyone running a marathon will.

Realistically speaking... Undertales graphics are extremely Simplistic... and so are the Animations. If you are taking about a higher quality of pixel art... with actual depth of shading and details... the artwork alone would cost a Large sum of time and Money. I once worked for free, helping to direct a few artists, for a programmers developing game remake (Isometric 2d engine game). A single character, and every animation sequence for them... was quite an involved process. First, I had to design the Enemy, how it generally looked, the color palette, how it moved and attacked... and then I had to convey that to 2d and 3d artists, for them to create. Often something would not be correct... such as it not looking right, not moving properly... etc. As such, several revisions had to be made... each taking a certain amount of time, and efforts. I am a Casual artist / Concept artist... so I cleaned up the images, making them look a bit better... but I wasnt anywhere near good enough, to do the complete process, on my own. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the programmer... in his inability to make the main character control properly (acceleration issues, likely due to not locking things to the games framerate). That, and various artists would complete a single animation project... then quit. Eventually the while project imploded. The one good thing that came from it... was that due to all of the constant emails and IM's... I went from being a fairly slow two finger typist.. into a no-look dual hand typist... with pretty darn good typing speeds! I also gained quite a bit more experience, with graphics programs. That said, I never could really get decent with 3d Programs. Way too confusing for my brain.
